History: The Istari had been sent to Middle-earth in the times between the struggles against the Dark Lord Sauron. Intended to advise the world of Men and Elves against the foul influence of Sauron, the most powerful of their order, Saruman the White, would allow himself to be corrupted by the Dark Lord in the vain pursuit of power.
From the Tower of Orthanc in Isengard, Saruman combined the magic of the Istari, the foul sorcery of Sauron and destructive processes of industry of Saruman's own design to quickly raise an army, a threat to the Free Peoples unmatched in the West. Communicating with Sauron through the Palantir, Saruman orchestrated a grand battle-plan against the proud people of Rohan.
Uruk-hai, a strong, intelligent orcish breed, were spawned in vast numbers at Isengard and equipped with the finest anti-cavalry weaponry to combat the Rohirrim. The twisted spawn of men and orcs infiltrated the society of men and served as keen spies for Saruman. The Dunlendings, Hill-men of Dunland, swore a blood oath to Saruman to pillage Rohan, their long-hated enemy. Finally, Saruman's most useful servant, Gríma Wormtongue, helped Saruman control King Théoden of Rohan, tying the royal court's hands behind its back.
The invasion of the armies of the White Hand was swift and brutal. The Fortress of Helm's Deep was a hard nut to crack, but eventually the Uruk-Hai and their allies were able to slaughter all who had fled to its ancient halls. The Battle of the Hornburg would be one of the bloodiest of the War of the Ring.
There would be no dawn for the men of Rohan. The White Hand held a stranglehold on Rohan, but the Eye of Sauron was soon drawn South to Gondor. Ever an ally of Sauron, Saruman was compelled to follow its gaze and contributed many troops to the siege of Minas Tirith.
Though Saruman had done his dark master a great service, the coming years would not see the power and influence he foresaw. For the lieutenants of the Dark Lord hold no such devotion to each other as they do to Sauron. The fighting Uruk-hai were called North, to relieve the stronghold of Dol Guldûr, and in their stead the Mouth of Sauron marched 10,000 orcs into Orthanc and relayed the Great Eye's order for Saruman to journey into Harad, in order that the Dark Lord might 'guarantee the loyalty of the Southrons'. This was a clear political move, for the Mouth had long wished to move his war court West following the end of his campaigns against Gondor. No warning had been sent via the Palantir. Saruman of Many Colours, conqueror of Rohan, had been vanquished not by the armies of the men of the West but by his own supposed allies.
Saruman had been a unique leader amongst the forces of evil; wise and cunning, the Wizard possessed ambition of his own beyond the desire to help Sauron, which could not be said for the Mouth and the Nine. Saruman had followed his own agenda ever since his fall to darkness, a policy reflected nowhere more than in the raising and leadership of troops. So far from Mordor, the White Wizard was forced to spawn his own army, the Uruk-hai of Isengard, whom he saw as the orc seen perfected. In these fighting Uruk-hai, Saruman instilled a loyalty only to himself, a fierce patriarchal connection that persisted even after Saruman's banishment. The first and most perfect of the Uruk-hai, Lurtz, was the first to think freely on his former master. The Mouth of Sauron had seen fit to captain Isengard's legions with lesser Snaga, and worse still, the 'Black Uruks' of Mordor, with whom the Isengard Uruks shared a heated factional rivalry. An affront to Lutrz's pride, Saruman's former second-in-command decided on action. Rallying the Uruks of the White Hand, as well as a number of Dunlendings who had swore a blood-oath to Saruman in return for vengeance on the Rohirrim and a number of 'loyal' servant Snaga, Lurtz has led those loyal to Saruman in a subtle rebellion against the Great Eye. As the forces of evil streamed through Isengard on to the endless campaigns in the North, the so-called 'Legion of the White Hand' travelled South, supposedly on the orders of the Nine to occupy Gondorian strongholds. But the Legion did not stop at Gondor. Now at the border with Harondor, the fighting Uruk-hai and their allies plan to find their Lord and see him restored to power. Amongst their number is one Gríma Wormtongue, Saruman's chief spy now being taken South largely against his will.

History: The first of the Isengard Uruk-hai, Lurtz was Saruman's pet project, the most perfect of the creatures spawned in his twisted experiments. Lurtz's natural cunning and strength greater than even that of his brother Uruks, and undying loyalty to Saruman, earned him his place as second in command of all Isengard's military operations and field commander of the Fighting Uruk-Hai. He would serve this role effectively in the Siege of Helm's Deep, gutting many Men, soldier and civilian alike. Upon his master's fall from power, Lurtz began instantly to mistrust the forces of the East, a suspicion confirmed when deprived of his privileges in favour of Mordor's clearly inferior Black Uruks. Now he leads the renegade Legion of the White Hand South in search of his master.

History: The most powerful of the Istari, Saruman has gone by many names. Initially the White Wizard, few could be said to be as wise or convincing an advisor as Saruman, and he served the cause against Sauron well for many centuries. But the allure of power consumed the wise Wizard, as he sought to abuse the One Ring, going as far as blocking attempts to halt Sauron's re-emergence that the Ring might reveal itself. Eventually Sauron's influence corrupted Saruman entirely, and he turned his back on the Free Peoples. Declaring himself Saruman of Many Colours, the cunning Istari built a concentrated war machine unseen by the peoples of Middle Earth. Though corrupted, Saruman remained wise and built a personal army loyal only to him and defeated the noble Men of Rohan. But Saruman would not have his glory as political machinations have pushed him to the sidelines, exiled deep to the South by Mordor's elite close to Sauron's ear. Declaring himself Saruman the Black, the once-noble Wizard works in desperation to find relevance in the most isolated corner of Sauron's domain, counting the days until the Dark Lord of Mordor is convinced to execute his once most powerful ally.

Character name: Gríma Wormtongue

Appearance:
History: Little is known of the young Gríma, although those close to the man claim he comes from mixed Rohirrim-Dunlending blood. Entering into the service of Saruman, Gríma exploited his position as a rich merchant in Rohan to earn the King's ear and, with the help of Saruman's sorcery, slowly gained more control of King Théoden. Manipulating the King to look away from Isengard, even as the Uruk-hai and Dunlendings slaightered his people, Wormtongue could not have served his purpose more successfully, nor bore his title so aptly. The downfall of Saruman was a secret wish of Gríma's, despising and fearing his master in equal measure. But his peace would be short-lived as the Mouth of Sauron would require his service as an advisor to his lieutenants in Isengard before being kidnapped and dragged South to serve his most hated former master.
