History: (put in spoiler):Ismail, head of the Safaviyya Shia order, took advantage of the crumbling Ak Koyunlu and successive Georgian invasions to wage a campaign against the Ak Koyunlu Turks. Ismail was based at Kerman in Persia's east as a large chunk of Western Persia was already under Georgian control. By 1501, Ismail had defeated the remnants of the Ak Koyunlu Turkomans and united the various warlords of eastern Persia under his banner, proclaiming himself Shah and establishing the Safavid Dynasty. Much of his his reign was spent expanding eastward, with much of Afghanistan and Turkmenistan falling to his armies. His successor, Tahmasp I, continued this policy of expansion, defeating disparate Turkoman tribes and eventually annexing Khiva in 1552. Tahmasp
Upon the death of Ismail II in 1586 without a clear heir, Persia collapsed into a brief period of civil war. Abbas, the nephew of Ismail II, emerged as Shah in 1590. Much of his reign was spent on consolidation, putting down rebellions that had arisen during the civil war and beginning a reformation of the army based off European models. The remainder of Central Asia was brought under Persian suzerainty by 1610. In order to suppress constantly simmering rebellion in the north, and reconcile the Persians and conquered Turkic peoples as much as was possible, Shah Mahmud canceled the Jizya poll tax and Shia conversion programs that had been the cause of considerable resentment from Sunni Turkic peoples. Mahmud and his successor Abbas considerably secularized the nation, and though the Shahs still picked Grand Vizier from among the royal advisers, Abbas granted men holding that office considerably more power than had been afforded to them before.
Late in his reign (1637), Abbas commissioned an exploratory fleet to establish a colony in Africa (Mozambique). The funds required for this severely hampered his grandfather's military modernization project, but once the colony, Daryaband, became self-sufficient by 1655, funds were diverted back into the army, which was slowly but surely taking the shape of a modern European army, with vestiges of past tactics left over. Tahmasp II was crowned Shah in 1692, and continues to lead a now stable and prosperous Persia.
