Hey, Gren, what climatic zone would ~40-50 S cover?
EDIT: Specifically in the east of the continent.

Pretty much the same as you'd find in the Rockies of the northern US/southern Canada. So, like, Alberta, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, etc.

OK, thanks (this is a climate I can actually picture well). Mountainous, or are you just using the Rockies for their general climate?

My general thoughts on terrain are as follows:

-Green: grasslands, lowlands, swamps (where appropriate, i.e., you're not going to find a swamp in the middle of the continent far away from a significant water source), etc. Kind of like most of the Gulf Coast states.
-Tan/Brown: Hill country, though also grasslands and plains.
-Grey: Mountains
-White: Glaciers/icepacks/tundra/etc.

Of course, there's certainly room for play with the green areas and the brown/tan areas, the above descriptions merely describing the predominant trend(s). Not so much with the grey or white areas, though.

I eagerly encourage the culture guys to not go much over board on the happy-go-lucky acceptance of LGBT people stuff. Don't get me wrong, I'm perfectly fine with that stuff in the real world, but here it's a bit jarring to see such a level of civil rights next to forced soldiering, feudal institutions and tons of racism.

I feel like they'd still be alienated somewhat, especially by the more conservative elements of society, who likely put great emphasis on heterosexual relationships and producing children in order to keep their names alive. Perhaps they'd feel as though LGBT people are a threat to this, despite the fact that LGBT folks are accepted by most in society.

In terms of the rank-and-file's collective views on LGBT, I feel as though they'd be divided. Some see it like Mulder; sexual orientation and gender roles come second to service, while others feel as though that LGBT soldiers are detrimental to a unit's performance.

Oh, there will certainly be some marginalisation (the degree of this marginalisation depending somewhat on the region). I intend for the situation to be (in a nutshell) official acceptance of them and their acceptance (indeed, promotion in a way) by Gammar Gammura, but socially there will be much less acceptance, except in very religious communities (due mostly to the fact that, since LGBT people are believed to be more spiritually-attuned, no one dares offend them in such a way as to invoke divine wrath and whatnot).

I don't really see the gruntariat giving half a fuck about whether someone is queer in one way or another or not. Yeah, sure, individual people might have opinions, but if someone covers your ass in a firefight, you tend to have a positive opinion of them, be they gay, trans or whatever. It's essential for unit cohesion, really.

Idea for Precambrian Equipment

Pv-fT 32 Medium Tank

The Pv-fT 36 Duckling is the fourth generation of Precambrian main battle tanks, and is the newest recorded variant of the series. It is considered by Antediluvian vanguard units as a vast improvement over the older Pv-fT 28 tank. It has a four man crew; Commander, Gunner, Loader and Driver. There are a number of electronic aids to crew, along with several electronic computing devices and small hydraulic equipment of an unknown purpose. No vehicles have been captured in well enough condition to recover any intact equipment or maintenance manuals.

Judging by what forward engineering salvage teams and anti-tank squads have been reporting, the armor effectiveness has been improved by nearly 60%, but is significantly lighter and thinner, along with an increased reports of the 'super-armor' anomaly. The armor layout is also different, with the armor angle further decrease by a noticeable amount. Engineering teams theorize that the Precambrians are using a new alloy and an odd ceramic material, forming a sort of composite material. No vehicles have been captured in well enough condition to recover a enough material to confirm or deny these theories.

A new fuel-injected V14 547 kW engine and an efficient 12 speed gearbox gives the Duckling excellent power to weight ratio, equivalent to the latest Antediluvian light tank prototypes. Chemical analysis shows that the fuel used contains several additives, which most likely add to the excellent performance. The Duckling has been reported of doing speeds of 55 km/h over bumpy terrain, suggestion a new suspension as well.

The Duckling is armed with a high velocity, rifled 107mm cannon, which is loaded with unorthodox dense, arrow-shaped AP shells and the infamous Dasiysower fragmentation shell. An electronic computing circuit is connect to the gunner's station, along with several other pieces of unidentified electronic equipment, which is presumably there to assist the gunner. There is also the usual coaxial machine gun, which has been upgunned to a 13mm Revaalsbandti caliber in this version. This new cannon is predicted to be able to destroy any currently deployed Antediluvian tank over the front glacis from over 2km away, the sole exception being the HT-16 Heavy Tank.

Luckily, the Duckling is most likely a prototype with large scale deployment not expected. It has been only seen in the hands of the elite Precambrian 2nd Expeditionary Armored Battalion, but a wider roll-out is extremely likely, should it perform well. However, crew interrogations reveal that the version currently seen is currently undergoing field trail, and complete update of the Precambrain armor inventory will be complete within [REMOVED] years, which could lead to an extremely disadvantageous position for our tankers.

I personally think it adds new depths to the world we're building. In our world, overcoming racism historically came before overcoming queerphobia, whereas on Soil, it happened in reverse.

I think that the way I'm developing it should be a pretty good balance between the two. That is, while IRL racism isn't sanctioned either officially or socially, but there are still many stereotypes and prejudiced people, in Soil queers are supported by the government, by religion and by the majority of people, but there are still some stereotypes about and prejudice against them.

In addition to the standard variety, R n' R comes in a number of varieties, including but not limited to: studded, spermicidal, "skintight," and flavored. These condoms are inexpensive, and it is common for soldiers to buy the large boxes, instead of the standard individual wrapped condoms.

R n' R is recognized just as much for its utility purposes as much as its sexual purposes. The condom is reported to be able to hold a little bit over a gallon of water, and soldiers have remarked that they make great water-carrying devices in the absence of canteens or during long-range ruck marches into the wilderness. There are unconfirmed reports that some soldiers have even used the condoms as tourniquets in the absence of proper devices, though Medical Command (or whatever group oversees the military's medical services) advises soldiers that such a practice is dangerous.

The most useful and inexpensive piece of rope you'll ever find, paracord is made up of braided and interwoven nylon strings that allow the cord to stay together even under extreme stress. The original purpose for paracord was in the suspension lines for parachutes, though it has found its way into a multitude of niches. It is common practice for soldiers to secure their equipment to their vests with paracord, so that they won't lose something that they drop, as well as to secure ponchos to trees when making a hooch. Some vehicle crews even remark paracord is great for holding vehicles together, in the absence of proper equipment. Another use for paracord involves prisoners of war, as the cord is great for securing not only the hands and feet of a POW, but it can be used to secure prisoners to one another in order to impede escape attempts. It is commonly bought in varying lengths, with 50 feet being the most common length bought.

Like the R n' R, the paracord is rumored to be a good - but ill-advised - substitute for a tourniquet.

These aren't the bungee cords that you use for bungee jumping, so we implore you to stop using these for bungee jumping. These bungee cords are for utility purposes, and are equipped with metal hooks so that they can be secured to objects. Bungee cords are great for securing equipment to vehicles, cordoning areas, securing people to trees, suspending ponchos from trees, and impeding movement.

Sometimes, a bayonet and shovel simply won't cut it for delicate work. That's why the multitool is a common piece of equipment, though not standard-issue to most troops. Equipped with two knife blades, a set of needle-nosed pliers, a flathead screwdriver, a Phillip's Head screwdriver, a star screwdriver, a bottle-opener, a small saw blade/rule, and a magnifying glass, the small tool had the ability to fold its instruments into its plastic grip, for ease of handling.

More to come, soon.

Ayr, could you get these items added to the PX list, por favor senhor?

Well now that you're asking nicely.

@Ayr: Just in case you missed these:

An extremely industrialised county, Fierar is well-known for its manufacturing industry, and produces vehicles, weapons, tools and machinery to be exported all across the country. Smog fills the air above its sole, sprawling city of Vatamia, which is mostly made up of giant factories and large brick buildings that house both dwellings and services for the common people of the city. Despite being quite economically successful, most of the residents of Fierar are extremely poor, and almost all food has to be imported due to the heavy emphasis on manufacture. Single-family dwellings are almost unheard-of, and the streets and buildings are always blackened, earning the city its (often derogatory) nickname of "Blackbrick".

Crime is rampant in the city, which has a high population density compared to many other cities in Antediluvia, and the locals are accustomed to people going missing to the extent that most of them barely bat an eyelash if one of their coworkers stops showing up for work. In fact, it's an unspoken rule that if someone goes missing for more than three days, their neighbours are free to enter their dwelling and take whatever they want (assuming there's no family member to claim it).

The ruling family, House Lupei, is Ezeric in origin, as are many of the county's residents; however, due to the county's location, Thornorgisil language and culture have had a significant impact on the people, and both Ezeric and Thorn names are common. The population is, in general, more religious than the majority of the country, and LGBTQ people are often championed as being especially gifted.

The coat of arms is three smokestacks -- the central one taller than the other two -- in the background, with a hammer and pair of tongs crossed in the shape of an X in the foreground. All are black silhouettes on a grey background. Troops from Fierar often have the hammer and tongs sewn onto one of their articles of clothing, wear an iron ring, or wear a necklace with a small piece of iron hanging from it.

The county is to the south of Slatina (but not coterminous with it), in the foothills of the central mountain range.

*I've decided against this for linguistic reasons (specifically, that "th" is a distinct phoneme in Proto-Germanic, whereas "sh" and "ch" are not). I would still like to distinguish "t" and "th", however.

Also, are the seasons still GoT style like you said a while back, or are they normal? And the year is still 365 days like IRL, yes?

And related to the above: Would it be okay for me to make a distinct calendar? Like, rename the months and the days of the week?

And continuing from that: Is there an IC calendar year? If so, what event is it counting from?

Meanwhile, the eastern language family and queer people are on the way.

I'll add the shit out of that county in my next update.

As for alphabet, you have ultimate control.

The seasons are normal, given that Soil is the size of Earth, and the year is 365 days. By GoT-style winters, I was describing the harshness and impact of it. Really cold, craploads of snow, and everyone just huddles inside.

Right.

In that case, here's the updated phonetic alphabet:
Prescribed Radiotelephony Phonetic Alphabet (also known as the RAA Phonetic Alphabet)

A - Altaflor
B - Boy
C - Crávis
D - Duke
E - Eleanor
F - Flower
G - Godfrey
H - Honora
I - Idony
J - Joscelin
K - King
L - Linvale
M - Magnus
N - Norton
O - Oorburg
P - Prudence
Q - Queen
R - Rialto
S - Sayshel
T - Talbot
Th - Thorn
U - Ursela
V - Verstact
W - Winstor
X - Axe
Y - Yvon
Z - Zoe
The only thing that's changed is the way "T" is said (Talbot) and the addition of "Th" (which is now Thorn).

If you'd like, I could come up with some linguistically-probable names later (given the language the Precambrians speak).
Alternatively, if someone else (e.g. Gren) came up with some names, I or Trans could give them Precambrian names later and say that the names we're using are the ones given to them by the Antediluvians.
