Ayreonia wrote:Came up with some slang. Again, some of it is my own, while some I blatantly borrowed.

Mortar Monkey -- Mortarman/woman. More of an affectionate nickname than an insult.
Head Gorilla of the Mortar Monkeys -- Mortar team leader.
Crawler Brawler -- 14T APC crewmember, especially one who tends to bring their vehicle a bit too close to combat.
Biodegradable -- Someone who breaks down in nature. Hates being out in the field.
Always Tired -- AT gunner. A play on the acronym "AT" and on the perceived weight of the weapon.
Let's fuck! -- Acknowledgment. "Altaflor squad, take that hill!" "Aye, aye, sir! Let's fuck!"
OMF -- Ow My Fingers. OMFing refers to feeding a new belt of 30mm into an IFV cannon's chamber. "Warren, OMF the gun."
Fossil -- Precambrian.
Can Opener -- Bayonet.
PFB -- Piss For Brains. Insult.
Private Elect -- Someone who has either been demoted to Private or has stayed one for long. A play on the Elect noble rank, granted to people for their accomplishments.
Master Key -- 30mm armor-piercing rounds. Opens up anything.
Road Pizza -- Roadkill.
Panzerbrothel -- A confusing mess of parked vehicles.
Prank Call -- Pointless bullshit on the platoon radio frequency. "Maintain radio silence until contact. No prank calling."
Workout Weight -- Antitank mine. Weighs a ton.
Altaflor Flower Ursela -- All Fucked Up.

I actually understood the references from the moment you first posted the idea for this. I just didn't comment because it seemed obvious.

Not all mine, I have to admit. There's an old Finnish joke:

"What is the similarity between a soldier and an apple?"
"They both break down in nature."

So I just took that and went a little further.

Awesome. I was worried the joke would be a bit too obscure.

But yes. Antediluvia = Biblical reference, monarchy, drafted army. All old ideas. Precambria = scientific concept, democracy, professional military. New ideas.

Well, there's one bit where the Antediluvia/Precambria dichotomy breaks down. Antediluvia rejects magic (at least, officially), a new idea, while Precambria embraces it, an old idea.

That's one way to look at it. My idea, though, was that since magic has been around since forever, it's not really comparable to our world. Antediluvia purged magic when it became a (perceived) threat, without looking into other options. Precambria allows magic and technology to coexist. Which is the "old" idea, eradicating it if you don't like it, or finding a way to integrate it into society?

Good point. Speaking of magic, as soon as I get the map finished, I'll come up with the laws of magic.

Altaflor is in the Northwest coast, near that peninsula, and Blakrocke is in the mountain chain of the central highlands, on an high elevation. Will supply coordinates tomorrow.

Part 2 of my politics piece, following up on the ranks of nobility I laid out.

The Concile Seney is an assembly of appointed nobles, the function of which is to propose and debate bills. They must convene at the behest of the sovereign, but may also convene of their own accord (with the sovereign's approval). Following each decision -- which is determined by a vote -- the consul presents the Concile's findings to the sovereign, who may or may not choose to heed the Concile's decisions. As such, the Concile serves more of an advisory role than a legislative one.

If a noble is charged with a crime, they are able to request being judged before the Concile Seney instead of before the regular courts. The Concile can also veto the regular court's rulings.

There are 160 seats: 150 are held by nobles (known as the Sieges Temporal), while the other 10 are held by major members of the clergy of Gammar Gammura (known as the Sieges Clercal); the latter, unlike the former, are appointed for life; while the former only retain their seat as long as the sovereign who appointed them is in power. If a noble who sits on the Concile dies, they are replaced by the inheritor of their title. When a religious figure who sits on the Concile dies, another is appointed by the sovereign from a group of candidates presented by the religion's main governing body.

Consul
When a new king or queen succeeds to the throne, they appoint a consul (who may be dismissed and replaced by the sovereign at any time). All adult Antediluvian citizens are technically eligible for the position, but in practice all have been nobles. Following their appointment, the consul then has a period of one month to select 200 candidates from all the nobles of the country (of course, bribery and bias are never involved in this process and all candidates are selected based on merits alone), from which the sovereign is to choose 150; these 150 then become the Concile Seney. At all meetings, the consul acts as Orator of the Chamber, a role that entails moderating debate, making rulings, announcing the results of votes, and presenting all results to the sovereign.

When the sovereign dies, the consul becomes the executor of their will and, until the next sovereign succeeds, becomes the head of government (but not the head of state). In times of crisis (such as if the capital is placed under siege), the consul is vested with near-absolute power in order to deal with the threat effectively and can make executive decisions without consulting the sovereign, though they are still under the authority of the sovereign and the sovereign is still technically both head of state and head of government.
