Leave that up to intelligence. Our life expectancy is much shorter than theirs so we should worry more about surviving than studying plants.

Well obviously only one person would be studying plants. And their main role would be to figure out a) what makes them tick, and b) the best ways to counteract them.

Gender binary. Non-binary (as Gren and I are IRL) would be if you don't identify as either male or female (at least not exclusively; there are a lot of subgroups within the non-binary label).

Mulder's not a guy who really cares about what gender someone might be, though his personal views indicate that he doesn't really believe that transgenderism is a thing.
