A snake, huh? Well that little reptile might just have problems with Timothy's Pine Marten and Northern Harrier. I think both species are hunters of snakes. Or, just enemies, at the least.

If you already started somewhere else, its cool. You don't want the hassle of retconning, and I don't want the hassle of hassling my players.
Just make sure, wherever you wake up, to make you way to Navarone, and get in that briefing room.
