His father sold vegetables and his mother, a relatively gentle and kind woman throughout his entire life, was a weaver of baskets. His School life began on a sour note; on his first day of school he brought a toy gun to school and pretended to shoot the Principal. After almost being suspended he made it to class with little incident. A few months later, nearing the end of the half of his first year, Athanasios made friends with a young boy whose father was a loyal member of "Golden Dawn". Around this time he learned about Constantine XI, last Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, Greek national hero, and Athanasios' personal inspiration.

Between the age of 5 and 7 Athanasios went to several Golden Dawn meetings, the boy finally becoming a junior member at the age of 9. At 14 he was attending every meeting they would hold on a regular basis; from marches to demonstrations that may have involved violence. When he received his tattoo Athanasios cried; not from pain but from pride. This mark was like the defining moment of his life. His hatred towards Turks and other non-European foreigners trying to enter Greece only intensified. He did not, however, have anything again'st European Partials, they were still his brothers after all.
