All I saw in that scene was Mace make childish attempts at negotiations, half-learned stabs at diplomacy his mother no doubt taught him from gritted teeth. His every attempt failed and annoyed Gatiss. (I don't give a fuck what his character's name is, he's Mark Gatiss.)

To be fair, the singing did make me seriously worry about his IQ. :P

Though that was some beautiful singing.

That's the thing with the Tyrell men, isn't it? Pretty and talented, but complete dipshits. Really, they're more suitable in Westerosi culture as brides than lords.

I think it's supposed to be ironic in that respect. The Tyrells seem to be foils to the Lannisters.

You could say that Cersei, much like Mace, was only ever fit to be a plaything for some high lord, but ended up herself in charge.

Yup. The mightiest house in Westeros is a de facto matriarchy... which makes Randyll Tarly's position as Mace's foremost battle commander rather ironic.

There's also the issue of how the heads of each house deal with their women's roles in court politics: Cersei is expected by her father and uncle to be an utterly passive piece in the game. Margaery, on the other hand, is encouraged by her grandmother to be proactive.

But then again, she's always been a bitch.

Indeed.

Tywin didn't try to teach Cersei how to play the game, and ended up with a daughter convinced that she was a far better schemer than she actually was.

Tywin fucked up significantly in many, many ways.

But he also gave us the beautiful star that is Tyrion, and for that surely we must forgive him of his other sins.

Yes, but she might not have been a useless one whose first reaction to anything she doesn't like is to burn it and damn the consequences.

She's always had too much of Tywin's cruelty to ever be a good person, though she may have ended up - like Tywin himself - at the very least useful.

Olenna is the last grandparent of Loras and Margaery; Tywin fills her role as the last grandparent of Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen. Both are older, wiser, and take-no-bullshit political titans with great influence and respect.

Mace and Cersei are just dumb as rocks.

Joffrey is a sadistic twat, which contrasts with both of the Tyrell children. Myrcella, like Margaery, is married to a royal boy far from her home, and generally seems competent and intelligent. Tommen, like Loras, is a boyish young man whose sexual habits are focused on.

The only one that doesn't fit into this foil is Jaime; perhaps because he is a foil to Willas Tyrell, the oldest son of Mace from the books, absent from the show. Willas is the heir to Highgarden, a decent warrior in his own right before being crippled in a fight with Oberyn Martell, which left him with a bad leg. So both Willas and Jaime are handicapped warriors, but Willas begins as a kind and scholarly figure, while Jaime has to grow into that over time.

And, perhaps most apparent, is that House Lannister may command more respect and influence at the beginning, but it has no more money, meaning that it needs to rely on other connections and loans from the Iron Bank. House Tyrell begins having influence, but far less than the Lannisters, and over time it gains more and more; and the Tyrells, unlike the Lannisters, do not need to rely on other houses, and are able to declare Renly as the King pretty much on their own. And they maintain large amounts of food and supplies needed all over the Seven Kingdoms.

My predictions for the finale;

- Davos returns from the Wall. Seeking comfort after Shireen's death, he and Stannis fuck under the night sky. It's beautiful.

- Roose chokes to death on his own blood. Ramsay assumes control of House Bolton and immediately converts Winterfell into a charity, having had a change of heart spurred by the tender tears of Reek. He then has Reek murdered in revenge, because hey, old habits die hard.

- Littlefinger's army shows up at Moat Cailin and is slaughtered by the ghost of Ned Stark, because fuck off from his daughter, you creepy bastard. Brienne shows up and high fives Ned's ghost. Jaime would do so as well, but tragically has never learned how to high five with his left hand.

- Cersei and Margaery team up to escape the High Sparrow. Both are captured, and Margaery escapes by pushing Cersei down as a distraction.

- Joffrey dies.

- Tyrion conquers Meereen with a bit of charm and a lot of stabbing.

- Tormund beats the Lord of Bones's corpse with a staff for twenty minutes, because fuck that guy.

- Jon teaches the Night's King the meaning of friendship.

- Syrio and the Greatjon team up and conquer the Westerlands.

- Shireen was just hiding.

- Sam teaches a wight to read.

- In the last scene, the Hound and Thoros team up to fight crime in the gritty world that is under the Riverlands under the Freys, setting up the buddy cop plot that will occupy the last three seasons.
"Then I was fertilized and grew wise;
From a word to a word I was led to a word,
From a work to a work I was led to a work."
- Odin, Hávamál 138-141, the Poetic Edda, as translated by Dan McCoy.

Crowley and Tyrion should meet.

They'd both love each other.

Crowley and Lewis are the transdimensional counterparts to Tyrion and Bronn.
