On the wings of angels
Standing nervously on the doorstep of a Virginia manor home, a soldier in a Marine Corps seeming uniform of full black trimmed with gold stood, the cover upon his head was solid black with a large golden eagle bearing two swords in each taloned grip, wings outstretched, and lightning bolts crossed behind it. With a trembling hand he reached forward and knocked on the door, every fiber of his being humming with anticipation as the solid thud of his gloved hand echoed through the large porch and into the house. He could hear no sound, until three sets of footsteps were heard along with the dragging of a metallic object across the floor. He knew exactly who it was as three small voice chimed in near unison, "Mommy, it's a solider!"
Annabelle, Aelianna, and Jamie could be heard running off, one of them must have tripped as a large thud came off the floor; the young man covered his mouth with a closed hand and snickered as the one who had fallen yelled, "I'm okay!", and it sounded like Jamie - she was the one most notorious for falling and tripping. Tiny little foot falls could be heard, someone edging closer to the door, little metallic creaks as if climbing a step ladder; and then a scream as if murder had happened just on the other side of that solid oak door.
Flinging the door wide open a girl stood, just slightly over four foot in height, her long flaming auburn hair pulled into a ponytail, she wore an apron of patriotic design with an eagle across the chest; leaping forward she coiled herself around the trooper. "They said you were dead, they said..." Her wet emerald eyes were very passionate and yet full of sorrow as this young lady of well into her twenties hugged the soldier.
"I know, I know," resting a hand against her cheek the soldier removed his gloves and felt the warmth of her face, brushing tears from her cheeks. Her accent was the perfect blend between a London dialect and the Appalachian tone, which was perfect music to his ears after a long time of hearing nothing but ringing, "I am sorry I was not able to call, they barred me from communication until it was certain I had regained my full mindset." He figured to Hell with the uniform and fell to his knees as the lass crumpled with relief.
"I am glad you are safe, alive most certain. I expect a good anniversary present for the Hell you put me through constantly." Smiling through the remaining tears the lass kissed her partner's cheek. He laughed and nuzzled his nose against hers.
The two stood up, and the gal extended her arms up to her partner, "Can you carry me?" He shook his head with a brief chuckle before nodding, "Yeah." She jumped up into his arms, but his right arm was too slow and ended up getting caught between her legs, sliding up before a squeak came from her mouth. The three girls came running around the corner of the atrium and looked at the pair, her chest braced against his left shoulder while most of her weight was balanced on his right arm was halfway vanished among her dress.
"Daddy!" The girls rushed forward before they all three cocked their heads to the side, "What are you two doing?" Excitement had turned to confusion.
Sitting the young lady down, both their faces red as fruit, the seemingly young parents simply shrugged, "Nothing, what are you three doing?" The lass glared at the young man as he brushed his thumb against his trousers.
"Playing Army, we are fighting zombies; want to play?" The man shook his head and stated not now, as they ran off with toy guns in hand he turned to noticed the young lady's eyes glaring into his very soul.
"You did that on purpose!" He shook his head, "Don't even try to sound angry, I saw the look on your face. Married for almost a hundred years and you expect me to not know every look and expression you are capable of giving?" She turned on heel and walked down the hall towards the kitchen.
One cannot blame them, this is typical of the Hellsings, after all they were anything but the average family.
