Glory of the Republic
Excerpts From Notable PaletiniansBeginnings of an Empire
"They say we settled what is known as the City of Paletine first a nomads. Why would our ancestors not do so? The river that runs through the city provided an ample water supply and the land was fertile. So instead of huts we built out of stone and learned how to plow the fields. Our chieftan became a King as outlying settlements were formed that pledged their fealty to our great city. In the early days of Paletine, it was told that our ancestors were plagued with blood mages in the countryside. They abducted travelers and those who wandered too far for their unholy rituals. King Saerios sent many war parties to exterminate them but the mages proved uncanny in their ability to hide. The task of driving them out was one of strife and death but we managed to do so in the end.
Destroying the mages has let our city grow into the wonder that it is now. Yet there are many who say it is time to expand. We Paletinians are outgrowing Paletine and must look to our borders. There are other villages and towns that could benefit under our rule. King Aurelian has declared himself Emperor and marches with an army once these winter months have ended. This is a major turning point in the history of our peoples or so Aurelian says. Kings have promised things in the past but have failed to deliver. Nevertheless, I have hope in this man. Upon meeting him I determined that he was a man of strong convictions." -Publius the Historian, 213 AL
The Secret Ones
"Witches, mages, werewolves, vampires, traitors, rebellious slaves and foreign powers. These are just some of the many things that threaten the security of the Empire. I have devoted my life to seeking out these threats by building a vast spy network. We operate in the shadows using subterfuge to make sure that the Empire's enemies are snuffed out like candles before they can do any real harm. My men and women are well trained. Although not all are of impeccable character. Some may be veterans of the Imperial Army's scouts. Others, cutthroats from the alleys of the Empire's cities. But we need such disreputable individuals for their skills in matters clandestine. My network has worked tirelessly to gather knowledge, resulting in the slaying of even the most powerful of witches and victories on the battlefield. As our Empire grows, so does the power of the enemies we face. I propose my liege, that we make this official and that the Arcani Order be established. Our armies cannot be the only weapon in the Empire's arsenal. You have seen first hand how we can severely reduce the cost of victory when we assassinated the barbarian chieftan Sarda, when we opened the gates Nikomodia for our legionnaires and when we poisoned the druid Sorceress Arminia in her keep. We will work tirelessly to keep Paletine secure from those who would do it harm and to further the Enlightenment using our crafts. Our Order shall terrorize our enemies and learn their unholy secrets." -Praetor Heiderian Gartholos to Emperor Aurelian IV, First Grand Master of the Arcani Order, 285 AL
Enlightenment and The Burdens We Must Inflict
"Aurelian I's successful campaigns marked the start of a new movement in the Paletinian peoples which many are calling the Enlightenment. After witnessing first hand the inferiority of the fiefdoms, tribes and city states we have conquered, it is now clear to the Paletinian people that we have a sacred duty to Gaea and its sentient races. As servants of the gods, it is our mission to bring the light that is our civilization to the savages of Gaea so they may ascend from their darkness. At times the petty kingdoms submit willingly for they have enough wisdom to see the true path. Others must be coerced to assimilate. It is a regrettable thing when we must use violence to bring other peoples into the light. Yet necessary so that their future generations may flourish under the rule of our Emperors. The practice of placing others in bonds of servitude has grown considerably. Our slave markets are bustling and the business is profitable. We make sure that the slaves are kept in line. Slaves collars and branding are now required by law. Slave owners are encouraged to have their more unruly slaves flogged. In extreme circumstances, crucifixion is used to send a harsh message of the cost of disobedience. Empires are not only won, they are built. Labor is necessary in the fields and mines. We do so to raise cities, build roads to facilitate trade, ships to take to the high seas and temples to honor the gods which have generously blessed our glorious Empire. For those we have conquered we have brought commerce, wealth, culture, education and prosperity. Paletinian roads now connect them to the world at large where they were once stuck in primitive isolation. Our aqueducts bring water to where it is scarce. We build theaters, docks, and forums for the exchange of knowledge and ideas. Expanding the Empire is as much about Paletinian hegemony as it is our obligation to uplift the rest of Gaea. Our enemies call us cruel. Slavery, violence, these are burdens we must inflict on others for the greater good." -Claudian, Tribune of his majesty Emperor Aurelian IV, 302 AL
Atlae Wars
"Many a legionnaire has died in this great conflict. I look upon my men with sorrow at the hardships they will face in the coming months. We have sacked cities, won battles and marched for days on end. Some die by the sword, others from sickness. Last year, dysentery spread throughout the camp. I lost so many men and had to retreat until Paletine could send reinforcements. Fresh faced recruits outnumber the veterans now. To make matters worse, the Atlae are angry. Before the sickness swept through my army, Duke Eiparus pledged his support and the submission of his lands to the Empire. The man went back on his word. To send a message I stormed his city with my army and had every man, woman and child crucified along the three main roads leading toward the city. Five thousand unfortunate wailing Atlae hung from Paletinian crosses. The Atlae call me a butcher. My heart aches at the atrocity I had ordered. I do what is necessary for the Enlightenment, even if that means slaying the innocent.
Having to retreat was a disaster for morale. Yet all is not lost. Little by little, I have been reinvigorating the confidence of the army. We have won a few small victories. Capturing redoubts and a few skirmishes here and there. The Atlae are at their wits end and in their desperation have gathered a large host to face me in the field. Soon enough, the battle to decide the fate of the Empire and Atlae will be fought. I pray to the gods for victory. This war has lasted fifty years now and I am determined to see its end. I will bring glory to the Empire and the Atlae into the light."-Praetor Ator Illethrios, Supreme Commander of the Imperial Army, 365 AL, two weeks before the Battle of Faels
Rise of the Republic
"We have had great Emperors, good Emperors and terrible Emperors. The patricians who dared have always questioned the virtues of placing rule in the hands of one man. Emperor Hadrios is inept. He has done nothing to further the Enlightenment and imprisons men of outstanding character where they can be of use to the Empire. Us Paletinians are no stranger to violence, but to turn on our own citizens without cause. Tis reprehensible! Hadrios's greatest folly came when he declared his brother Julian a traitor. False accusations and trumped up charges! But before Julian could be captured, he fled the city of Paletine. A morale man, he has rallied the support of us Republicans in the south. We seek to establish a Senate to rule in place of an Emperor. A man should be given power because of his merit, not his birth. Those who are the most capable should be made to lead us so that our civilization can grow to its full potential. It is for these reasons that we have created the Paletinian Republic. Though we may be outnumbered, our cause is just. We shall wage war on the Imperials until they are utterly broken. With victory, Paletine shall see a new birth of prosperity. This I am certain. For Paletine and the Enlightenment!" -Tiberian Veletus, Paletinian Senator of the newly formed Paletinian Republic, 380 AL

Character Name: Blaine Globetrotter
Character Race: Engarian
Character Age: 38
Character Dynasty/House/Clan: N/A
Character Dynastic History: N/A
Character Physical Description or Image: A short, burly, hairy man. He's usually filthy, although he can make himself look presentable when need be. His skin is well-tanned and his hands have calluses on their calluses. On a typical day Blaine wears old leather boots, a basic tunic, and a ruddy antelope-hide cloak. His hair is black and his eyes are brown. Blaine's face is one that just screams "friend": it has good symmetry and smile lines, and his eyes sparkle with charisma that has gotten him far in life.
Character Biography: Blaine has spent the vast majority of his life traveling. He was born the son of a farmer in a tiny hamlet in Engar. His father was abusive and his mother died when he was a baby. After his village was raided by an invading army, Blaine decided he'd had enough of his life and left town with nothing but a few coins he stole from his dad and his clothes. Eventually he got to a small port where he managed to get a job on a boat returning to Marzgol-Kai. He spent a year in Marzgol-Kai, doing odd jobs and occasionally working as a thief. In the end he grew tired of living on the streets and got himself a job in a traveling merchant's caravan to Ulah-Tar. From Ulah-Tar, which he instantly despised, Blaine got a job on a ship headed down the coast to Zhou. He learned most of what he knows about sailing on that ship, and he spent weeks at a time in every coastal city in the Orient before getting to Zhou.
In Zhou Blaine enjoyed a slightly better lifestyle than he was accustomed to, having a steady job as a dock foreman and an apartment. He lived there for 2 years before the wanderlust took him again. He saved up and bought a small boat, stocked up on some provisions, and left up the Ghora river. Blaine traveled along the coast of the Inland Sea of Ghora for awhile, fishing for food and stopping at the sparse Tutish settlements to rest and fill up on water. After months of slow travel Blaine came to the mouth of the Oro, and rowed up it a bit before the fish stopped being plentiful, at which point he stopped at a Mari Mari village. He befriended the Mari Maris and lived their lifestyle for 5 years, until his village was raided by another tribe and he was forced to flee on his boat. He now lived as the Mari-Mari do, and he gained sustenance from the land.
In time Blaine came to the land of the Vandons, where he was captured by a Vandon raiding party. Fortunately, their leader took a liking to him and eventually Blaine became the right-hand man to Gan Buri-Gan, one of the savage warlords of that land. He had a knack for politics(as basic as they might have been in that barbaric wasteland) and became notable throughout the Vandon-lands as a skillful strategist. Blaine was there for 3 years before he decided it was time to leave. He commissioned a seaworthy boat, hired a crew, and made off down the Haszarpul, seeking the lands of the Palatine that he had heard of.
After a few harrowing events on the vampire coast and a near-disaster near Necropol, Blaine finally landed in Augusti. From there he built a life for himself as a shipmaster, hiring his boat out to merchants in the Imperium. He has been doing that ever since, traveling all across the western coast on the whims of his clients. He's also made many friends in high places, mostly with his charisma and warm personality.
Equipment/Important personal items: A boat, a crew for the boat, a few exotic weapons, a journal.

I did. I said that the Imperial line is dead and I added that tidbit of lore in case anybody wanted to go after the last emperor's treasure. What did you have in mind?

Various possibilities. One is they land on the Isle of Werewolves, believing that it's the mainland having been blown off course, are attacked in the night by werewolves resulting in them all becoming werewolves (unknown to themselves), fleeing the island the next day and then sailing to Numera, which over several years they take over from behind the scenes.
Second option is they head north and invade Rhaedan, over the next decade establishing a Volorian Empire between the Denor River and the Royal Reserve.
Final option is they head north further, through the river system, and find their way to Dur-Ganar, which fell to a necromancer long ago. The necromancer died, but his texts remain. The Emperor sacrifices a vast number of his companions over a lengthy period of time to gain control over the dead that inhabit Dur-Ganar. From there, having made himself into an undead, he plans in opening a gate to the lands of the dead to bring forth the imperial legions of old to retake his empire with all the resulting sacrifices required to open said portal needing to be obtained ICly.

Not really keen on these ideas as part of the Paletinian lore I'm afraid. I'd prefer that the Emperor just fled to a cave in the mountains somewhere, dying with his gold. It could be a quest to recover it for adventurers. Keep in mind that Hadrios only fled with a few trusted advisers and a completely shattered power base. The Civil War is suppose to be a complete and total victory for the Republicans.
