Gaea, A Fantasy Role Play (OOC/Master Thread) Always Open

Postby Imperialisium » Sat Nov 08, 2014 3:27 pm

Gaea

Gaea, the world, crafted in the image of the primordial; bathing, in all their glory and beauty. But also, their terrible, terrible passion. A world of wonder as much horror, and by no means short of middle ground to assail the common folk.-Eonwaris, Chief Scribe and Historian of the Twilight Fortress. The Attributes of Fate, Vol II, iii.

The Birthing

In the beginning there was nothing, ever darkness, save for a mass of formless energy anchored in the center of this ever dark. For an eternity this was all there was; but, through the passage of aeons the energy burst and waxed like the moons. In an ever and all directional tidal wave the cosmos was born as the antithesis to this prior nothing that surrounded it.

As this energy gave manifest to the Heavens the first to arrive were the Vaulted Ones. Great Beings, giving the Heavens material form and shape, and the foremost among them: Aeman. Aeman gave the cosmos laws and shaped Heavenly bodies across the skies. It was Aeman that planted the seeds of twin arks, spherical bodies that would be host to life. For Aeman saw that the ultimate destiny of the cosmos was to belong to other, smaller beings that would wonder at the ever changing universe in full glory.

These twin bodies, Aearth and Gaea, two bodies representing one creation. For countless years Aeman and other Vaulted formed, gave birth, and soothed them into being hosts for life. Teeming with plants, animals, and forming in their own images the sentient races.

But, not all of the Vaulted Ones shared this value of being the caretakers of things seeming so small and insignificant in an ever expanding universe. A schism, unlike any that would come after, developed and broke the Vaulted Ones into two. The Dark Ones who wished to exert influence over these lesser races. Rather than shepherd the younger races to fruition. Thus darkness wrested with light, one seeming to triumph over the other before being driven back. In a last act of love Aeman cut out his own soul and split it into two. Driving his divided soul into the hearts of Aearth and Gaia and thus banishing the Dark Ones from freely walking on both worlds. But at a cost, Aeman was split into two; Vaemidia, bringer of life; Avalar, bringer of death.

However, the Dark Ones would not be so easily cheated, and thus in a last act of spite they sundered the twin arks. Separating Aearth and Gaia from one another for all eternity…

Intro

Welcome to Gaea! A world of wonder and danger, magic and sorcery, beauty and horror! This is a role play/world-building/hang-out-for-fantasy –lover’s type deal. So this is meant to be rather large scale, but always the primary focus is to have fun and enjoy your time here. There will be role playing, and lots of it; also, there will be world-building. Every setting needs a world and I always enjoy allowing other people to create their own stuff within the rule’s parameters. This allows everyone to get their own piece of the pie, and like ingredients to said pie, coming together in utter deliciousness. Yum…pie.

As such we invite people to take the already established world and through role play or adding in ideas mold it to whatever shape we can create. Do you want to rise create your own realm? Overthrow your monarch? Become a Vampire? Be a Monster slayer? Perhaps being a Mercenary? Hell even a prostitute-assassin-sorceress hybrid (keep it PG-13 please for the lewd category, this is a respectful establishment!). The choice is yours.

Setting

Gaea, is a fantasy world, and whenever possible leaning to realism or low fantasy with just enough high fantasy to allow variance. There are of course many established nations and cultures people can relate to our own world in real life. Such as the Greco-Roman/Byzantine themed Paletine people, the Norse themed Naedse, the Hungarian themed people of Eszog, and the Germanic/French Middle Ages themed Saerheastan realms. If you look at the whole map you’ll see references to the Khmer Empire, China during antiquity and middle ages, the Mongols, African Tribes, Middle-Eastern Caliphates, Migration Era tribes, and the whole nine yards.

This is mixed with Elves, Dwarves, Dragons, and so forth.

The role play will begin in 503 AL (After Palan’s Landing) and proceed however we wish. I generally go pace of plot and keep time consistent if abstract.

On Magic

The Thing about Magic is that it can be fickle.-Archlord Asyran of Valtmeris circa 7 AL, Volumes of Fate, ix

Magic, Sorcery, Wizardry, or whatever else you want to call it. Is a rare art, and a dangerous one at that. While there are quite a few dabblers in Magic there are few Masters. Magic can do great things, and also terrible ones as well. But for the most part almost all Magic requires a price, or something in exchange. Cast a fire ball, well if you miss-caste/miss-pronounce/or even in some cases touch that magical fire you'll get burned---Usually very badly. That's just one example, so learn and use magic at your own discretion. A rule of thumb, the more powerful the amount the higher the price, shoot lightning you might crack a rib if you are not careful. Summon a Wraith, better hope you know proper binding incantation or you'll probably get killed. Want to bind a Demon you probably will have to cut off a finger or someone is going to cut off something.

Magical artifacts are roughly similar, some require a price for their usage. Others do not and can be used freely; however, the majority of these objects have a recharge time or can run out of whatever makes them tick. So use wisely.

Rules

1.The OP will intervene when necessary, and therefore promoting role players to talk it out amongst themselves first. So be respectful to each other.
2. Be fair, you are not god-like (that and the actual far more real Gaean Gods will love to dick you over).
3. I reserve the right to appoint Administrative positions for those who desire it. Like Co-Op or an additional map editor and what not.
4. When in doubt stick to realism, if you’ve been beheaded you are not coming back unless some MAJOR being with enough mojo grabs your soul and rams it back into you. The hope being they also took the courtesy of re-attaching your head. This is also a pre-gunpowder setting, not that you need it, I mean we have magic.
5. Magic is allowed, but don’t wank it. To reference a TV show, “All Magic comes at a Price!” (Brownie points for whoever gets that)
6. Rules are subject to change.
7. Nations are expected to have actual problems, what I mean is that for example large Empires are HARDER to hold together internally and possibly externally. This keeps the nation-playing field level enough to allow realistic power shifting and keep things fluid. If need be I’ll conjure up something.
9. No you cannot be a God.
10. Please use decent grammar and spelling (Secondary School/High School level please) and at least a paragraph
11. Posts must be at least 6 complete sentences in length along with headers for each section (if you have more than one section), detailing the location, point of view, and year it takes place.
12. do not double or triple post in the OOC or IC unless you are a Sub-OP or the OP (Myself).
13. Three warnings and you are out of the role play.

It was under Aalan V that the Saerheastan Kingdom was at its greatest extant, during the late 3rd Century and early 4th Century AL. Since then the Kingdoms fortunes have been mixed, it suffers frequent incursions of Oguin from the South, Vampires from the Whisperhead Mountains, and other horrors. Nationstates Nation: Imperialisium
Character Name: Lucaya af Sveipjoddottir (Birth name), Lucina Bloodmane (current)
Character Race: Naedic Vampire
Character Age: 359 (appears 19)
Character Dynasty/House/Clan (if applicable): af Sveipjod (former), Bloodmane (current)
Character Dynastic History (History of your family): The Sveipjod's was one of the original clans that arrived on the Continent. Descended by Bjorn Serpentslayer and allegedly by the Valkura Kazja. The Sveipjods retained a village along the Western fjords and shores of the Fjord of Freyja. They where not powerful nobles, being relatively minor, but wealthy enough to tend to their people and themselves well enough.

Character Physical Description or Image (as in Picture): Lucaya possesses raven hair with streaks of blonde. Earning her the nickname, "star hair," by the warriors of Sigurd. Her eyes are piercing grey with flecks of green and purple. She is beautiful by all accounts, and quite the seductress despite her reserved personality.
Character Biography:
Lucaya was the daughter of Sigurd af Sveipjod, a Naedic Chieftain that controlled a village along the Western shores of the Fjord of Freyja. In the many smaller Fjords that ring the area. Lucaya lived a peaceful existence as the daughter of the Jarl, at least until 12 when a Vampire raid occurred. Most of the villagers where killed and her father turned. Lucaya was spared, some say the Vampire leader took a fancy at her, though she was never raped. In fact the Vampires took care of her as they bore her back to Vampyra. A city they had just claimed by conquest.

There she lived as a human until she turned 19, when her father in a coup killed the former Vampire leader that had burned their village and took control. He turned his daughter out of fear that she may die and he live on. A last remnant to the life they both had one would suppose.

In that time Lucaya as learned many things about the world, and that cruelty is never in short supply. Her father, having for years striven to be the man he was before being turned, slowly slipped into being a ruthless leader of the undead. The constant infighting and cajoling that plagued the politics of Vampyra was suited to the warrior-chief of the Naedse.

Now she is the daughter of Sigurd Bloodmane, and has earned her own laurels with his fathers new, "tribe," as he is wont to call them. That being the Blackhearts.

Lucaya, however in all her years has become rather learned. A capable shield maiden in her own right, and learned thanks to her unaging body.

Equipment/Important personal items (if applicable): Lucaya has black armor like her father, full plate, but it is light and does not easily hinder her nimble body. For it was forged by the Shadow Elves of the Southern Kalzmere hundreds of years ago, and taken on a raid in 210 AL. Being a gift presented to her by her father.

Moonsinger- Lucaya's sword, forged out of black iron with red edges. Its bone handle was once the hand of an Ungarn horselord that crossed blades with her father and lost.

Bow and 48 arrows dipped in poison.

Hello!

You can reserve a High Elf nation on the map, but not the race. Sorry about the spoilers, the second Operator post is still getting work done on it.

So, question: Are the independent city states supposed to be part of any nations we create?

Its their default status, so once a role player claims them via app they are a part of the player nation. When the IC starts any Independent City-State or Polity remains independent until conquered/assimilated/annexed/vassalized or what not.

Using the Nation App for Independent Realms
I will give an example
Nation Name: Kingdom of X
Ruler (if applicable): King X III
Government Type: Absolute Monarchy
Government Hierarchy: King as total power with few restrictions. The Queen has no power and the monarch is assisted by a small Council of six advisors. Beneath King X are the three Dukes of A, B, and C. The Dukes in turn are the liege lords of the Counties Et Cetera, while the Count of D is a direct vassal of King X. (You can go in much more detail I'm sure)
Formation: Formed in 376 AL (you can go into how it was formed if you want)
Succession Laws: Primogeniture (Eldest child inherits)
Gender Laws: Absolute Cognatic (Females inherit equally with Males)
Geographic territory: Possessing Old Sarin as the Capital the Kingdom of X controls the lands East to the Atanos River, North to the Asaheim Mountains, West to the Great Forest, with the Northwest border at Ragnar's Hold and Elmont Castle and along the southern shore of Lake Raemaris. The Southern border yada yada yada

You can also list major landmarks you start out with, in this example:
Old Sarin
Eagle's Claw Keep
Fregar's Stead
Ragnar's Hold
Elmont Castle
Castle Paleis
Southmarch Castle
so on and so forth
Population: 950,000 (this is Ancient Era-Medieval tech without Gunpower, so populations of the most populous Kingdoms will not really exceed more than a few Million at start)
Military Strength: 10-15,000 Royal Army
Military Info: (go into detail on your military), note there is realism so professional troops will be rare and most likely expensive to maintain. Most of the time people will use Levies of peasants or citizens, Mercenaries (if you got the coin), Feudal retinues of the feudal lords that answer your call and their levies.
Currency: What currency and system you use. Like the name of the coins or whatever you use and does four types of coin A equal one Coin B?
History: History of your nation (No nation is going to be f*ck long historically, the Elves and Dwarves you'd see distinct Realms of over a thousand years but not Humans)

Anything no one claims will be like AI in a video game. Players incorporate what's set and then during the IC they can customize in more detail like rename cities, build stuff, take over places, make or change laws etc like any other role play

I've got a nice storyline I'd like to do involving a few characters.

Nationstates Nation: Super-Llamaland
Character Name: Alaric Geroux
Character Race: Half Anglarikan, Half Saerheastan
Character Age: 26
Character Dynasty/House/Clan (if applicable): House of Geroux (leaders of Castle Paleis)
Character Dynastic History (History of your family):
FATHER: Alain Geroux, dead and exiled secondborn child of Christian Geroux, current Saerheastan duke and commander of Castle Paleis (information about the Gerouxs under Christian Geroux, but remember that Alain doesn't know he's one of those Gerouxs yet.
MOTHER: Anna Simon
Character Physical Description or Image (as in Picture): Decently tall, longish brown hair, green eyes, lean, athletic
Character Biography:
Geroux, born to an Anglarikan mother and Saerheastan mother, never seemed to fit in, and as such at nineteen, after the death of his father, he fled Jaegenburg, seeking to become an expert swordsman. Eventually he found an instructor in an exiled Anglarikan swordsman in the city of Bologne, but when the swordsman fled Bologne, he immediately left in pursuit. Taking on a series of guard jobs in order to find his teacher, he's traversed the world, the entire time not knowing he was heir to a foreign castle.
Equipment/Important personal items (if applicable):
-Sword
-A few things he found in his teacher's house immediately after he fled
-His father's ashes
-A few miscellaneous useful camping things and a sizable sum of money he's sized up
-Hand-drawn map of the world his mother bought for him, now densely creased

Nationstates Nation: Super-Llamaland
Character Name: Christian Geroux (Christian I of Paleis)
Character Race: Saerheastan
Character Age: 75
Character Dynasty/House/Clan (if applicable): House of Geroux
Character Dynastic History (History of your family):
The Gerouxs rose to power in Castle Paleis over a century ago, defeating the old rulers (who were more RL-German than RL-French) in a vicious battle under Christian's grandfather Norman I of Paleis. Since then, they've kept things running more or less smoothly.
Character Physical Description or Image (as in Picture): Old, white hair, of average height. Blue eyes so sharp you could cut your hand badly on them and be taken to the hospital and bleed out a good bit. Surprisingly ordinarily-looking, although the regal posture's definitely there.
Character Biography:
Christian Geroux's life went mostly like that of your typical second heir to the throne when, at sixteen, he discovered his limited magical capabilities. Since then, he's been able to perform minor telekinesis, although this didn't effect any part of his rule, except for the bit where he rammed a brick into his older brother's head to ascend to power. He is a bit ruthless, but after a few other, only slightly-less ruthless Gerouxs (and the ruling family before that was just as bad, if not worse), he still comes across as a decent sort of leader, except towards those he suspects of treason. Still, after exiling the dangerous heir Alain, he's set things up for the more placid Norman to rule, and hopes to extend the Gerouxs despite (IC-German) racial tensions.
Equipment/Important personal items (if applicable):
-A ridiculously large collection of trinkets he keeps in his stateroom

NOTE: I plan to RP this character slightly less than the other two's adventures.

Nationstates Nation: Super-Llamaland
Character Name: Camdyn Autenburg
Character Race: Anglarikan
Character Age: 25
Character Dynasty/House/Clan (if applicable): Haha nope
Character Dynastic History (History of your family):
"So you're heir to a castle," the barkeeper said thoughtfully to Alaric, then turned to face Camdyn. "And how 'bout you, lad? A prince?"

"Common as dirt, sir," Camdyn replied uniformly.

Character Physical Description or Image (as in Picture): Average height, sandy blond hair, blue eyes.
Character Biography:
Born to a tailor and his wife in Jaegenburg and was one of Alaric's few friends. After Alaric left, he pursued a few careers and eventually struck out, meeting Alaric in the south in a chance meeting. The two rebonded quickly, and when Alaric went to pursue his teacher, it was with Camdyn, a resourceful and skilled tracker who loved the outdoors.
Equipment/Important personal items (if applicable): None really.

Nationstates Nation: Novitera
Character Name: Cassian Lucius Polynikes
Character Race: Human
Character Age: 29
Character Dynasty/House/Clan (if applicable): Arcani Order
Character Dynastic History (History of your family): Cassius's family is in obscurity.
Character Physical Description or Image (as in Picture): 6'2", black hair, brown eyes, olive skin,
Character Biography:

Cassius is a full fledged member and veteran of the Arcani Order. The Arcani Order serve as a unit of spies, scouts, assassins and saboteurs for Paletine. They work in secret to gather intelligence and eliminate threats to the Republic both internally and externally. Highly trained and extremely dangerous, these agents are ones to be feared. They also hunt down and exterminate magic practitioners and "supernatural" beings within the Republic.

As for Cassius, after his father went to debtors prison, Cassius was taken in by the order. He was young at the time, only 12 years of age. The order gave young Cassius shelter and food. In exchange, he was to be trained in their arts. This included subterfuge, combat, stealth, languages and many other useful skills. By the time he was 18, he was ready to go into the field. Years of unparalleled success followed as Cassius rose to become one of the Oder's best agents. He conducted espionage, killed and conceived intricate plots of his own for the security of the Republic. Sometimes these things involved masquerading as a charming nobleman as Cassius is a master at deception. He has killed vampires, werewolves, sorcerers, treasonous Paletinian senators and enemy leaders alike. Cassius's greatest feat to date was uncovering and neutralizing a plot to assassinate the Consul.

When not in a cover identity, Cassius is a stoic man who seldom speaks. He can be genuinely charming and likable.

Equipment/Important personal items (if applicable):

Dagger - Magic Disrupting Properties
Handaxe - Magic Disrupting Properties
Poison Darts
Short Bow
Rope
Climbing Claws
Black Leather Cuirass
Necklace that dispels magical attacks or influence on the person

Nation Name: Paletine Republic
Liege: Praetor Falian Theopilos, Grand Master of the Arcani Order
Rank: N/A
Landed Titles: None
Honorary Titles: None
Holding(s) description: N/A
Vassals (if applicable): N/A
Population in Territory (that you’re directly controlling): N/A
Approximate Levy Size: N/A
Retinues (If applicable): 2 Acolytes, Messalina and Cassander
Mercenary (ies) (If Mercenary Leader add name of group and size): N/A

Nation Name: Paletinian Republic
Ruler (if applicable): Consul Valerian Aurelius
Government Type: Autocracy
Government Hierarchy: The Paletine Senate is a body of 120 men hailing from Paletine's patrician families. Once appointed to the Senate, they hold the position for life. Being granted a seat is done through different ways. It is headed by a Consul who is elected by the Senate. The Consul can appoint and dismiss praetors, military generals and governors but any action can be vetoed by the Senate by a 2/3 majority vote.
Formation: 213 AL
Succession Laws: Primogeniture. But appointment to the senate is not guaranteed.
Gender Laws: Women cannot participate in the military but may be appointed to the Senate. However, they can never be consul or any other administrative position.
Geographic territory: http://s28.postimg.org/vvrhvirxp/Paletine.png
Population: 5 Million
Military Strength: 14,000 Republic Army (Professional Force). Another 26,000 can be levied by Patrician families. Total fighting force is 40,000 if fully mobilized.
Military Info:

Military is both feudal and professional, comprised of troops raised by the Patrician families. A General is appointed by the Consul (if not himself) to command. Patrician families may send someone from their families to command their own troops but must follow the lead of the general.

The Republic makes use of heavy infantry, levies, battlefield artillery and archers/crossbowmen. Heavy infantry is used as well though sparingly. Superb light cavalry units to harass the enemy and scout. Military doctrine involves anchoring the battle line with the heavy infantry and using superior firepower to wreak havoc while the main line advances. Arcani are depended on to gather intelligence, conduct sabotage and sow discord by infiltrating enemy ranks beforehand. The Republic also maintains a very formidable naval force.

Arcani Order

An order devoted to the security of the Republic founded in 285 AL and originally only answerable to the Emperor. The Order joined the rebellion in 380 AL, contributing greatly to the Republican victory. Now they answer only to the Consul. The Arcani investigate and collect intelligence on threats to the Paletinian Republic, internally and externally, to report to the Senate or handle themselves. The Arcani also supports the military in its conquests, suppresses magic within the Republic, eliminates magical beings and watches over the slave population. Only members of the Arcani are allowed to use magic in the Republic. The order employs its own sorcerers who use their own brand of magic with a specific emphasis on dispel magic and crafting items which dispel magic for agents.

The Arcani Order fields spies, assassins and saboteurs to infiltrate the enemy ranks as well as keep watch over their own populace for dissidents and traitors. Targeted killings, sabotage, sowing discord, intimidating, seduction, bribery and espionage are just some of the methods used to achieve their goals. As such, many Paletinians have a constant fear of the Arcani for there is no telling who among them could be an agent. Arcani agents are rigorously trained in combat, subterfuge, stealth, combat against magic/magical beings and other arts. Without a doubt, this is a force to be feared.

The Arcani Order is headed by a Grand Master who is also a Praetor. Usually appointed from the ranks of the Arcani and confirmed into the position by the Senate.

Navy

The Republic Navy is an entirely professional force.

-10 Galleas
-20 Carracks
-20 Heavy Dromons
-30 Light Dromons
-40 Holks
-80 Galleys
-40 Cogs

Currency: Republic Hyperpyrons. Money of the Republic is considered very stable and many other societies often use it as the standard of which to compare their own currency. Coinage in order of value...
Solidus: Golden coin, most valuable currency
Follis: Silver, 7 Follis = 1 Solidus
Wreaths: Silver, 12 Wreaths = 1 Follis
Copper: Copper, 20 Coppers = 1 Wreath
Pence: Copper, 8 Pence = 1 Copper
History:

The Republic got its start as a simple township community headed by a King. Gradual expansion led Paletine to come into direct competition with surrounding fiefdoms and city states. Each time, the Kingdom was victorious allowing the Empire to form and grow steadily. Paletine Emperors thereafter conquered and assimilated surrounding peoples even granting citizenship to many of the conquered. However, the Palentinians have no qualms using slave labor either. Many of the conquered are sold or used as slaves within the Empire to help finance further military expansion.

Crossing the seas and conquering the Atlae Isles began in 315 AL. The campaign was a brutal one lasting 50 years with many great battles. In the final decisive battle, Praetor Illethrios defeated a far larger force by faking a retreat and leading the Atlae allied forces into unfavorable terrain. There they were surrounded on all sides by missile troops which obliterated them. Illethrios is hailed to this day as the greatest military strategist in Paletinian history. Atlae itself is now soundly assimilated into the Republic.

The end of the Atlae Wars marked a period of peace and prosperity for the Empire. But it was not to last. Greed and corruption divided the Empire resulting in a series of bloody civil wars that lasted forty years beginning in 380 AL. At its end, the last Paletinian Emperor was deposed by the victorious rebel forces. Emperor Hadrios fled with his remaining war chests with a few faithful allies to never be heard from again.

The rebel forces, no longer trusting an Imperial leadership created the Paletinian Republic. Now, the Senate rules in place of the Emperor which deliberates and votes on various issues. It is an autocratic state ruled by the upper classes but absolute power is never vested in one man. From this body is appointed the governors, magistrates and military commanders who see to the day to day of the Republic. Today the Paletine Republic stands firm as a beacon of civilization and power. The arts are highly respected and the Paletinians trade far and wide. Classical education, impressive architecture, advanced banking and public baths are some of the facets which define the Republic.

There are dark sides to the Republic. Much of what it has was built on the backs of slave labor. The slave population is carefully watched over by the Arcani which is ruthlessly effective at detecting both internal and external threats. Magic is found to be repugnant and outlawed save for members of the Arcani Order. The penalty for which is death. Those who practice magic within the Republic are hunted down and exterminated by the Arcani who are trained to do so. Vampires, werewolves and other magical beings are swiftly eliminated. Finally the Paletinian themselves have developed an attitude of superiority over other cultures, human or not. Although the Paletinians are still willing to allow other human cultures, elves, orcs and dwarves into the nation to trade or reside indefinitely. Other sentient species are excluded.
