I'm not fully caught up, so I may seem like a blind idiot writing this but - if this war is anything like historical Russian revolution - then the Reds control Eastern Russia, including Ukraine, which would mean they are at-least decent on food. If anything, the White Russians confined to the far less fertile Siberia would suffer, no?

I think the revolution is rather different. If I gathered it correctly the Reds lack Ukraine and are trying to get them to help by promising them independence if they fight for the Reds.

I think the revolution is rather different. If I gathered it correctly the Reds lack Ukraine and are trying to get them to help by promising them independence if they fight for the Reds.

We're promising everyone and everyone independence if they fight for us.

And we do lack Ukraine, as Wrangel and co are squatting in it.
