Name: Nathan Varicson
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Race: Human
(For Faunus) Animal Traits:
Appearance (Can be Picture):
Image

Bio (The longer the better):
Born into a relatively rich merchant family, Nathan is the first in his family for a full three generation either way to want to become a Hunter instead of running a business. Growing up in a relatively decent part of Vale above his fathers shop Nathan had a good childhood. Realizing that his only son was not interested in continuing the family business Nathan's father was able to hire a semi-retired hunter to at least train Nathan in the basics of fighting, although this never progressed far due to Nathan's mother being too protective of her son for him to actually travel with his teacher to even see a Grim besides from watching one in action from a video downloaded onto his Scroll. It was his teacher who got Nathan to apply for Beacon Academy without telling his parents before it was too late. Having passed the rigorous exams, Nathan is looking forward to Beacon.

Besides his parents Nathan has a single sister, Mirabelle, who is preparing to take over the family business once their father passes it on.

It was Nathan's idea to create his weapon, and it was through the work of Nathan, his teacher and a few of his teachers contacts that Artemis was created.

Nathan himself is more laid back than one would first assume, not desperate for attention he is happy to put in just enough work to be successful. Whilst not really lazy he does take things at his own, slower pace and does not like it when it is interrupted or he is forced to move more quickly. Whilst he does not think like a merchant, having been at least partially trained to be one Nathan is quite happy to use the skills he has been given and so will use what advantages he can to try broker deals with others, he is also willing to lie if need be although does not do so unless he cannot see another sensible way out of the conversation or situation he is in.

Weapon: Artemis
Appearance: When in passive/melee mode, a quarterstaff, in ranged mode a crossbow.
Capabilities: A solid quarterstaff that Nathan can use for both offensive and defensive purposes. The Crossbow however, is a semi-automatic, repeating crossbow that holds around 30 bolts at any one time. This is good as it takes a small while for Nathan to reload it in case of running out of bolts, normally putting him out of any potential action for a minute or two. Nathan carries several pouches of bolts, some containing dust-infused bolts that explode into the element of the dust used upon impact.
Other: Doesn't have the quickest change between modes, meaning that if caught unawares whilst Artemis is in crossbow mode Nathan could be at a severe disadvantage until he can change it safely into a quarterstaff.

Semblance: Focus Taking a deep breath in, time slows down for Nathan, allowing him to plan his next move or ready a shot others simply won't see coming. Focus only works whilst Nathan is holding his breath in and once he starts to exhale time quickens back up again for him.

Did you read the rules?: yes

Dolmhold wrote:Name: Zheng Bing (Chinese name order, thus Bing is his first name)
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Race: Human

Odd Traits: While not a faunas, due to his semblance, he can drink mercury and gain a healing effect of all things from it. Not the case if you guys really, really don't want it to be so. He also has a tendency to be subservient to authority, and has to mentally fight it in order to defy orders. In the words of a former mentor, "I maintain that, as long as you tell him loudly and clearly what to do, if you are senior to him he will cry 'Shi, Daren!' (yes sir!) and get on with it enthusiastically and efficiently whatever the situation."

Appearance: Dressed in the traditional way of his tribe, Zheng Bing has not once cut his hair, for it would sacrilege against his parents. Rather, he wears his hair in a tight army bun, occasionally sporting a turban. He wears a plain blue-green Hanfu tunic underneath his armor, which folds back into his tunic when not in battle. Overall, he appears akin to this when in battle, and akin to this in everyday life.

Bio: Born into a highly militarized tribe of humans outside the kingdom of Atlas, authority, conflict and combat have been part of Zheng Bing’s life since his very infanthood. His aura was unlocked as early as when he was half a year old, leading to some heart-wrenching panicking moments with his parents as he’d randomly solidify at all the wrong times… like when they were trying to escape from a deathstalker attack. Making him a prime target for disciplinary training.

To his clan chief’s immense surprise, this trouble-making child turned out to be less unruly than what his infanthood suggested. Sure, by the age of three, he accidentally tipped over a container of Schnee dust and started a great fire that ravaged thirty thatched roofs, but at the age of four, a good display of authority and some applied shouting made the kid stand up and salute like a well drilled soldier. This display highly intrigued the clan chief, who at the time thought it was the child’s own enthusiasm. Zheng Bing, then known as Zheng Xiaojian, wasn’t even sure where his enthusiasm came from, but thought it really was his. He took the military to heart.

From the early age of five, Zheng Xiaojian enrolled in the tribe’s fairly prestigious military elementary school, where he and the other children learned languages, math, polearm combat and military discipline. He was a great student, especially at the last one for reasons he had yet to comprehend. However, other kids soon picked up on his odd trait and decided to test the waters. The next year would be mild hell for him, as some of the more astute and older classmates he had taken the role of star student from began bullying him with senseless orders and making him their errand boy.

But it was then that he began to understand the inner conflict within him – his tendency to obey and work enthusiastically versus what he was beginning to feel was his true self. Early on, he begun to distinguish between these things – a distinction that would both help him make wiser decisions, and eternally haunt his inner being. He began to develop his ability to resist such orders at that age. He never did, his ability to resist being far too little compared to what it is now, but it set him on a track to be more independent, more under his own control.

It took two years of diligence and support from his friends, but by the age of seven, he was promoted above his former bullies in rank, and something clicked inside of him that allowed him to reverse the tide. No longer beneath them in most aspects of authority, he was able to stonewall their orders, and deliver his own brand of discipline in turn when they failed to follow his orders. A disciplined, regimented person by nature, his actions extended to everyone around him, making them model upcoming warriors for the village.

Thus it was with great pain for the chieftains of the village when they heard that Xiaojian had become enamored with the Atlesian military, and wished to transfer to the Atleasian military someday. Atlas was not an enemy - everyone was simply fighting the grimm, but to loose such talent and potential to the outside world was one of the most damning things of the tribes outside the kingdoms. At first, they thought to use their authority to intimidate him into at least reconsidering his dream, but when Xiaojian’s parents stood up in his support, the chiefs decided instead to let it be. Xiaojian was to be one of the many representatives of the tribe in the greater world of the kingdoms, and the only caveat they had him agree to was for him to promise to visit the tribe every so often.

During the migration ceremony, Zheng Xiaojian was given the new name that he wears to this day. No longer the righteous little halberd, he was the honourable soldier – Zheng Bing. He and his parents moved to Atlas, where he promptly discovered that Atlas had no sense of a military college for children. The closest there was would be Atlas’ hunter training school, and so he enrolled there, thinking that things would be similar. Hunters were just more lone wolf soldiers against the darkness of the grimm, right?

He learned the hard way, that as much as Atlas prides itself upon its superior military forces, it was a fool’s thought to believe that their hunter training programs would run the same way. Sure, they were far more disciplined and regimented than equivalent schools in Vale or Mistral, but ultimately, it was exceptionally loose. His entire tribe was a well drilled fascist state compared to the likes of the hunter school, and he was not used to the sheer number of decisions and freedoms he had to make for himself.

His different viewpoints, compounded with his lack of knowledge of anyone there and his often stiff-legged marching gait, made people wary of him. He in turn become more introverted, seeking guidance from within himself that just wasn’t there. It’d be a year before he’d get any real friends, and even then, he was usually the odd one out. Being odd, unique, or different to such a degree in ways other than excellence was something that was difficult for him to adjust too – despite there being examples of such all around him in the form of the other classmates to each other.

At Atlas’ hunter school, he learned to get better at fighting yes, but above all, his years there helped him broaden his horizon and understand new ways of thinking. He became more independent, and more self-motivated, ready to tackle on life’s challenges. Worries that he was distancing himself from his tribe with this kind of behavior was quashed when he saw his own father tackle a couple of White Fang thugs on the street – on his own courage, initiative and adaptation.

It wasn’t that such things were not of his tribe – they were. It was that he had left his tribe as a child, right before the time they start to learn such things. The kingdoms treated such knowledge as street-knowledge, while the tribe forged a new person out of the school system each time. Soul-searching, his father called it, was the theme of middle school in the tribe. It was more important that the child knew how to survive than it was for the child to be an individual outside the kingdoms, thus the order of teaching.

Encouraged, he started to adjust to life in the kingdoms far more quickly, developing more interests, preferences and tastes, but never forgetting his childhood dream of being a soldier. Rather, it slowly became more pliable, expanding into the armed forces in general… and then it slowly refocused upon being a huntsman in general. His tribe was militarized, but it was a survivalist militarization. Warfare between kingdoms consisted of people slaughtering each other – the Great Faunas Civil Rights War was as such as he learned, and that was a concept that he found to be distasteful. His tribe just had huntsmen and huntresses with military precision.

Still, as much as he remembered his tribe and visited it every summer break, Zheng Bing found himself wanting to expand his horizons even further. He was sixteen, nearly seventeen now. This was to be his last year at Atlas’ hunter school before he transferred to the final school where he’d be made into a true Atleasian huntsman. An Atleasian huntsman… or one of the world? He figured that as much as starting over would be difficult, and leaving behind his friends was going to be tough, Vale’s prestigious Beacon academy and their offer was what’d truly suit his path in life. He applied to Beacon.

And now here he was, once again a fish out of water, this time trying to fly. How will he fare? This is the start of this chapter in his life.

Weapon: A Chinese dagger-axe crossed with a recoilless 40mm gyrojet rifle that generally fires high explosive rounds.
Appearance: A thinner and smaller recoilless rifle that can extend into Chinese dagger-axe a full-scale Chinese dagger-axe.
Capabilities: The recoilless gun aspect allows him to rocket jump with the weapon, giving him the advanced mobility that he otherwise does not have much of. It can freely transform between polearm and recoilless gun mode, just as Ruby's weapon can. It is capable of firing in both modes, but is more dangerous in melee mode.
Other: None that I can think of at the moment.

Semblance: Terracotta warrior – he can selectively solidify parts or the whole of himself into a heavy, almost indestructible terracotta being. The terracotta form also seems to have increased gravitational attraction towards the ground, allowing him to solidify himself and plummet to Earth at a breathtaking pace. Unfortunately, it is not possible to feel from the senses in that state, and movement is laggy in that state, thus it’s used primarily a selective defense and full armored charge move, although rocket jumping is another option with solidification of his feet.

Did you read the rules: They were self-explanatory, yes.

Because while I am 80% sure Zwei is some android/alien/Grimm creature of indestructibility, you are not. Drinking mercury isn't silly, it's suicide. MAYBE if you can find more than 1 instance where a humanoid character (ie: not Zwei) does something that would certainly kill them, of their own volition, and not only ends up fine, but BETTER than they were before, I MIGHT consider it.

I... Completely forgot about that, somehow. I have a feeling a name change may soon be appearing.

Don't boot me out for this, but - recoil jumping (Ruby), full body rocket jumping (Yang), grenade jumping (Nora), drinking from the same thermos that launches rockets (Ooblek), rapid cyrogenic freezing (Weiss on the whole team), lighting herself on fire (Yang), jumping out of an airship that's very high in the air (Team COVY) and tanking hits from the enemy mech (Yang). All of these should result in a dead, red paste of a person IRL. It's a wonder that they aren't at times.

Well, Yang's the boss. Most of these are her. None of this is quite "better" than before, save for tanking hits and then one-shotting the mech, but having no damage and getting to where they want to go can be considered better in a tactical positioning/gamesense type of fashion.

In real life, taking moderate doses of poisons to cancel out other poisons, or to build up resistances to them, although I don't think this one counts.

Also, Zwei's just the standard dog on Remnant. They all have souls (except for the Grimm, who I believe are autowars, but that's another story).

1. Mercury is an element
2. It kills even in little doses
3. All living things have an aura on Remnant. "Aura is an ability that all those with a soul can use" -RWBY Wiki.

1. It is. Hg, if I remember correctly. it was known as quicksilver throughout history. It's seemingly magical properties meant that a lot of people used it throughout history, second only to lead. When Chinese alchemists found it IRL, they were convinced that it was a magical metal that could grant immortality. Qin Shihuangdi ate small doses of it for decades (mixed in and dissolved in something else, because mercury is difficult to have in pure form or something if I remember correctly). His tomb reportedly has "seas of liquid mercury", which translates to an obsession with the metal and its supposed lifespan properties. Recent soil studies near his tomb prove that yes - there is in fact a sea of liquid mercury in there. A gigantic swimming pool/lake of it. It's to this I want to reference to.

2. Eh, little is relative. I'll grant that it's a poison IRL though, and a particularly terrible one at that. Common results include paranoia, blindness, and insanity. It's potentially a reason why the latter Qin dynasty under his rule became such a despotic, brutal police state - more than it already was. Before, it was least a workable totalitarian vision that did bring Qin to the height of power against the other six states. After the start of the mercury, he slowly lost his sanity IRL.

3. Depends on if you consider the Grimm to be living or not. They seem to be living, but not possess auras. Of course, this is due to different definitions of living. Now souls, the grimm do not possess, which explains.

2. Oh no, you're not going to sap the fun from me. "Chronic exposure by inhalation, even at low concentrations in the range 0.7–42 μg/m3, has been shown in case control studies to cause effects such as tremors, impaired cognitive skills, and sleep disturbance in workers." The terrible, life crippling effects come first. The mental insanity, the mental impairment, the weakness of limbs, all before the death itself. It has the potential to be as terrible a killer as Sarin gas, so if I must take the route of "the Alchemists were wrong as they were", then I want to have a little fun.

3. That's what they're thought to be in the universe. Being a sci-fi fan, my first thought is that they're Biowars left behind by an ancient enemy to the ancient human empire that's meant to eliminate every last trace of humanity, but since the humans/faunas of remnant are different, the grimm have not succeeded. This is just my own pet theory anyways.
