Valentir wrote:This isn't historical but would anyone be interested?A long time ago in the land of Chrosos, there were three great kingdoms. Each kingdom ruled over vast swathes of territory, and shaped the lands they controlled. The greatest of the three kingdoms, Avalon, was ruled by a very ambitious man. He dreamed of an empire that would conquer the world. This man was Valemar, one of the most powerful mages in the world. Soon he set about on his quest, and one by one the other kingdoms soon fell to him. All of Chrosos was under his rule. Men, elves, dwarves, orcs, trolls, dryads, goblins, and many more races swore fealty to the great king. However his empire would soon be destroyed, as he turned into a corrupt tyrant. He went mad with power and began to exploit his people. He built great monuments and castles in honour of the Gods, and he set about on his most ambitious project of all. In the frozen wastes of the North he constructed the Spire, a massive tower that touched the heavens and the gods themselves. Here he focused his immense magical power to build huge palaces and change the very fabric of the world. He experimented with the creations of the gods, corrupting them, and forming dark mutations.
Valemar also built many great cities, the greatest would bear his name, Valemar, the Crown-Jewel of the North. He also created the Order of the Seven Magi, and together they constructed the Great Library in Tarkenburg, were vast amounts of books and scrolls, containing thousands of years worth of knowledge, was stored. By this time Valemar was in his 90's, and he felt death approaching him. He soon became obsessed with immortality. Within the Spire he began to experiment once more, taking the lives of thousands and further corrupting the fabric of this world. The other Magi became disgusted with his dark machinations, and plotted to overthrow Valemar. They went throughout the empire, rallying the peoples of Chrosos and assembling a large army. While Valemar remained blind to this betrayal, completely focused on his work, his empire collapsed. The provinces revolted and new kingdoms began to form. War engulfed Chrosos, and hundreds of thousands would die. Meanwhile the Magi and their army of 100,000 marched deep into the frozen wastes. When they reached the Spire they found it empty. The dark creatures and servants of Valemar were gone, having mostly likely fled. The magi entered the central chamber, the source of the Spire's power. There Valemar was casting a great spell. Beams of blue light pierced the walls. The Magi attempted to stop him, but it was too late. Valemar went up in flames, magical energy seeping from the Spire. In a great flash of blue light a the sky turned dark, and the ice around the Spire began to break. The Great Army drowned as they attempted to flee. The Spire started to collapse, and with one final burst of concentrated magical energy, it was destroyed. Valemar and the Magi were dead, the empire destroyed, the Spire and its power gone. The world fell into chaos as mortals began to fight for power, wealth, and land. This was nearly one thousand years ago, and the world has changed since then, but the dark stains of the empire can never be washed away.
