You're right, it isn't logic. I didn't say it necessarily was. You aren't wrong, of course. It's just that in the hypothetical situation in which you were wrong and I wasn't, then that's what would happen.

To be descended from the Romans is to be genetically related. There's definitely Latin influences, but it is doubtful that they were transformed into and Italic people entirely. Spain is almost certainly the only place for such a thing to happen in the shift from Basque-Iberians to Latins.

And if you want to talk assimilation, many elements of Romanian folklore and mythology are not found elsewhere, and the people themselves follow a generally Slavic culture. Only their language would appear to retain any hint of Latin culture.
