Si, but the Spanish can intervene to protect their own interests (aka, not having lolhuge Russian aleyska all along their northern border), and that might be enough for the Spanish to win some concessions in exchange for not opposing/fighting the Texas annexation/absorption.

Brief Description of your Economy: Venice's economy is how it has always been; trade-based. The Venetian Merchant Navy is one of the world's largest, and as such Venice benefits greatly from it. However, there is also a small agricultural sector, based mainly around wheat or grapes and the resulting wine which is exported wherever there is demand.
Goals: Acquire Genoa's non-Italian colonies. Establish more trading posts on the way to and from the Far East. Ensure that house Angelos lasts as rulers of somewhere for the next thousand years.
History: History diverges in 1204, in the Fourth Crusade; Alexios IV Angelos makes a deal with the Crusaders that they will be granted all of the Byzantine Empire's territory in Asia Minor in place of the previously promised aid, but the debt to the Venetians will still be repaid. The crusaders agree, and as such prevent his deposition by Alexios Doukas, who instead flees to Thrace and proclaims the Kingdom of Thrace. Alexios, with the support of the crusaders, is able to take control over Constantinople and the surrounding lands, but no more.

The crusaders are successful in their conquest of Asia Minor by 1214, and turn back to Alexios to repay their debt to Venice. Unable to do so, Alexios is forced by the Venetians to cede Constantinople to Venice, with Alexios as it's ruler under the Doge of Venice.

From there, the Republic expanded into Italy, taking over land around Venice and Istria, and expanding it's Dalmatian possessions. It annexed the Kingdom of Cyprus in 1338, after agreeing to void the Kingdom and the ruler's debt to the Republic following a war against the Seljuks.

Venice remained at peace for most of the 1400s and 1500s, expanding it's trade network further and allowing the house of Angelos to slowly but surely establish it's control over the Venetian political system.

During the 1600s, Venice established the colonies of Nuovo Venezia (Berumuda), Nuovo Creta (Jamaica) and Nuovo Cipro (Venetian West Africa), before expanding to the Isole des Angelos (Andaman/Nicobar Islands) in the 1700s.
