Also reparations. I want some of them, they won't be super harsh, or really enforced, but I want them on paper. Basically, we will demand an initial payment of whatever and that's all we will make you pay us. We won't make you pay what else is on paper after that, but we need it on paper for morale so we can say "Look what we did to these assholes we made them pay for being assholes yay us."

Well yeah, but look at Canada with BC, they were just like "Oh hey we have people on the other coast, and imperialist americans south of us, better build a railroad and stop them from going north"...

Anyway, with Manifest Destiny it was the belief that they were destined to rule the land, if both sides held that, and you factored in that they were basically the same ethnic group then that would likely justify the whole "border" thing.
