Actually I'm not sure how a third world war is going to play out without China serving as an aggressor in the East, its probably a better OPFOR than Russia is.

Well, I'll give Sankaku an opening in IC if he needs it, but that was never my desired outcome. The PRC can always do a Siberian land-grab given Russian disarray. Or, the North Koreans can be involved somehow. Or, Pakistan and India could be themselves. Or, some rogue actor can pop off a WMD somewhere and everyone just loses it. Or, Arctic melt is accelerated somehow and there's a gold rush up there and all bets (and old alliances i.e., NATO) are off.

Basically, WW3 would be a grouping of localized brushfire conflicts, instead of one massive side A vs side B type of conflagration. That's how I imagine it happening, if ever, anyway.

Just a note to the Taiwan player, the People's Republic of China still wouldn't agree to an independent Taiwan. They claim it as their own territory, so claiming the "Republic of Taiwan" as successor state to the RoC would be like succession from the PRC. Which nobody enjoys There's really no way for Taiwan to get on China's good side unless they just give in.

I'm aware of this. The calculus is that the turmoil around the world and within China gives Taiwan a window of opportunity that they feel is closing. The original plan before I started in the IC was 1) build a regional coalition, 2) test the waters with a popular and public referendum, and 3) declare independence with no claims concessions once Japanese, American, Australian etc. support was solid.

The original plan then ran into the reality that the American government almost ceased to exist - but now a young maverick Republican has been emergency sworn in, Abe seemed really keen on taking China on on the world stage, and everyone else's leaders in almost every continent all seem to be getting splatted. Oh and Taiwan's estranged almost superpower cousin/neighbor now seems to be under the control of...someone. All within in a week. By the very way the IC folded, the status quo is dead.

I'd call it a rash action for rash times.

Yes. Although I think we'll enjoy it regardless of what happens. The Taiwanese know they won't survive an all-out brawl or unrestricted conflict. Their only shot in their view, is providing electoral democracies around the world the "moral high-ground" to step in to avoid annihilation.

No, that'd be rejected outright and wouldn't be realistic. We're going to petition for entry / consideration into the International Partnership Cooperation program.

If anything we would be in years from now, unless there is a global cataclysm well after Australia, ROK, NZ, Thailand, Colombia, Israel, etc.
