Hours earlier...

On the outskirts of Devil's Sunset, there was an old, supposedly abandoned building, three stories tall, looking run-down on the outside, but quite well-kept on the inside... If one could even make it inside, that is. For, you see, this place was, in fact, the hideout of a dangerous group of outlaws, who just so happened to have some connections with the local law enforcement, which ensured that they could do as they pleased, within reason, without facing the consequences, and in exchange, if the lawkeepers needed something shady done to any political enemies and such, the outlaws would carry out the job ruthlessly. It was quite the agreement, a win-win situation so to speak. The other unlawful groups nearby let them be on the grounds that they usually stayed out of each other's way, not to mention that they had the law backing them, and last, but not least, it would be a foolish endeavor to try to take them down in their home turf.

But, it just so happened that these outlaws had stolen something from a certain keeper of a saloon inside the town of Devil's Sunset, something that the man was willing to pay a hefty ammount to get back, though, due to many factors including those mentioned above, the sad truth was that no one was willing to undertake this endeavor and get back the man's possession.

None except the craziest of them all.

And this is how Harlan Sheridan Redwing, former soldier of the Grand Unified Dominion of the Triangulum, trained entertainer, daring outlaw and leader of a band, found himself being pursued through the graffiti-stained silvery gray halls of the Granger hideout by no less than a dozen dangerously armed men, the leader of them a dark-skinned, scarred bald man with tattoos lining his muscular arms and his naked chest. And yet, somehow the figure that they were chasing through the hallways, clad in an archaic, ornamental black and gold uniform from a distant land, still managed to tower over every single one of them. Men born in Calico, such as the Grangers, they were not very tall. Oh, but the men of Tangent? The men of Tangent were something to behold. Called 'charge leaders' by their dubious overlords and 'walking targets' by their headwear enthusiast enemies, they were, indeed, rather easy to shoot, on account of their height. Of course, this was purely poetic, as they were not tall to the point of being inhuman, but the point got across, that much was certain.

It was in part this that made his escapades during his time as a soldier all the more impressive. How do you hide a walking tower?

As it turned out, the Grangers were about to find out.

Reaching the third floor of the building, Harlan turned a corner, only to find himself faced with a dead end, the only possible method of escape being a window nearby, though a quick glance showed that there wasn't a lot of cover nearby in that direction, and he did not like the odds of survival offered by that option, which involved a dozen men firing at him as he tried to run away.

Of course, the idea of getting shot by a dozen men at point blank range was not very appealing either, a thought that immediately popped up in the mind of the man of Tangent as he turned around only to see the Grangers standing there, their guns all trained on him. Letting out a defeated sigh and smiling a rueful smile, Harlan raised his hands.

But this was not an act of submission.

From his sleeves, playing cards began to fly out and fall in front of him with such frequency that they soon formed a barrier, blocking the Grangers' line of sight. Of course, they could always shoot, and odds were they'd get him, but delivering him dead wouldn't get him as much cash as delivering him alive, after all, which they had been planning on doing once they caught him.

Regardless, they didn't have a lot of time to react, either, as suddenly something passed through the veil of cards. It was a small, cylindrical stick-like object, an object that the men of Calico had learned to fear. Explosives in the area had for some reason evolved to take that kind of shape, some even painting them red, perhaps as a way to leave it clear that these were no toys. This one, however, was a gray one, but it was something to be feared nonetheless.

"Explosive!" Someone shouted, the only other sound in the room being that of something breaking the window. It didn't take the Grangers long to put two and two together, but before chasing their target, they all took cover behind the furniture around the room. These explosives were not usually very powerful, not because they couldn't be, but because some people preferred to avoid too much collateral damage.

But instead of exploding, the cylinder merely began expeding smoke very quickly. It filled the chamber within seconds, and the second and third floor within minutes, despite the open window. Inside the hideout, chaos ensued with great swiftness.

Not long after that, Harlan calmly walked out the front door while whistling a tune to himself and toying around with his deck of playing cards, his footsteps making not a sound, a useful skill he had learned during his youth. He walked up to a vehicle in front of the building, boarding it swiftly, putting his deck away and swiping a keycard on its panel, a neat little thing he had scooped up on his way out. It had not been particularly difficult to do, with the Grangers so confused. Really, they should have expected this, but for all their cunning while dealing with the unlawful world, they really had thick heads for facing cheap tricks based on smoke and mirrors. Regardless, the vehicle was all his now, another count of vehicle theft, perhaps, but he didn't really care, and instead of worrying about such trivial matters, he began singing an old, very old song.

"There's a man goin' 'round takin' names.
An' he decides who to free and who to blame."

And so the man drove off, away from that place, his work there done. A quick glance at his pocket clock indicated that it was almost time for him to meet his crew. He had asked them to meet him in a certain place that day, wanting to share something with them. A message he had received not too long ago.

"...When the man comes around."

Now...

Sunset Cross. A fitting name indeed for one of the most popular watering holes in Devil's Sunset, and one that happened to be near the center of the city. Of course, that wasn't on Trenton Cliff I's mind when he established the local. In fact, he was a very religious man, the echoes of monotheistic religions from the ancient world of Earth following him to Calico all the way from Andromeda. The town's name was something revolting for him, so he wanted to build something that would give travelers some respite from the atmosphere summoned by such a thing, but he was well aware that a church would not be very welcome this far from home, so he settled for what was, in his mind, the next best thing.

The knowledge of this foolish symbolism had for the most part faded away. Even the irony was lost by now.

From outside, the locale was fairly unassuming. An edification made of the same metal used to build every other locale nearby, painted with the same wood theme that seemed to be oh so popular around these places. A small porch of the same material and colors stood between the streets and the doors of the building, a sign hanging from it, the words "Sunset Cross" visible on it.

From the streets, a man in a black and gold uniform approached walking, having pawned off the vehicle for a little extra cash before heading there. He did not particularly need it at the moment, but letting the Grangers track it down to Sunset Cross was going to cause problems, he could tell. But that was no longer his concern, so, still whistling merrily, the man from Tangent walked through the porch, past the doors and into the saloon, casually ripping off a wanted sign with his face on it on his way in. The sign gave a small summary of his abilities and his (known) crimes, though of course it said nothing about his origins or his status as a renegade. Nope. Not at all. Why would it? No one knew about that here, as far as the Central Government of Calico was concerned.

"Harlan, stop ripping off the signs! They pay me to let them put them there!" Chided a man behind the counter, a good deal older than Redwing. He was dressed in a plain white shirt with a black vest over it, thin gray hair neatly combed back and an equally gray moustache gracing his face.

"In which case you should thank me, Cliff. They'll keep paying you this way." Harlan said nonchalantly, looking at the sign as he pulled out a red marker from one of his pockets, taking a seat at the bar, leaning on it and facing the door. He began scribbling on the sign with his red marker while Trenton Cliff the Third mused on his words. It was true, actually, and who would blame good old Cliff for not trying to stop a man who was about twice his height?

"So, what about that thing I asked you to do, eh, Redwing?" The keeper asked, grabbing a glass... glass from under the counter, and beginning to clean it up with a piece of cloth. Strictly speaking, that was unnecessary, given that the space under the counter cleaned the glasses automatically, but old habits were hard to let go.

"Hmm? Oh, yes, of course." Harlan said, putting a now fully vandalized wanted poster on the counter and grabbing something from one of his many pockets. It was a small card, which he tossed at Cliff. "Here's your deeds. Hide them better next time." The former soldier advised with a small nod, before glancing at the doors. No one there yet.

"Wonderful! Here, take this. It's on the house." Trenton repllied, grabbing a small hose from a larger contraption mounted on the wall and pressing a few buttons on said machine. The glass he had been cleaning, now filled with a reddish liquid, was handed to Harlan, who graciously accepted it and tasted it, nodding appreciatively. "You sure have learned my tastes by now." He stated.

Afterwards, he placed the drink on the counter and checked his pocket clock once again. The contraption showed him the local time, and also had a handy counter which showed him how much time was left until the next scheduled event. It was not a function he used very often, but he had chosen to use it for this meeting, and a quick glance confirmed his suspicions: He was a few minutes early. Shrugging, he placed the artifact back in its respective pocket and leaned back on the counter once again, crossing one leg over the other and waiting for his fellow outlaws to arrive.

M'toc Liquin, or "Toc" as he had come to be known among the current bandit group, had been sitting on the roof of the saloon that the boss had described earlier in his request to gather. Of course, even if it WAS a request, you didn't ignore it. Such things tended to rub him the wrong way and, given the man's stature and deeds in the past, doing so was a bad idea. Toc had been sunning himself in his feral form when Redwing had strolled over. He gave a large canine yawn, showing off his impressive set of fangs to those who might be looking, before getting up and leaping to the ground.

Lycaonic Dogs, while not especially common, tended to be a rather mundane sight in Devil's Sunset. There was a tribe of them living nearby and every so often their scouts would pass through in search of specific commodities not found in the wilderness. Of course, Toc wasn't a part of the tribe. He, unlike them, lived in the town itself and made a living as part of the Redwing Band. He carried out mundane jobs, of course; message carrying, scouting, and guard duties, but he was also a leading expert in the field of hunting. And what's more, hunting humans was a specialty of his.

Toc entered the saloon on all fours, not bothering to shift shapes into something a little more accommodating to speech. Not that he was planning on speaking anyway, of course. Having checked in with the bartenders and paid him in advance before resting on his perch, Toc found a bowl of spirits mixed with meats resting on the floor. He looked at Harlan with a canine grin on his face, panting from the day's heat before meandering over to the bowl and beginning to eat.

Sezarr
Sunset Cross

Sezarr marched into Sunset Cross with a grim expression that seemed entirely unsuited to him. The little Amiiri exile was built like a bird, with fine bones, and barely touched four feet tall. His smooth brown skin and rich gold eyes were only added to by his clothing- his usual rather flamboyant garb, though today he'd toned it down a little. He was wearing an indigo silk shirt, with fancy slashed sleeves and elaborate golden patterning, and unusually plain adaptive fabric pants that appeared somewhat like grey denim.
He'd been sitting in his tiny shack of a house, drinking and surfing the intergalactic nets for news of home, when Redwing's request had popped up. So he'd put on some clothes- clothes that were actually practical and slightly less conspicuous than how he normally preferred to dress- grabbed his knives, some money, and headed out to the bar on his tiny motor scooter. The little Amiiri still didn't really know what he was to do here, but he was getting some money all the same. Sure, he'd stabbed a person or two and rigged some card games, but so far he hadn't seen much action.

And frankly, he thought to himself, he was fine with that. Devil's Sunset was not exactly an area where many of the things he knew how to do well really applied. Exotic poisons and expensive parties were few and far between anywhere on Calico, and he already knew there weren't many people to con out of their money- since no one had any meaningful amounts out here. Nor was there much political maneuvering to do in a tiny desert town at the edge of the universe.

Sezarr hopped up on a stool near Toc and Redwing, and proceeded to order an unhealthy quantity of alcohol. He could, thanks to his medical nanites, take quite a lot at once, but the amount of tequila he'd ordered would be sufficient to get him nice and drunk.
Oh well. It's not like I've got something better to do, and I can count cards and stab people drunk. If Redwing doesn't want me to drink so much he's welcome to share it around, I suppose.

Azure makes his way to Sunset Cross, yawning. He had just woken up after a long night, and was still a bit sleepy. All he was wearing was a pair of black denim trousers, showing his broad chest and stomach, blue tribal markings around his body. It was his usual attire, and even this much only for the sake of other species norms. He looked down at his watch, nodding, seeing he wasn't late as he entered the building, yawning.

The reason he had been up so late was because he was tinkering with a bunch of objects that he had come across. He was modifying someones drag car to go past its set speed limit for some extra cash as well as his own laser gun to make it dual shooting, while hacking into his holo-watch in an attempt to get it to also map geography, all the while having to entertain his prostitute, who he thought was much to expensive for the service he provided.

He nodded to Redwing, Liquin, and Azad, before making his way to the counter, declining anything the bartender was offering with a firm shake of his head. He didn't like alcohol, as last time he had it he found himself in a catatonic state for four days due to his natural reaction too it. He never thought he would ever be in that state, as he always ended up putting people in that state.

In the end, he took off his watch, took out his little tool set from his back pocket, and starts tinkering with the coding of his watch via an external code breaker he personally made. He will get that mapping ability done.

Wesley Logan pulled up to Sunset Cross on a motorbike, his coat jacket flapping in the wind behind him. Parking it, he headed over to the saloon. He stepped up onto the porch, walking over to a dusty window and examining his reflection. Logan stood tall and muscular, and his dark hair was a mess on his head - even more so than usual. He combed his fingers through his hair, brushed some dust off the coat, and adjusted his belt.

Ignoring his reflection, he looked through the glass inside. It looked like Harlan had already arrived, accompanied by some others. He snorted. He was constantly asking himself what he was doing with companions like these. Logan liked Harlan well enough, and tolerated most of the others, but he didn't have the patience for everyone at once. He would rather be alone or on a job.

Logan pulled a cigar out of his coat and lit it as he stepped inside, blowing smoke as he headed over to the counter. He stood over by Azure, where at least he wouldn't worry about small talk while they awaited the rest. Logan chewed on the cigar while he awaited the others.

S.L. Johnson
Devil's Sunset, Calico
The Dusty Road Galaxy

He'd been waiting for a few good hours, slamming the small plastic ball into the side of the wall over and over again letting it fly back as the rubber within took the shock of the impact and exerted it back equally leading to a almost non-stop motion occurring. Thump thump thump on and on he went until he heard a voice below him and a grin spread across his face as he recognized the voice of the old man finally getting back from one of his "adventures". Swinging his legs over the edge of the bed, forgetting about the ball which for a moment had been in transit and suddenly hit him square in the side of his head, he cast it a dark look thinking terrible thoughts about it within his mind before giving up on trying to decide whether to try and break it or not out of anger. However, his excitement that his long-time mentor and respectively someone he saw as a better father than his own had ever been got the better of him and he sprang up from the bed and stumbled across the room, his bare feet slamming into the boards underfoot and walking out of the steel sliding door, letting it slip shut behind him, he proceeded to the right towards the lift which would take him to the saloon level. He stayed and worked and paid rent for the room above the bar in exchange for, well, having access to his own private room, and he enjoyed that little bit of privacy and individuality. Then there was also the fact that it was the only room in the entire place that sat in the low-gravity well pull of the repulsor-lifts keeping some of the furniture suspended in air. It was a strange anomaly, but one he appreciated being not a fan of actual density gravitational pulls.

As he stood waiting for the lift to get up to him, Samuel looked around towards the other rooms currently present and then suddenly the chain-link door slid up and open and he embarked upon yet another journey down to the ground floor, and he felt the gravitational field of Calico start to grab hold of him again and he sighed sadly as his light-weight figure and bones began to strain slightly. They were still strong enough to withstand life on Calico, but it was an enormous strain on his muscles, which fortunately for him, were already well-developed having the proper blood of the Cereans mixed in to allow for such discrepancies. Then there was his lack of a set center of balance, so he had ot often be aided on the ground by two small bands of some sort of mineral that could help even him out. Some called it a placebo, but he knew they worked and often he felt odd whenever one held them close to his head, probably due to some magnetic pull or anomaly within the rocks that must have been the whole reason why the bands helped him.

Stepping off of the elevator as he entered, it was obvious he was still rather young, twenty in spite o fthe 100+ year lifespan a Human could reach, but fortunately for him, Cerean's could keep growing well into their thirties, so he had no worries as he enterred the bar, a rather small and short 5 foot and 8 inches tall. He quickly found Harlan, and walking up to the man, he spread his arms to embrace him," Cardinal! (his pet nickname for Redwing for reasons he knew of, apparently there was a bird rumoured to have been at Humanity's birthplace called the Cardinal and it had a Redwing, thus the nickname)It's good to see you back man! How did it go, did they almost get ya? What'd you use this time, I know they almost had ya, you have that look..."

The boy's words tumbled out of his mouth as he spoke, his voice revealing his surprise and excitement at having Redwing back so soon, but he wasn't disheartened at all by the sudden return, ideally it mean he was either getting paid, about to get paid, or about to be sent on a job, which in return, would lead to him getting paid. It didn't hurt though if none of those were the case that Sam looked at Redwing as he would have any respectable father figure in his life, which surprisingly enough were two words most others would never have associated with the man, and seeing him as a father-figure, he didn't have to have a job to actually have a presence in the bar, but generally that's what his presence heralded so he never let his guard down around the man.

Cyriouse 'Knives' Del'ior,
In orbit of Calico

Cyriouse looked down onto the world of Calico. He had just finished several off world jobs and now he was sad that he was going back to the backwater hellhole . Though he would be glad to be able to meet his fellow Redwing Band members. They were a odd bunch but they were good friends nonetheless. He felt the shuttle break into Calico's atmosphere. It was going to be several months again before the would see the beautiful dark expanse of space. He had to find Harlan Redwing once he hit groundside.

Several Hours Later
Devils Sunset, Sunset Cross Tavern

Once Cyriouse had landed in the old Calico Space Port, he quickly ran and found his hidden Jetbike and drove as fast as his bile could be pushed to. He had important news to tell Harlan. As he sped through the trails to Devils Sunset. He had hoped that Harlan was not indisposed of at the moment and was drinking in the Sunset Cross Tavern.
By the time he made it to the tavern, it was already dark and the streets were near empty. He got off his bike and immediately ran rushed into the Tavern, not even bothering to clean off the dust frlm his jacket. Cyriouse was relieved when he entered the bar and immediately saw Harlan by the bar counter. He calmed himself and sat next to Harlan, ordering a Fox Blood, a Als'honi Whisky capable of killing a human if consumed too much. Cyriouse sipped on the drink and then talked to his leader.
"Harlan, I bring bad news. From Smuggler's Belt. Finish your drink my friend and we must talk about this in private. What I am to tell you are not for the ears of everyone." Cyriouse said while he looked over his shoulder. He hoped that Harlan did not react too rashly once he heard of his news.

(OOC: Smuggler's Belt is a system full of astroids and a single dwarf planet about a dozen or so systems away from Calico. Its single planet and astroids surrounding it are a smugglers haven.)

Howard Theofrost
Sunset Cross

Theo always ran 2 laps around Devil's Sunset every morning, it was more of a jog, but he preferred to call it running. He may be 86, but he was spry for his age, and for some reason he never broke a sweat while doing his exercises. Theo jogged to a stop outside the local watering hole, Sunset Cross, and was relieved to see that he was not late for the meeting that Harlan had called for some time ago. He inhaled deeply and felt himself cooling down. He could feel a slight breeze washing over him and heard the bar sign creaking in the wind. Theo unsheathed his weaponized cane and leaned slightly upon it. Putting on his top hat and monocle, he strolled into the bar. Looking around the room, hee could see a few of his fellow outlaws already sitting or standing around Harlan. He strode over to Toc and sat down next to him, without disturbing his meal. Theo has always been quiet unless he was need to create a distraction and decided to remain silent until Harlan spoke to the group.

All of a sudden, the doors of the tavern slammed open and Knives ran in. Theo regarded him silently as Knives ordered a drink and spoke hurriedly to Harlan. Really, what does he mean by 'not for the ears of everyone', are there traitors in our band? Such distrust.

Doc had been studying an Anatomy and Physiology textbook on his touchpad, one of many he had downloaded in an attempt to better understand how to treat the different species which comprised the Redwing Band, when the message from Harlan came in to meet up at the Sunset Cross. After letting out a lengthy sigh, he turned off the touchpad and set it down on his desk. Figuring he'd better go prepared, he opened up the footlocker in which he kept his weapons, a phase pistol and particle rifle he had used in the military and purchased once he left, put on a shoulder holster and slapped the pistol inside. He then put on a heavily worn blazer, concealing the pistol, grabbed the touchpad off his desk and put it in one of the jacket's pockets, grabbed his medical bag and headed out towards the saloon.

Once he arrived, he walked over to the counter where Harlan was standing, shooting Logan an angry stare on the way. Smoking was one of his pet-peeves, and he always tried to keep the members of the Band from partaking in the unhealthy habit. He put his medical bag down on the counter, then leaned back and waited for Harlan to speak.

Machita Sakunberg calmly walked into the Sunset Cross, clothes freshly washed and hair neatly brushed. Some of Calico's dust had already gotten on it, of course, but the Kitsunese woman still looked a good deal more tidy than a lot of the people on this planet. She sat down at the bar where the others were gathering, and the bartender knew to slide her glass of limeade over.

"Hello again, Mr. Redwing," said Machita, giving a respectful nod. Her violet eyes surveyed the room, taking note that a lot of the band was already here. Her tail swished in the air a few times as she sipped her drink and waited for the rest of her comrades to arrive.

"You couldn't leave well enough alone, could you?"

No response.

Leaning back against the bare metal frame of what used to be a perfectly operational dune buggy a decade ago, Markus took a drag from his cigarette, perfectly comfortable with sitting in the middle nowhere - then again, most of this planet was just that, so it didn't make much of a difference where he sat. His eyes briefly peered at the man nearby, faced-down in the dirt. He hadn't moved a muscle since he landed there, but that wasn't any of Markus' concerns. Life's too short for that, especially around there parts. With laboured grunting, the ex - or rather - "bounty-hunter-on-hiatus" got back on his feet and wiped some dirt off his trousers before he walked over to the unconscious man and gave him a gentle nudge with the tip of his boot.

No response.

With a bit more force this time, Markus gave the man a push to roll him over. He was covered in dust and grime, some of having been there much longer than one day. The entire picture had 'scruffy' written all over it. Slowly Markus knelt down and gave the man a gentle tap on the cheek.

Still no response.

After a not-so-gentle tap, the man finally opened his eyes, a bit dazzled by the sunlight and the beating he got not too long ago. Sore and bruised in more ways than one, he lifted his head and looked at the man kneeling next to him, squinting his eyes before sighing audibly as he realised it was the very same man that got him in that position.

"You fuck." He muttered as he lowered his head again and looked at the sky above. All Markus could hear was some inaudible gurgling.

"Take it easy." Markus replied, reaching into the inner coat pocket of his duster and pulling out a pack of cigarettes. Gently and with some co-operation from his 'friend', he put a cigarette between the man's lips and pulled out a lighter after returning his pack back to their rightful place. He lit the flame long enough for the cigarette to light up before snuffing the flame.

"I think you'll understand when I say I never want to see your mug again. Got it?" Markus continued while he walked towards the damaged dune buggy, sighing as one of the wheels spontaneously fell off before he'd even touched it.

"...and I'm taking your ride."

The man grunted, presumably in protest.

"Cheers."

Markus walked to the only other vehicle in a radius of several kilometres. It was probably going to be a drag to get to the nearest settlement and on a planet such as this one, dehydration was still a common cause-of-death. Wasn't any of his concerns, though.

Life's too short for that.

The dune buggy roared into action, this one in a much better state than Markus'. Before he drove off, he looked at the man as he tried to scramble onto his feet, and lifted his arm. Extending his index finger and raising his thumb like an imaginary handgun.

"Don't forget what I told you." He said before letting the scruffy man to his own devices, arriving in Devil's Sunset half an hour later, leaving the buggy outside as he went inside Sunset Cross. Despite technological advancements, dune buggies were still deemed as one of the most affordable and reliable ways of getting around on the surface of Calico. Granted, they were more beefed up and fuel-efficient than you'd expect, and Markus' newly acquired means of transportation seemed to have a few upgrades his old one lacked, which put him in a reasonably good mood.

His arrival announced by a cloud of smoke, Markus walked in and briefly looked around at the familiar faces before plotting his way straight to the counter.

"I dealt with that competition you were moaning about." Markus said with a coarse tone before making a gesture to Trenton to serve him his regular poison. He pulled out a poker chip from his pocket, which seemed like a pretty mundane object. Then again, in today's world is wasn't uncommon for there to be something beyond what the eye could perceive.

"Had this on him. Not a clue what it does." He explained as he passed it to Harlon while he took a long drag from his cigarette, tapping it once as a trail of smoulder travelled towards the ceiling. He exhaled a cloud of smoke before downing his drink and leaning with his back against the counter.

Azure yawned, rubbing his eye as he continued on his watch. He kept note of the beings who walked into the building in hi peripheral as he continued on his watch. Fully, he was attempting to make it scan a room they where in using passive sonic and infrared waves, then possibly tweak it a bit more to work along with a small drone to map out larger areas, inside buildings, and over terrain.

Suddenly, he grinned, baring his shining teeth, his larger canines prominent, as he quickly put away his coding tool. Luckily he was sitting near a wall, as he faced his watch to the rest of the room, and pressed a button. For him, it was a very long couple of seconds, not knowing if any waves were being sent out to collect back any data. He watched with glee has a holo-image showed up on his watch giving him a rather solid 3-D picture of the room.

Now, of course he could have just bought a mod to install instead of programming it himself, or simply a scanner that could probably do a better job then his watch, but opportunities for that low tech was even scarce on Calico, but he also jut wanted to test his hand at programming. Now, all he had to do was find a good, small, drone bot, link it with the watch, and voila, a mapper for old abandoned or not so abandoned buildings and hideouts.

Hours Prior…

Oh, mornings. Nero cherished them. Despite no green grass, no trees, and no condensation, mornings on Calico had a certain atmosphere. It had been a cool, but not humid heat, and the sun had just begun to come up across the dunes in the distance. Despite the mild temperature, the concept of morning comforted him. On this unpredictable planet, the sun rising during morning's first light had been one of the meager certainties of Calico. He sat on his perch in the stone outcrop, staring at that giant sphere of heat and radiation.

It seemed as if hours had passed, but as Nero glanced at his tactical pad mounted on his forearm, he could see it had just been a mere ten minutes. Standing up, he began scaling the ridge, and at last set boots on the dusted ground. He turned to and fro, determining if he had been seen. He had quite a bit of enemies. But, no one could be certain of his location: not his associates, friends, or Harlan, his best friend. This single spot had been his harborage, his oasis in a desert- in both the metaphorical and literal sense.

He ambled to his transport, sitting on the torn but still a pinch ergonomic seat, and turned the ignition. Despite most machines being electric in these current times, this relic used a combustion engine. It roared as if to state it still had some life left in it, and lifted off the ground. He pressed the gas and he shot off into the sands, heading to the lights off in the distance.

Current Time…

Nero entered the settlement, some people shooting him glares of disgust, others just curious. He set a much more gradual speed and cruised through the sand paths that passed for streets. Turning a sharp corner, he stopped in front of the Sunset Cross. The joint happened to be one of, if not the most, popular bars in the suburb. He teared out the metal primer from the ignition and slid it into one of his numerous belt pouches. Continuing to the doors of the Sunset, he pushed them open and let the plethora of scents and odors pass through his helmet's filters and into his nostrils.

He smelled the familiar aromas of liquor and different spirits, and then the foul stench of bile and bad breath. Though, the latter came from the multitude of patrons that inhabited the pub, not Trenton. Nero couldn't quite describe Trenton. The man a respectable business (for the most part), and that didn't happen to be common in these parts. But on the other hand, he could be ruthless if someone pissed on his plans. In a sense, Nero admired him.

Spotting Harlan and the rest of the gang at the counter, he approached them. He then began his usual process of greeting most of them, one of the scarce social pleasantries he participated in.

Nero patted Samuel on the shoulder, "Greetings, lad. Harlan being a hard ass and it's just noon? Should be a record."

He gestured to Logan, "Still on the path to self destruction, I see. Lung cancer's such a fad in these times."

He tilted his head to Machita, "Beautiful as always, Mach."

Then, for the last hello, he turned to his old friend and genuine pain in the ass, Harlan, "Oh, the last hardy-boy. Is there a reason for the entire lot of us being in the same room? The collective of hot air might start a fire, don't you think?"

As he sat as waited, soon enough Harlan saw the first of his associates walk through the doors leading into the establishment, drawing some curious gazes from those who were inside. Though it was common to see Lycaonic Dogs around Devil's Sunset, rarely did one of them walk into a saloon. Of course, Harlan himself was entirely unsurprised by this, as was Trenton himself. The former had been working with this one specimen for a while now, and the latter, often finding his locale to be the meeting grounds of the Redwing Band, had long since grown accustomed to the sight. Seeing the canine's grin, the man acknowledged his fellow outlaw with a nod, before continuing to look out the door.

It did not take very long for others to start arriving. Sezarr. Azure. Logan. He acknowledged them all with a casual nod much like he had with Toc, but none of them seemed to be in a very talkative mood for the time being, though he certainly couldn't blame Azure for it. Why a lad so skilled with machinery and technical matters had not yet invented some artifact that allowed him to speak freely, Redwing did not know, but it certainly didn't detract from the Descalzo's talents. Or his appeals, the man thought as he saw Logan take a seat next to Azure, smirking as he understood the reason. Logan was not the most sociable of men, after all.

The Amirii's rather sizeable order made both Harlan and Trenton raise their eyebrows, but the latter simply shrugged and got to work, not minding as long as he got paid, while the former simply thought that if his inebriation became a liability he could always leave the alien out of any given job.

Suddenly, from the corner of his eye, Harlan saw the elevator open and Samuel stepping out and into the bar. When the young lad hugged him, the man from Tangent allowed himself to smile, and ruffled the lad's hair affectionately, though he also exerted some pressure to push him away, however subtly. As much as he liked the appreciation of the effort he had put into essentially raising this boy that wasn't even his, and as much as he didn't particularly care that he wasn't seen as the quintessential criminal mastermind, the image of a kind father wasn't one he cared much to display.

"Alright, already." Harlan said to the comparatively short half-Cerean, finally managing to push him away. "One day, kid, I'll tell you the story of how a lone man, handsome and dashing, walked in and out of the Granger's hideout with nothing but a rock, a deck of cards and a smoke bomb." He said with a smirk, before glancing at the doorway yet again. "But not today, kid." He said, noticing Knives walking through the doors, seeming rather distraught for some reason the man from Tangent could not quite discern. The Als'hon sat down next to him, ordering a drink, and then spoke of bad news in an almost frantic manner. However, in response to this, Redwing merely chuckled.

"Calm yourself, Knives. Whatever it is that you're talking about, I'm sure that it isn't as bad as it seems, and to leave now after requesting everyone's presence would be unbecoming of myself." The man said. "Not to mention that fine drinks are meant to be enjoyed at one's leisure." He added afterwards, sipping his reddish drink as if to illustrate his point, before turning back to the doorway. Two more of his associates soon stepped through the door, Theo and the doctor. Their addition to the team was quite a welcome one, and though he had been especially skeptic on accepting the former, he hadn't come to regret his decision so far. The old man certainly had the element of surprise backing him up. The doctor, conversely, was a more than welcome addition. He only wished he'd had the help of someone with his qualifications four years ago... But now was not the time to think about such things.

"A pleasure to see you as always, miss Sakunberg." Harlan said, tipping his hat towards the Kitsunese. A charming woman, she was. In a way, that just made him feel sorry for her, stuck with a simple band of outlaws thanks to the twists of fate. But then, he always told himself, it was probably better that it was his band and not someone else's. He, at least, respected the manners taught to him back home, in the Triangulum. Sure, they weren't the good guys by any means, but their traditions were commendable in some cases, and during his upbringing, his family made a point of stressing that.

Not long after, another figure walked in, Markus. As the leader of a band of outlaws, it brought Harlan great amusement to find himself as the superior of a bounty hunter, something he constantly reminded himself of, relishing the irony. Of course, he was austere about it with the others, because there was little point in bragging about such things. Anyone could fall from grace at any given moment, after all. Everything was just a matter of riding Lady Fortune's curves and dodging her backhands. Catching the poker chip with his index and middle finger, Redwing shrugged. "This? Oh, it's nothing special, just my lucky chip." The man said, and smirked, before turning to the last arrival, Nero. Now there was a mystery, and yet, it wasn't one that the man of Tangent was particularly interested in solving, merely acknowledging the man, if he was even a man, with yet another nod.

"If a fire does indeed break out, my friend, I'll just have to put it out. Wouldn't be my fanciest magic trick." Harlan said with another shrug, before noting, with some satisfaction, that nearly everyone was here. He just needed to wait a bit more, and then he could talk to the whole band about the message he'd received.

Ziruus half-walked, half-dragged herself into Sunset Cross. She was dead tired, having chased a lead (that had turned out to be false) all night, and she was pissed about it. She was also dirty, and not just the 'smattering of dust' kind of dirty in films, but the 'collided with a mud bog' sort of dirty. Who knew the ground around Calico's oases could be so... fluid?

She dragged herself onto a bar stool with all the enthusiasm of a slug on krokodil. She slowly held up a finger, looked at it for several seconds, then turned her head to the bartender.

Machita smiled appreciatively as Harlan and Nero both greeted her. Even if she was in a band of outlaws, it was nice to have a bit of recognition and respect, something her previous jobs hadn't given her in the slightest. The Kitsunese maiden turned her attention to the doorway as another member of the band entered. Ziruus looked like she has been in some foul accident, and Machita swiftly began rooting around for something helpful. Miss Sakunberg soon found a handkerchief, and began wiping at the mud on the hyena girl.

After waiting for a bit more inside the Sunset Cross, Harlan noticed that Ziruus finally arrived, looking like she had been stepped on by a spider tortoise near an oasis or something. She certainly didn't look happy, or, for that matter, clean, though her drink got delivered rather swiftly nonetheless. The outlaw leader simply shrugged mentally at the sight, figuring that whatever she had been doing wasn't a concern, unless she contracted a disease from it or some such thing, but then, that was doubtful. Kroshkutans were a sturdy species, as far as he was concerned. The sight of Machita quickly rushing to try to clean her up was something quite amusing, though. Either way, and for storytelling purposes, let's pretend that, not long after that, Damon Falstaff arrived to the scene as well. Or perhaps, Karl did. It didn't matter. Either one worked for Harlan.

With the whole band present, the man from Tangent figured that it was about time to disclose why exactly he had called them all here. But, of course, he was not quite so careless as to speak of such matters in a saloon filled with strangers and, especially, other outlaws.

Fortunately that was hardly an impediment.

Discreetly, Harlan tossed a cylinder, much smaller than the one he had used in the Granger's hideout, in the direction of one of the doors leading further into the building. Smoke began emerging from it soon enough.

"FIRE!" He shouted. Within moments, the place was clear, and the only sound was that of a chuckling man, followed by a quite exasperated sigh.

"Are you insane?" Trenton asked. The old bartender had every right to be pissed off at the moment, but rather than that, he merely displayed a sort of weary frustration, as if he'd gone through this many times before. How it continued to work, then, was a question for the ages.

Harlan simply shrugged at the question. "Perhaps, perhaps. Who can be certain, with something so frail?" He answered. Trenton shook his head, irritated, and jumped over the counter, displaying a respectable level of agility.

"Just hurry up with whatever it is you're gonna talk about this time." He said. He would've told Harlan that he would have to compensate him, but by now he knew perfectly that the taller man would just point out that he'd recovered his property deeds on his behalf, and he preferred to spare himself that bit. Harlan was an useful guy to have around, for Trenton, but under the right conditions he could also be an asshole, he thought as he made his way out of the bar, picking up the small cylinder on his way out. Upon seeing him walk through the door, Harlan stood up and jumped over the counter, attempting to pour himself a drink, but soon enough he found, much to his dismay, that the machine was blocked. Shrugging, he put the hose aside and turned to face his companions.

"Alright folks, here's why I called you: I received a rather peculiar request, you see. It promises to pay quite generously, but it's an odd one. Now, I'm sure you've all heard of Mr. Ehrlichmann."

And indeed, they likely had. The story of Ambros Ehrlichmann was one often told in Devil's Sunset, especially to those who expressed a wish to explore the unknown, claiming that they were unhappy with their current situation. Ambros was a rich young man, son of a successful businessman, the head of one of the most powerful mining corporations to ever set foot upon Calico. And yet, despite this, Ambros was nothing like his father, calculating, proper, cautious. No, the young man was dashing and intrepid, they said, and knowledge-hungry, always wanting to know more, always wanting to see more. It was, thus, no surprise to anyone when, using his father's resources, he put together a crew and flew off the planet, towards the Unknown Universe. This, all of this, happened about fourteen or fifteen years ago, give or take a few. And then, two years later, he was the only one to return, on a battered ship that didn't so much land as it crashed upon a salt pan. The young man barely got out of that alive... But he was changed. He began talking about an approaching darkness, and of how they needed to begin preparing. He also spoke against the mining operations in the Southeastern continent of Calico, claiming that the Drillbillies were more important than was believed. Now, taking this into consideration, it was no surprise that he was soon labeled as a madman, someone driven insane by some accident beyond the reaches of the central powers. And, naturally, it was hurting his father's business. And so Ambros was threatened and told to be silent. He was given enough money to live comfortably and an estate overlooking Belgarde's Hollow, near Devil's Sunset, and he was forced to promise that he wouldn't keep on pestering anyone. Shamed, shunned and essentially exiled, Ambros Ehrlichmann retreated to his grim new home in Belgarde's Hollow, becoming an exceedingly rare sight outside of it.

"Well," Harlan continued. "He's giving us a job. He wants us to get into the Cyrus Corp. building not far from here and steal some stuff. Data. Codes. Plans. Not my job to ask questions, as you know, so that's that. That said, though, any questions?" Redwing inquired, his gaze slowly wandering over each and every one of his associates.

M'toc, having finished his meal, sat on his haunches and ignored the smokescreen, having caught the motion of the cylinder as it flew through the air. He sighed, knowing that while it was necessary, it was flashy and dramatic. Toc sat down on his haunches and waited for the smoke to clear, grinning and panting as the bartender jumped over the counter. He would make for good prey. he thought. As Harlan began his briefing, Toc's bones shifted and cracked quietly as his form flowed and misted slightly. After a few seconds, he stood on his rear two legs as the shift completed. He stood at an impressive height almost rivaling Harlan himself.

Toc reviewed his memory, recalling the stories in the news about the crazy human living in the private estate and chuckled quietly at the vision of the young man ranting and raving beforehand. When Redwing had finished speaking at long last, Toc spoke for the first time that day, his voice a sonorous bass, "What are the rules of engagement?"

After doing nothing but quietly smoking his cigar, with the exception of a scowl returned to the Doctor and a snort given to Nero, Logan was relieved to see Redwing toss the cylinder. It was about time things got started. He listened to what Harlan had to say and grunted, removing the cigar from his jaw with a puff of smoke.

"Ehrlichmann hired us? He'd better be paying well." Logan knew the man's story well enough, and the idea of getting into trouble for a loon didn't appeal to him all that much. Not that he expected trouble, but that didn't mean he was happy about it.

Theo quietly pondered. It was certainly unusual, the job itself is not uncommon, and yet what is it that Ambros Ehrlichmann needed from Cyrus Corp. But it was not his place to ask such a question.

Azure watched as the cylinder was thrown through a door and letting off smoke, and a wonderful idea came to his mind.Perhaps he could get it to release a heat wave as well, or holo-fire, to make it more real.

It was then that he listened up and hear the mission, happy to hear the name Ehrlichmann. He found his wanting of adventure, exploration, and discovery a good parallel to his own people.

He nodded as he heard the end. It wouldn't be that hard to crack into some computers and get the data they wanted. Just get him close enough to the their data-links, and voila, there we have it.

Doc watched as the bar patrons darted out the door after Harlan threw the smoke bomb, and shook his head. "I swear if I had a dollar for every time Harlan pulled that trick, I'd have opened my clinic by now." Doc thought to himself "Honestly, I can't believe anyone on this planet still falls for it." Once Harlan finished divulging his reason for calling everyone to the bar, Doc let out a brief sigh. "Another day, another robbery..." he thought. He didn't know much about the Ehrlichmanns, but he did know that they were one of the wealthiest families on Calico, so he was glad at least that they'd likely be getting a bigger paycheck for this job than most of the ones they'd had recently. Once a few of the others had asked their questions, Doc looked to Harlan and asked "What kind of security does the building in question have?"

Sunset Cross

Sezarr shook his head at the smoke bomb.
How do none of those idiots see him do it? And why do none of them have fire extinguishers? And why are they not... ah well. I'll never be able to understand why they all left. Might as well have some tequila.
He threw back another shot and glanced over as Redwing started talking.
Ehrlichmann... oh, right, the loony. Mmm. I should lay off the tequila... but I won't.
He threw back another shot, then frowned. Breaking into corporate buildings was rarely a good idea, so clearly Redwing had a plan.
"How are we getting in?," the little Amiiri said softly, though not so softly no one else could hear. "Breaking and entering, storming it, disguises..."
Hopefully it's not storming it, since I'm tiny and can't shoot to save my life with the guns they have here. This lot couldn't act like a corporate or an upper classer, so not disguises. Probably breaking and entering... but we could just hack it from a distance.
He had another shot of tequila as the others bombarded Redwing with questions, then looked at the rest of the shots lined up in front of him, still full, and decided to wait on them until he saw where this was going.

As the smoke began erupting from the canister, Markus sighed wistfully. Now he wasn't a big deal as a bounty hunter out there, but the lot he hung around with nowadays truly made him feel as if he had made a seriously long fall from grace. His depressed attitude was fleeting, though, as soon after he got up from his stool and found himself a more comfortable seat with a backrest, taking a small detour along the bar to pour himself another drink. Now, since Markus was a bounty hunter by nature and not a crook, he left appropriate compensation for the drink he served himself, a price he already learned by heart, one that was just right for the grog he got for it. During his prime he had enjoyed plenty of high-end liquor, causing his palate to become more accustomed to the finer kinds of alcohol, which totally ruined any experience of whatever they could serve him here.

With a sour expression he downed the drink, regardless of its taste. Though its taste wasn't something you'd want to write home about, alcohol was alcohol, and keeping his blood alcohol level at a perfect level was something he had honed during his time here. Drunk enough not to care, but not drunk enough to have any effect on his essential skills. If anything, a somewhat inebriated state dulled the pain in his leg.

Drugs were too expensive anyway.

Markus placed his glass on a table nearby, Leaning back in his chair. The wooden furniture groaned painfully under his weight, but managed to hold up thanks to modern treatment and production methods. Sure, it looked like an antique from back when Earth was still in the middle of its 1700s, but the thing would probably live to see the next turn of the century.

"Sure." Markus replied to Harlan's newest job proposal, his disinterested gaze trailing off to the ceiling as his head tilted back.

Rules of engagement. Now that, as far as Redwing was concerned, was an interesting question. Straightening up, the man clasped his hands behind his back, adopting a posture that hinted at some sort of military experience in the past. Not that the band knew about it, given that he hadn't bothered telling anyone, not wanting his connection with the Triangulum to pursue him this far. He was fairly certain that some, if not all of them, could make a few relatively accurate guesses at his past, perceptive as some of them were, but not much more than that. The bit about his military experience was an image that was convenient to feed, anyway. Finding oneself in front of an imposing bandit from Calico could possibly make a grown man run for the hills. But coming upon a gentleman bandit who has seen war itself transpire before him? Now that was a jackpot, figuratively speaking.

"Rules of engagement, you say? Well, those are quite simple." He said, raising one of his hands, balled into a fist, and then raising his index finger. "Try not to kill anyone you don't have to kill. We're stealing, not killing." He said. A small pause later, he raised his middle finger. "Try not to break anything you don't have to break. We're stealing, not wrecking." Ring finger. "Treat anyone you come upon with dignity. I can understand knocking someone out cold but please don't pee on them or anything." Pinky. "Use the minimum force necessary. We're stealing, not destroying." Thumb. "Defend yourselves. That's always important. We're stealing, not dying." He stated, balling his hand into a fist again. "Remember: We may be bandits, but we're also gentlemen. And ladies, I suppose." He concluded. They probably knew that this was how things worked already, and some were probably annoyed with it, but then, they wouldn't be here if they were that averse to his particular brand of lawlessness... Or if they had somewhere else to get a job, anyway.

"But anyway, yes, Logan, the pay will be substantial. Four thousand local credits to every collaborator. You'll notice that's a thousand more than my reward. You should feel flattered, that's a pretty penny." He said. Bullshit. Ambros promised five thousand, but Redwing liked to toy around with his crew. Not to mention his lies probably helped them with their cash management on some level, since they prepared to work with less than what they were getting. But it was mostly for the hell of it.

Hearing some more questions, he began pacing behind the counter. "Ah, yes, the data and the security. First of all, our client wants a specific set of codes, plans, data and such things regarding a specific project. It was called... Project Vulcan, I believe. He did not tell me much more about it, but again, it is not my job to ask questions." The man from Tangent explained "Now, security, yes. They'll have radars, probably, to identify any approaching crafts. Corporate security would most likely be armed guards. They'll most likely have those fancy stunrods as well. I'm not too concerned about them. The problem here would be that the server where they keep this data is isolated. We'll have to get to it before stealing anything." He explained. All in all, Cyrus Corp. wasn't a very big corporation, certainly not like the one run by Ambros' father. Why, then it interested the man in the first place, Redwing could not tell, but he supposed he would find out in due time, or at least, get paid.

"How do we get in? Well, breaking and entering would be the saner choice. Those of us who are competent with firearms could likely storm it, with some planning and such, but that would just cause a lot of collateral damage and make my reward skyrocket. I'd rather let the thick-headed idiots who put tens of thousands on their own heads and the corrupt authorities kill each other off without getting involved." The man shrugged at this point. "Theo or miss Sakunberg could probably opt for disguises and distract their security to some degree, but most of us would have to break in and do our thing separately."

The man from the Triangulum shrugged again. "Not going to lie, this could be dangerous. But then, that's how this business works." Redwing smiled.
