There will be tech that lets you smelt without polluting much, but it will use more energy.

I mean first contact is first contact. Also there are two races. The civilized ones and the not so lovely ones. I hope to trade with the civilized and either make a pact of leaving us alone and or trade mutually. I hope the area i am going to explore next has hydrocarbons so i can be self sustained.

To trade with the species would require them to be knowledge level 1( medieval/ Feudal) so they could interact properly.

Actually, nuclear reactors don't work in the discworld... at least not the ones tried so far.
That's why the colony center's aren't self-sufficient.
There may also be other sources of energy not yet discovered...
