We only use it in the cases where you can't do it with more simple maths.

For instance, you could bring it down to x^2 - 4x = 0. Well, not in the thing we're currently working on, but it'll do for the example. That is easily changed into x(x-4)=0, from which you can read that x=0 or x=4.
