Yeah but even with that, I mean I don't see (logically) why the HRE would keep the name after it centralized in a more modern day, especially since half of it is Protestant and half of it is Catholic.

It wouldn't have that religious divide. I'll explain in a history, but basically massive civil wars that weakened it immensely throughout the 1600/1700s, after which Napoleon strolled in during the beginning of the Napoleonic wars, and the Empire was held together only by the personality of the Emperor at the time, who managed to eventually defeat and drive Napoleon away, restoring the borders of the HRE as closely as possible. The following century and a half would have seen centralizing, conversion efforts, etc, leading to a diminished Catholic tiny-minority and an overwhelming Protestant majority.

Or, if I want, I can just make the POD pre-Luther, and never have Protestantism spread to Germany. *shrugs*

The Protestant nations, that is.

Not the issue.

The issue is that these nations, initially, made many alliances and marriages based on religion or religious leanings. With a HRE embroiled in Protestant/Catholic rivalries, and large numbers of Protestant nobles in the HRE, as well as Protestants in France/Netherlands, nations could split away from the Pope and be welcomed with open arms by their predecessors.

With a Catholic HRE, and presumably a staunchly Catholic France, and the ever-loyal Spanish Catholics, you get almost all of Europe solidly Catholic, against, well.... Scandinavia. And the British isles.

In those circumstances, I doubt Henry VIII would split.....
