Inspired by Fallout and Mass Effect Factions. I was wanting to see if we could gather up enough interest to make a successful Defiance Factions RP.
For those who do not know, Defiance is a television series on SyFi that takes place in the near future, on a terraformed Earth as a result of the arrival of a alliance of Alien Races. Called the Votanis Collective, refugees from their own ruined star systems, the United Nations cede them land in Brazil. And enter into negotiations. Fast forward 9 years, an assassination of a Votan ambassador leads to the 'Pale Wars' which was fought between the Earth Military Coalition and various Nations, against the Votanis Collective. Fast forward again and the Pale Wars end in 2032. And the RP takes place in 2046, when the series takes place.
The world called Earth is now unrecognizable. The surface is terraformed where alien animal life and the Votans are common sights around the planet. Another level of the atmosphere was added due to immense terraforming and radiation making flight extremely difficult. Areas that had one weather norm now has the opposite as Antartica is said to be paradise. There are two Superpowers in kind of a Cold War setting. The 'Earth Republic' a interracial nation but human dominated and the Votanis Collective. The main superpower fighting for a Votanis Nation.
There are also many unaffiliated towns and settlements. The most notable which is the series namesake 'Defiance' built over the 'Old World' Missouri.
And a short intro to Votan Races
Castithans look almost entirely human but have much paler, whiter skin, lighter hair colors and eye colors that range from pale pink to orange and pale blue. Castithan blood is white or light pink in color. Castithans have a much stronger sense of smell compared to humans. They are immune to Viral hemorrhagic fever and are capable of inter-breeding with humans as they reproduce relying on androgenesis, that is only with the paternal chromosomes.
Castithans view themselves as the most important of any species often leading to many other species viewing them as arrogant. Female Castithans are expected to be submissive to the males, as well as not being allowed to bathe alone, doing so would bring shame to themselves and their family. Castithans are very liberal in regards to sex and often use it to get their way. Castithans view bathing as a family activity and wealthy Castithans bathe at least three times a day.
Marusha, or one's social worth, is a concept important to the Castithans. Marusha is their social standing, their behavior, accomplishments and how well they perform in their social roles. If a Castithan fulfills their roles appropriately they are able to spend their free time any way they want; however if a male member disapproves of a females free time choices they are expected to give their pursuit up. Castithans will do what they can to ensure that they reclaim their marusha if it is hurt, even resorting to murder but ensuring that no one knows they did it.
Castithan society was originally separated into a strict system of liros, or castes, and interactions between the various castes was rare; however some higher liro members married lower liro members. This social system was fragmented after their arrival on Earth and led to the system being challenged by the newly created Thorn Liro. Single members of a liro are believed to be able to take the honor of all of their liro if they behave a certain way, leading to them having to undertake a cleansing ceremony to purify themselves, their family and their liro. Castithans have a special handshake between members of different liros, running the backs of their hands across one another. Members of the highest liro believe that their own spit is cleaner than everything below them.
Irathients have broad and flat nasal bridges, reddish skin and often have red hair. Irathients are naturally athletic and have intense combat skills. Irathients have livers. Irathients are capable of inter-breeding with humans but it requires some assistance as Irathients are triploid, receiving one chromosome from the father and two from the mother.
The Irathients are the most common of the Votan races living on Earth. They are a proud, tribal people but are often perceived as feral due in part to their love for the natural world and apparent aggression. Irathient society is centered in their spiritual beliefs and they often divide themselves into tribes. Their spiritual beliefs are made up of three idealized parts of the body: the Gyabire (the brain) the seat of intellect; the Gyagbe (the heart) the source of vitality; and he Gyargye (the stomach) the house of emotion.
Of all the Votan races to have immigrated to Earth, the Irathients have adapted best, using their affinity with nature and tribal warfare tactics to thrive in the most dangerous frontiers of Earth. Irathients will greet one another by extending out their arms and saying "eseneziri", which translates to "Without concealed weapons or hidden agendas". They prefer to keep to themselves but share a bond with the Liberata and the Sensoth, as they evolved on the same planet. They have poor relations with the Castithans and view Humans as crude and lacking respect for the environment.
The Indogene have bright white skin with a hexagonal pattern across it, hexagonal-shaped irises and no visible follicle growth. Indogene have numerous genetic and technological implants, which are similar to those used by the Ninety-Niners, and are specific to their chosen profession.
Indogene rarely live away from colonies or centers of technology. They value science above everything else and often become doctors or scientists. They tend to work to a point of obsession. They are given a short name at birth and later take a second name dependent on their implant and their profession. Indogene belief in science is so strong that they are typically atheists. After death, Indogene will burn the dead and store the remains in small hexagonal boxes. They are capable of adapting to many situations and as such are quick to get along with other Votan races and they share a unique relationship with Castithans as both feel they are the superior race; however they are uncomfortable around Humans. Many Indogene perished on board the Arks, making them the smallest race of Votans on Earth.
Liberata are generally much short than Humans and have a large whiskers on their face. Liberata only have four fingers on their hands. Liberata breathe Nitrogen and can be poisoned by oxygen. They are capable of urinating. There is some difference in telling Liberata sexes apart. Liberata are a serving class and are considered less politically-connected than the Castithans, Irathients and the Indogene. Liberata are very humble despite their social status among the other races and view their predicament as punishment for crimes of their ancestors. Liberata have a polytheistic belief system grounded in the here and now of life. Many of their religious rituals and practices are been lost and they borrow a lot from the Sensoth and the Irathients. Liberata will bury the dead verically in burial mounds with their possession stacked on top of their bodies, a practice which leads to grave being mistaken as heaps of garbage by the other Votans.
Sensoth are strong, large and tall, have extended lower jaws and a large amount of hair on their faces and live to be much older than the other Votan races. They prefer to live at a much slower pace than others, speaking and acting slowly due in part to their long lives. The Sensoth are considered less politically-connected than the Castithans, Irathients and the Indogene. Sensoth on Earth get along with all the races fairly well, some even joining with the Raiders. Due to their long life they are always planning out things. They are not without humor, but their practical jokes are always designed to unfold over time.
