A One-Shot

“Full house!” Neste laid her cards on the table with a triumphant smile. The undignified “Mine, mine, mine!” chirping that followed was typical of her cheerful disposition. The construct’s melodious laughter and soft hoots mingled with the poker chips’ crisp clattering as her delicate hands raked in the pot.

“You know, it gets annoying after the tenth hand.” The Tilktep seated across from her suspected that the machine-minded fiddle head was cheating, undoubtedly counting cards. They could play with a thousand decks and the damn construct would still factor out the probability of what remained and how it would come up. N-Serious were living proof that luck was nothing but the neglected computations of unremarked iterations. Am sighed.

The Forgotten Underling Club of Kindred, Entities and Demons – formally F.U.C.K.E.D. – were a ragtag group of characters rescued from dying or dead RPs and then promptly forgotten once the Personification Life story no longer needed them. They came in all shapes and sizes, and each dreamed of living anew, but each found themselves frequently forsooked (shut up, it’s a word now) for sake of more popular and well-known beings.

Mab’s weird-ass cat/wolf mouthpiece thing was curled up on the reception desk counter. It had served briefly until Mab decided to use her own voice. Dr. Stephen P. Koontz absentmindedly stroked its fur, his attention more focused on proofreading his rewrite of the Anarchist’s Cookbook. He’d added extra explosions and and entire chapter devoted to razor blades and other Sharp Things. Fred, Kale’s plant companion, slid a Bahama Breeze to him.

“Ah, let her cheat,” Ryoji Sato grunted. “Chaos approves.” In fact, Chaos didn’t give a damn. It was occupied elsewhere, as was Ryoji’s boss Ogoti. The cultist leader scratched the tip of his nose and turned his face to stare at the snow falling outside. “Do you suppose they’re having a good time on the Island?”

“Who cares!” Barox looked up from his project (Jorgen and he were trying to alter a kazoo to shoot death beams when played) and likewise glowered out the lobby’s plate glass window.

“Shut up, tech priest.” This grumble came from Cherry Valentine. The purple leather armchair by the window groaned as she threw her weight into it. “Varona, pass the pretzels please.”

Nevvie lowered her copy of the Underworld Times. “You’re doing it wrong,” she waspishly snapped at the kazoo killer duo. “You need more dark matter and less spam.”

“Shut up!” Tipper and Myra simultaneously hissed. They were both losing badly to Neste and neither was in a very good mood because of it.

“Nevvie, look, we have nothing better to do and-“

“No shit, Sherlock.” Dimitrus Alexandrovna was rollering badger and fennec hair from her uniform for what had to be the hundred time since she woke up this morning. She deposited it in an ashtray and watched as the penguin plucked it up and waddled away. “Do you know what F.U.C.K.E.D. needs?”

“Hope and change, and some clean underwear?” Neste supplied.

“Fuck, no. What it needs is an adventure.”

The rest of the group groaned as one, and Fred face palmed hard enough to knock some leaves off his body.

“Wait, hear me out,” Dimitrus begged. “All we do is sit around like pups in a pet shop. Sure, our names are listed under the tabs, but what are we, really? We’ve nothing to show for ourselves. Oh sure, Cherry's people had a good thing going in another thread, and Neste could have gone to that cyborg’s homeworld-“

“Captain Ophelia is probably dead,” Neste warbled mournfully.

“Deader than a doornail. Stop interrupting.” Dimitrus lit a fresh cigarette. “We need to pile into someone’s head and force them to write a one-shot. We need to remind people that we have the right to exist. We’re here. We were brought here. We need more play. Let’s have a chat with Player!Swith.”

“Well, that didn’t work,” Ryoji quipped. “How about we blow something up instead?”

Fred swatted at the helicopters circling his head, batting one aside. It spun, tail rotor too badly damaged to be of service, and landed on the Chaos Restaurant with enough force to shatter the fluted wineglasses the wait staff had just washed. Slaaneshi daemonettes fired upon him with bolters, not that it did anything but tickle.

Volturious rushed by – he’d eaten an entire bus of squealing Catholic school girls on their way to elementary school – with his chainsword held aloft.

“Oh, this is fun!” Nevvie thundered as she set fire to the library with her modified plasma-flame thrower. “We should do this more often.” She’d already done away with the hobby shop and shoe stores and was working her way towards the downtown area.

Einstein and Tesla zoomed past her on their floating Davenport. They’d unleashed the last of their rockets on the industrial district. It burned like a beacon of insanity against the grey winter sky. Tech priests of all varieties returned insidious volley from the Observatory.

Neste and Cherry ducked as the gateway they constructed rent the dimension. Velociraptors, Drones, werecreatures, and an angry SCP flag tumbled onto the street below like a wave of black buckshot poured from a shell. They swarmed-

Alright, that’s enough of that. Really, this is what happens when you allow perfectly good characters to gather dust. You have only yourselves to blame.

“Mine, mine, mine!” Neste’s clothing was still smoldering as she swept the pile of chips towards her. The lobby reeked of smoke.
