Your NS Nation's Nickname: Slobo

Character Name: Amanda Bela (married to Sanford “Sandy” Bela)

Character Gender: female

Character Species (nation personification, human, alien, etc): human

Character Physical Description (height, weight, apparent age, actual age): curly, platinum blonde hair; fair skin; big, brown eyes; 5' 3”, 115#; 32 years old, but looks a bit older. Amanda has a plain face, but many people think she has simply amazing hair, and both men and women have been known to ask her how she keeps it that way. Amanda has no idea; it's just always been that way.

URL to Character Picture, if any:

Primary Skill or Power: God's Advocate: Amanda is an excellent trial lawyer. No, scratch that: she's an incredible trial lawyer. She can get juries to lock up guilty people and throw away the key on only the sketchiest of circumstantial evidence, and can convince juries to bring down the Wrath of Tort on all sorts of slippery characters. Criminals have accepted all sorts of plea bargains and settlements on hearing that Amanda's going to represent the DA or the plaintiff.

Amanda's the same way when defending the innocent. She has gotten somebody acquitted of murder despite them being caught with a smoking gun in their hand. The “victim” was eventually shown to be an enforcer for a loan shark, and Amanda's client was rightly defending himself.

Amanda doesn't have any special sense for who's innocent or guilty, God's Advocate just manifests when she's prosecuting somebody guilty or defending somebody innocent. She's not even aware that something unusual is happening until she sees or hears people's reactions to what she's saying, and then she knows when she's got somebody dead to rights/pure as the driven snow.

Amanda convinced Sandy to watch her in court, but even when she was acting as God's Advocate, Sandy saw nothing special about her. Apparently God's Advocate isn't magic, at least not as Sandy recognizes it. Amazing insight and a talent for speaking passionately? A divine gift? Neither Amanda nor Sandy is sure how God's Advocate works.

Power Weaknesses/Flaws: God's Advocate only works when she's accusing the guilty or protecting the innocent (Amanda doesn't think this is a disadvantage, but it does limit her lawyerly powers). It also only works in court or other formal settings (Amanda often forgets this, and is surprised when people don't believe her in “civilian” life). Significantly, it doesn't work on her husband Sandy, who blithely ignores her warnings about the sorts of supernatural beings to associate with. Also significantly, Amanda isn't the best judge of supernatural beings, and she has falsely accused one who turned out to be legitimately angelic, much to her intense regret.

Amanda is otherwise just a good lawyer, better trained and more dedicated than most, but not beyond any of her former law school classmates.

Secondary Skill or Power: It May Be a Ladies' Gun, But it Will Kill a Man Just Fine: Amanda is a natural with small caliber pistols. She can just pick one up and put shots through the X ring of a target the first time, every time. She doesn't know why; she never even held a gun before Sandy found a new sort of rival to disagree with. Amanda's not a dead shot in combat, but she can outshoot most Philly cops, and even professional soldiers don't look down on her.

Additionally, It Will Kill a Thing Just Fine. One advantage of being married to an alchemist (and being a bit of one too) is that Amanda has a few clips of silver bullets, cold iron bullets, and odder things that work on supernatural beings that typical lead bullets just can't touch.

Power Weaknesses/Flaws: Only works on pistols .32 caliber and smaller. Amanda doesn't have lots of “special” bullets either.

Skills

Alchemy: Amanda's picked up a bit from Sandy and his translations of Greek and Arabic alchemy scrolls, folios, and books. She's nowhere near as good as her husband, and is hampered by her lack of Mage Sight (she can't just see whether something is working or not, she has to test it).

Singing: Amanda has a pleasant voice. She got a little training in church choir as a girl, but mostly, she just sounds good when she sings. Amanda's pretty good at picking up the lyrics to new songs too, which helps. While she can read music, she can't sight-sing the way a professional singer can.

Little Suzy Home-maker: Amanda is above average at typical Being An Adult skills: she can cook pretty well, balance a checkbook without trouble, fix typical household objects quickly, write a thank-you note with feeling, and other do other important but dull-sounding things quickly, easily, and efficiently. She'll never be mistaken for a master chef, accountant, repairman, or any other specialist, but she never fails to be surprised at how many people can't properly manage their own lives.

Francophone: Amanda had to study a language in high school and college, and she chose French. She's more or less fluent, but other than the little bit of time she and Sandy were lying low in Nantes, she hasn't had much opportunity to practice it.

Character Background/Biography: Amanda's been a “smart kid” all her life, but her gift didn't really bloom until she started working for the Philadelphia Public Defender's Office. Her career took off at that point, and she switched to the City Attorney's office to help break up an organized crime ring. Eventually, she was hired by a fancy law firm to argue complicated civil suits. That made Amanda a pretty penny, but she continued to take pro bono work defending poor people, and a special clause in her employment contract let her take on special criminal prosecutions at city request.

Amanda had already met Sandy by then; they met when she was an incoming law student and he was a junior tenure-track professor. They bumped into each other sometimes at parties near campus, but they didn't really hit it off until Sandy invited her to his apartment for a dinner date. Amanda was charmed to discover that Sandy had trained his parrot to say romantic things to her; Amanda thought that was sweet, and decided to keep them both. They married about four years ago.

Amanda was initially disturbed by Sandy's claims to be able to work magic, then fascinated when they turned out to be true. She'd never ridden a horse before, much less a stunningly-handsome flying one. Amanda's fascination turned to fear when Sandy blundered into enemies more powerful than he was, then to relief as they both were sheltered by some “friends” Sandy had made.

Amanda's fell apart in sync with Sandy's when they were on the run from Sandy's friends' enemies; that was when Amanda discovered that she could kill a man in cold blood (also a woman, two werewolves, and a scaly man-thing with yellow blood). But now that Sandy seems to have accidentally brought the both of them to a new world, she's hoping she can forget all that for good.

Why the character is in Bielefeld/Occupation: Failed attempt to return to Earth by magic.

One paragraph that sums up your character. This paragraph is what we'll use on your player tab on the first page of the thread. This MUST be brief. Your tab will contain a link to your application so people will have full details: Amanda is a sorcerer's apprentice's wife. She'd rather be known as a gifted, personable attorney, but that hasn't been so important for over a year now. Amanda's tired of running for her life, but is looking for something more fulfilling than going out in a blaze of glory. A few weeks of arguing a complex case before a jury would be great, and even a few days in a quiet city would be acceptable.

Edit: I added links to both characters' applications to link them together, and added a mention that Sanford knows a bit of Arabic (got left out me copying my draft to NS).

Sanford “Sandy” Bela
Sanford is a quiet, professional historian turned jumpy, outmatched amateur sorceror. Sanford's playful curiosity proved a bad match for supernatural guerilla war, and Sanford ended up on a losing side, pursued by foes he only partially understood. A refugee in his own world, Sanford sought sanctuary in another. Botched wizardry brought him and his wife to Bielefeld, and while bewildered by their new environment, they hope it will be safer than the one they left. Full Details.

He has dark, grey skin that protects him from the harsh rays of the sun on his homeworld, a purple film covering the irises and pupils of both of his eyes to block out UV rays, and true to tradition, his platinum hair is uncut and made into dreads that he wears atop his head in a bun.

Character Background/Biography:
Venyx was born with a soldier's heart and the restless passion of someone always vying for change. In the war of the reborn, as it came to be called, the fall of the Third Ophanim Empire saw Venyx fighting for his faction, a religious zealot who nearly gave his life for the fall of the oppressive government regime. Winning out against all hope, he and his brothers and sisters took the throne of Opha and created a new age, throwing the moon into a ritualistic cleansing of the losing side. The armies wiped out the standing populations of the other warring faction, leaving only those loyal to the reborn empire, and though Venyx had wholeheartedly supported the efforts, he was left feeling empty at the end of the battle. Then, as the new empire gained its footing on the promise that the pantheon would rebuild communities torn asunder and that this truly was the Ophanim Renaissance, dissenters began to arise, only to be snuffed out in great numbers by what the new leader called the Ophanim Military Police. Most people didn't take notice under the false pretense that they were now safe and supported by the new religious system of the Priesthood, but some, still itching to start something new in the aftermath of battle, saw the cracks in the shining white facade and wondered if they had truly gotten all they had been fighting for. These people, led by underground leaders made up of ex-soldiers and passionate civilians, began to gather information on the true intent of the new religious system. Unbeknownst to his husband, Venyx went against his vows of peace following the war and joined in these underground organizations, hoping to find a purpose again in something bigger than himself.

Venyx is an Ophanim soldier inside and out, living for conflict, but loyal to those who can prove themselves to him. He is nothing without something to fight for, and in the absence of battle, he will seek out any way to feel needed, even if that means breaking the law. He is impressionable, but likeable, and can be extremely stubborn when he believes in something with his whole heart, though perhaps his ability to stand and fight is his greatest asset.

There are battle sims and other places where he can quaff his need for combat. The last thing you want to do is go tear-assing around Bielefeld harming the NPC citizens or destroying public property.

He's approved. I need to work him into the setting. We're running a special event so things aren't normal at all in the IC. It'll take me a few to do that.

TG sent to see if player is still interested.

(Yes, we're going to have some double posts from me but it's much easier for me to track what I've done/haven't done as I work.)

Your NS Nation's Nickname: Do I have to have one? If so, Shahan.

Character Name: Matthew Jarretta

Character Gender: Male

Character Species (nation personification, human, alien, etc): Human

Character Physical Description (height, weight, apparent age, actual age):
Height: 6' 4"
Weight: 183 lbs.
Apparent Age: Mid 30's
Actual Age: 28
Description: He looks a bit Italian, thanks to his ancestry. He has short, messy, dark brown hair, light wrinkles on his forehead and under his eyelids, tired, blue-gray eyes, and a shit-eating grin on his lips. He has a rather average build, though it's hard to tell through his often baggy clothing. He's usually wearing an aged leather jacket, dirty jeans, and a pair of old, rounded, steel-toed boots. Quite toned musculature adds a few pounds to his frame. His constant slouch and baggy eyes make him appear somewhat tired.

Primary Skill or Power: Enhanced Durability: The guy is essentially a human tank; it takes some serious firepower to take him down. The average person would pass out from exhaustion before they could take him down in a fistfight, and he can shrug of most non-lethal stab/gunshot wounds.

Power Weaknesses/Flaws: Matthew is slow as hell both in and out of combat, which can be a problem, seeing as anyone with even slightly above-average agility can dodge his attacks with ease. On top of this, though he's quite good at shrugging off damage, the damage he is dealt takes far longer than normal to heal properly.

Secondary Skill or Power: Enhanced Stamina: He keeps in excellent shape due to the fact that he can keep going for hours.

Power Weaknesses/Flaws: He can keep going for hours on end, but hunger, thirst, lack of sleep, etc. will increase his fatigue very rapidly, and when he does tire out, he has to take more time than the usual to recover. This can leave him completely incapacitated for extended periods of time.

Character Background/Biography: Matthew Luke Jarretta was born to a pair of middle class parents in Queens, NYC. Sound a bit dull? Well, that's a good description of most of Mr. Jarretta's younger years. Even his attitude exuded dullness, with just a hint of a sourpuss undertone. He didn't like playing with other children, barely spoke, and preferred to be by himself. He wasn't a bad child, per say, he was just...apathetic. And a bit of a loser. Indeed, even from a young age, it looked like Matthew was going to be a real average joe. Then he was hit by a car.
It wasn't a severe hit, mind you, but it was certainly hard enough that the driver had every right to freak out when 12-year-old Matthew simply stood up and stared at him, a complacent look on his face. Perhaps due to the shock rattling his mind, it took young Matt a few moments to realize that he...really shouldn't have been standing. After a brief and highly uncomfortable exchange with the still-shaken driver, Matthew started heading home, ready to put the whole ordeal behind him. This, unfortunately, didn't happen, as the driver refused to let the young boy leave without calling an ambulance. Though both Matthew's family and the driver refused to believe that there was nothing to worry about, the doctor told them just that: the kid only had a few scratches and bruises.
Now, it would have been easy to shrug off as a simple stroke of luck, which was what most of the people involved decided, but Matthew remained oddly unconvinced. Maybe something deep inside of his soul knew his true power, or maybe Matthew was just stupid, but he immediately set out to test just how much of a beating his body could take.
Days and weeks came and went, and Matthew slowly tested just how much damage he could stand. He started off slowly, a bit of rooftop jumping here, a little insurance fraud there...although, it wasn't long before he started testing on some more "extreme" levels, like jumping from much higher rooftops and stabbing himself. It took until he suffered only a fractured rib and a broken elbow landing on solid concrete from a 9th story hotel room, but eventually, Mr. Jarretta decided that he likely had superhuman durability. However, he did nothing with this newfound knowledge, being the apathetic, boring loser he was. Life went back to the way it used to be, and it seemed that Matthew's life had returned to its previous state of simplicity. And then came high school.
Matthew was a fat child, but when the testosterone started seeping into his bloodstream and the estrogen started seeping into the lovely local girls' bloodstreams, he decided some weight loss would do him good. Now, it wasn't that Matthew wanted to exercise for hours on end, it was just that he could, and he also believed that excessive workout sessions would make him lose weight faster. He would spend almost all his free time at the gym, listening to his funky early 2000's grunge music and ignoring the gym owner's requests that he stop "overexerting" himself. In fact, Matthew took some offense to the owner's request. He was most certainly not overexerting himself! Hell, it would usually take a full afternoon before Matthew would even break a sweat. He'd never even thought of this as unnatural. He just assumed that everyone in gyms worked out this much, and up until his freshman year of high school, he just assumed that everyone at the gym spent this much time getting in shape. It took some convincing, but eventually, Matthew realized that, not only could he jump from a 9th story window, land on concrete, and survive, but he could also get up and run four miles to the nearest hospital to fix his broken ribs. He developed a shit-eating grin during this time, a grin that, when viewed, made even passing strangers feel angry and upset, as if he was making fun of them by curling his lips. The thing is, he was doing just that, to a degree. He was sure, no, he knew, that he was better than anyone else that walked into that gym. He knew that he could win any race or fistfight that came his way.
If you couldn't tell, Matthew was becoming a bit of an asshole. Hell, he almost went out of his way to prove it. He bought a pair of boots, a stupid amount of white wife beaters, and tore every pair of jeans he owned. But it wasn't right just yet. No, he needed something especially douchey to top it all off. So, he took his grandfather's leather jacket (which, conveniently, fit like a glove). He had done it. He was now the ultimate bad ass.
His attitude stayed awful and his ego kept inflating through the rest of his high school career. Eventually, though, the years went by, and Matthew was given a full scholarship to a nearby university to join their track team. Looks like the bad guys finish first, right? Well, not exactly. Turns out that being a jerk and flexing your muscles doesn't count for a lot in college, and Matthew dropped out before the end of his first semester. Even worse, his parents refused to let him move back in. Matthew started getting desperate at this point, going as far as to look up old "friends" from his days in high school and attempting to bum off of them. Not a single one let him in.
Matthew was unsure what to do with himself at this point. He'd literally fallen from the top of the world down to the lowest point of his life within a month. No job, no home, and nowhere left to turn to, Matthew just gave up. He festered in the streets, begging for change and living off of soup kitchens. He spent longer than he cares to admit like this, wallowing in his past, cursing the names of those who damned him, and just generally being a miserable pile of flesh. That is, of course, until he stopped. Why'd he stop? Even he doesn't fully know, but one day, he simply decided he'd had enough, scrounged up some money, left New York, and started traveling. Hitchhiking, flying, and sailing everywhere he could.
Talk about a changed man. His time traveling the world made a broken and miserable homeless man living in the past into a fully-functioning, proud member of society. He was introduced to many new ideals and cultures, he tried new foods and met new people. However, one particular ideal caused his life to take a complete 180° turnaround: live for the now.
Live for the now. It essentially tells you not to dwell in the past or future, and let things come as they come. That's how Matthew interpreted it, anyways. It's funny, to anyone that knew him, he would have seemed to be the person he was as a child. He was reserved and reclusive. Although, he still had that stupid, shit-eating grin and bad outfit, but he slouched more. He kept to an easier, slower pace. Essentially, though it may not look it from a first glance, he'd found peace with himself. It took five years and a lot of hitchhiking, but his life was back on track.
He headed home shortly after this revelation, back to New York. He rented and apartment and went from crappy job to crappy job, and everything was okay again. Except...he didn't feel right. He wasn't sure why for a while, but it gnawed at him constantly. It came to him one day as he was in the middle of one of his daily meditation rituals he'd picked up at some point during his travels: he didn't want to be here. There was so much else to see in the world. Why would he stay in boring New York? He knew New York. He wanted to go somewhere else. So, he packed up his bags and, just as he had before, left New York behind, except this time, he planned on finding somewhere to settle down.

Why the character is in Bielefeld/Occupation: Pure luck, really. He was planning on settling down anyways, and Bielefeld seemed just fine to him. He takes whatever jobs he can find, though he does well where a lot of physical work is necessary, naturally.

Link to RP examples: (this MUST be a DIRECT LINK to your IC post in an RP, NOT a link to the RP thread itself. If you don't have examples, make your biography good.) I don't have any on hand, apologies.

IMPORTANT:
One paragraph that sums up your character. This paragraph is what we'll use on your player tab on the first page of the thread. This MUST be brief. Your tab will contain a link to your application so people will have full details: A bit reclusive, a bit sour, and a lot apathetic, Mr. Matthew Jarretta really just wants to settle down and live out the rest of his life in piece. He's a pain to be around at times, in part thanks to his snarky attitude and unbearable shit-eating grin. He has superhuman stamina and durability, but he keeps those factoids to himself. Though he may be slow to warm to people, slightly smelly, dirty, badly dressed, hard to start a conversation with, and generally lazy, he's the perfect person to come to when things are too crazy to keep track of.

Also, I may be slightly inactive for my first couple of weeks here. College finals are evil.

Approved. Don't worry about posting; finals are more important than RP. Send a TG to me when you're ready to become active. I'll need to weave your character in; we have a change of venue for the holidays, thus we're not in Bielefeld.

Tab added.

Added:

Rmwtyliin Saagve Annvyeelee Fvvarniimalasaakuuliia
Rmwtyliin is a tweenaged princess from medieval Fvaarniimar who has "somehow" ended up in Bielefield. She's not afraid to try new things, is something of a trendsetter, and loves art. If at all possible, she'll attempt to resolve situations diplomatically. Also, she has issues with most males. Full Details.

Kwa'a or "Duck" Bhewehg
Kwa'a is a personification, of sorts, of Borksmiclen. Due partially to beliefs present at her formation, she's basically a strong spirit- possessing a few mental powers (basically useless for the moment) and some very weak physical ones- with a human body. As the Bomic government is hostile towards most women, especially ones who appear to have prolonged their lives through occult means, and (due to a foolish incident in her "youth") particularly ones who match her physical description, she's here as, ironically, a refugee. Full Details.

Sorry. Given the length of my bio, however, I still think that that was the lesser of two evils. ;)

wut?

TBH, any foreign currency (so as long as it is a metal) is accepted, for reasons too. Solid gold will get far.

Cause to note: the coins are made up of metal. In fact there are three types of currencies used on the planet.

Coins(Fancy coins cause paper money is useless and there are 4 kinds of coins)
bartering(trading this for that)
and credits (accepted galactic currency)

To note,
1 credit = 1 USD
1 Platinum coin = 100 USD
1 Gold coin = 25 USD
1 Titanium coin = 1 USD
1 tin coin = 0.125
(If you haven't noticed, the economics is a bit wanky)

Again, since you are bringing in foreign currency and metal, scale will be used.

The "wut" bit was me stashing random info within a horizontal rule. I looked up gold values and such; while actual value may vary, the coins, which are about the size of a dime, are worth about 55 USD based on modern value of gold. The scale will be very helpful.

Heads up: gold and silver are bad ideas if you're looking to add them to nation play.

One problem is that these coins are stamped with a face value far below the value of the metal content. The one-ounce silver Eagle has a legal tender value of $1 (silver is currently over $23/ounce) and the gold Eagle is a $50 coin (the gold price is almost $1,400*). Obviously, no one would use $23 worth of silver to buy a can of Diet Coke from a vending machine. http://www.forbes.com/sites/realspin/2013/08/21/solving-a-serious-mystery-why-dont-gold-and-silver-coins-circulate/

On a NS scale, when encountering non-MT nations, the gold and silver may be far below or far above current market value in the players "world", or may not hold any value at all. Gold is only used for electronics in my nation. We scrap large amounts of it. GT's nation goes by stamped value. That's why I recommend that players have their characters use an exchange (banks offer this service) or else credit cards when purchasing outside their lands.

*the coin's current value is $1.5k.

I'm all for Gio's idea. Ignore the math aspect of it.

edit: credit cards working on Gliese - was established during a character trip.

Figured we might be doing something like that, and that GT's currency wasn't an exact fit for real values. Regarding the Heads, though: legal tender in Borksmiclen. There, and anywhere else, equal to the actual value of the gold in said area. I figured, among other things, that it was a sensible way to give Kwa'a some portable funds.
(In case anyone is curious - they are stamped, but not with any value. Except on very old Heads (only a few taken along, as these contain copper) the God-Emperor's head is on the obverse (convex) with something else (in modernity, a cockroach) on the reverse (concave.))

Much better. I was going to have my characters get jobs in the main setting -- and Ye Olde Transmutation of Metals is something alchemists are known for ;) -- but I'm not prepared for dealing with IC money issues right now.

That's a fine approach, too.

BTW, were you planning to have Jasmine react to what Amanda and Sandy said here? It's not necessary, but I didn't want you to be waiting for Tilt to respond and him to be waiting on you. :p

That Is why I went with a post-scarcity economy where novelty is more valuable than gold. It was caused by the finding out that there were entire universes made of money, as well as other resources that are more useful and the advent of time travel screwing over the stock market.

Maybe, but I find it more of an inconvenience to use paper money. And since this is a galactic empire, it is not that hard to find most of these precious metals in planets and asteroid fields.

All: Do please note that the Empire is going through a transition, meaning possibly next visit or so, the old currencies that they use now (With the coins) will become obsolete, but because the way things are, values of currency is all fucked up. That is the price of war...And building an ego ship.

Then again, maybe they might not get rid of the currency, since in case if one currency goes bad, they can still have the other to trade with.

Anyway, hope you all bared with me on that since right now I am having a bad migraine and either my wernicke's area or my broca's area (most likely broca) is being affected right now because I cannot talk that well IRL with this thing.
