Again, this universe, like most comic books, is probably pretty advanced, so an artificial intelligence that can pick up brain waves without physical contact doesn't seem that far off.

Though, when Duncan was 14, he had learned that Ferdinand had been diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer, and a few months afterwards, Ferdinand had passed away. Thinking that anyone who got close to him died, Duncan quickly became depressed, ran away from his orphanage, and turned to cigarettes for comfort.
