How does your government work: The President is elected every eight years, directly by the people, and serves one term as both head of state and government. The legislature, known as Congress, has two house that are both directly elected. The upper house, called the Senate, is elected every four years along with the president. Each of the 10 states elects 3 Senators per term. The lower house, called the National Assembly, is elected every two years. Each state is divided into electoral districts that each elects a representative that make up the 450 members of the Assembly.

History:
In the 1960s, as African nations were granted their first taste of independence, the continent was quickly thrown into chaos. Correct puppet governments began to replace colonial administrations, and violent coups and civil war seemed to threaten stability across the continent. Though in exile, the former monarch Emperor Halie Selassie of Ethiopia, watched the situation with growing concern. Ethiopia, as the only African empire to retain it's independence through the turbulent imperial era, had garnered a lot of respect in the eyes of the world, especially the Africans.
He moved swiftly to unite the East African peoples under a grand alliance, resisting intense Cold War pressures as the great powers, fearful of a self-sufficient Africa, worked to undermine him. He succeeded in uniting the newly independent nations of Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, and the Central African Republic in a common alliance, similar to the ill-fated European Union. Western corporations however, became fearful when the Emperor befriended the Soviet Union.
A violent revolution, which many suspect was masterminded by western governments in cooperation with the Byzantines, allowed dissidents in the alliance to capture and assassinate the Emperor, throwing the alliance into chaos. The momentum of the alliance maintained itself however, and the various tribes and peoples of the alliance states watched as the world around them crumbled, while freedom and economic prosperity allowed them to flourish. There resolve strengthened, and in the 1980s, a strong pan-African movement lead to the creation of the United East African Republic.
Since the 1980s, the UEAR has thrived into an economic powerhouse. Heavy manufacturing and mining, powered by the nation's vast supply of natural resources, power the $3.85 trillion dollar economy. Growth, however, has not come without a cost. Since 1986, the nation suffered through a 4 year civil war in 1992, and multiple insurgencies have rocked the nation in recent years. The National Assembly is home to over 10 different political parties, which often act along ethnic lines, making political gridlock a common and frustrating occurrence. Reform is urgently needed, or many fear years of government inefficiency will bring the entire region to its knees.
