The latter does, Europe would still be a major economic power and technological driver in the world, except they would have to trade for goods rather than extorting colonies.

Just because the Europeans didn't conquer them doesn't mean they never met. The Europeans would have met the tribes on the coast line upon landing in Africa.

And why would they land there if they didn't colonize? Or set up outposts? Or forts? Or whatever? It makes no sense. Why would they come ashore?

That might be a tad premature. But if the current America gets the boot there is no reason America should have that land anyways. Canada is currently four puppet nations of the USA anyways, which I think is stupid. Considering he attacked the British for Canada when Canada was independent before the POD. And considering he just lost the South again there is no way America would be able to defeat Canada on its own to the severity it did.

And has anything map-related changed? Territory, or what? New nations?
