Yeah, I only learnt the kana this year when I began formally taking Japanese in school. Technically we're only supposed to know like 15 kanji so far, but about a quarter of the people (including me ) know more than that. http://jisho.org/ is a great resource.

The main plot of this arc will actually be focused on the end-of-term project (which is a group project conducted in the overworld), but there will be opportunity for subplots in Limbo and possibly the underworld. RE Animals: Yes, since animals have souls that are taken to the underworld (though reaping animals is much less prestigious than regular reaping jobs, so it's usually someone's last resort to keep from drowning [unless they just really like animals]), one could technically find one and take it to Grim City with them. As long as they fill out the appropriate paperwork first.
