Here's another question then. Why don't they just use regular bullets?

Well... here's what makes this rifle pretty awesome... It's electric, meaning this can be used to paralyze if on a significantly lower setting and is much more efficient than a bullet, which has the possibility of only causing a wound, instead of a kill. This gun can act as both a capture/control tool and a military weapon.

Plus, bullets are boring...

Slorch wrote:So what happens when they miss?

Most likely the electricity will simply dissipate. That would be the main problem of the rifle: range.

Unless if it harnessed the power of a lightning strike, it most likely wouldn't have that much range for collateral damage. Also, most of the time it should be set to a mere stun instead of kill... hopefully...

Bullets might be boring but there practical. This electric bullet is not boring but impractical.

edit: You also need to take into account the media and the general populace.

Actually, there are things like this in use with modern day police forces. There are literal shotgun rounds that act as tasers and can shock an assailent at range. This can even be modified to kill if you power it up enough.

Bulletproof vests may be able to stop a bullet... but good luck with electricity... This would force a new change in body armor if it is used en masse.

Currently, it is rather impracticle due to the difficulty that would come with manufacturing and the training required to utilize it.

But this can be changed if focus is shifted onto it to create a new type of bullet to be used in newer models of weapons, which can give sodiers and police a wider variety of options on the field.

Edit: The public approved of the electric chair, gas chambers, hanging, napalm, and at one point chemicle gas for warfare. It doesn't really matter as a factor because there would be only an instant of pain before death, rather than a lingering pain from a bullet.

We do not however know if it can be turned down. Also the energy required to do what was described would be stupidly high.

...They can turn it down. If you can use that large amount of energy in one rifle to create enough power to turn a body to ash, then you can lower it enough to simply paralyze someone or render them unconscious.

We do not know in this case if it can be turned down.

Edit: Ok, lets just assume that it can be lowered. In which case you would be correct. But, now think about how the media would react.

Edit 2: You know the more I think about it the more I'm tempted to agree. I probably just overreacted.

Okay, first. For them to create this new weapon a whole FUCKTON of experiments would have to be run for how much voltage could be utilized with the rifle. They would have to measure all that way up to see if it could take the level at which another being would die (effectively passing paralysis and unconsciousness) then they would go all the way up to where it is now.

My point here, is that it HAS to be able to run at a lower frequency in order for it to even achieve this status.

If a company has the capabilities the create such a weapon with this level of power then they're already capable of lowering it.

Here are some examples...

Humans started with fireworks and went all the way to ballistic missle and beyond. You can't START with a ballistic missle and not have anything that came before at a lower level, like fireworks.

Did we start with the chainsaw or the axe?

Did we start with the musket or the assault rifle?

Just think about it. Did they start with a weapon this poweful? Obvious answer is no. They started smaller and worked their way up.

The wouldn't allow production of a weapon this powerful or be able to create one if they weren't able to control it and lower it's power.

>Edit: Ok, lets just assume that it can be lowered. In which case you would be correct. But, now think about how the media would react.

The public approved of the electric chair, gas chambers, hanging, napalm, and at one point chemicle gas for warfare... Plus, so what if the public and media dislike it? That doesn't make it any less effective at it's one purpose... being an effective weapon.

Plus, I think the media would rather like to have police be able to instantly stop criminals and soldiers be able to end firefights within a few shots, instead of prolonging it and making the possibility of casualties multiplied.

I'm convinced. But you still haven't my question about the media.

I'll put this to rest.

The device isn't a rifle, it's an ammunition (don't ask how it stores that much energy, I'll probably come up with an explanation later) that is meant to fit the current DMR of the Equestrian military. It has high range and lethal killing power.

Of course Silver didn't start with a lethal round, he worked up as he added more and more power so as to achieve the quickest death possible (humanitarian reasons), the lower powered bullets will also be availing for sale.

An additional point, since the high power and low power use the same frame and material, any sudden electrical shock can potentially turn a low power into a lethal one, also direct contact with the ammunition is often fatal. They are stored in safe cases.

Both bullet types shatter on impact so the results on exposed skin are often quite nasty, for this reason the low power rounds have slower muzzle velocity and as such less range.

The electrocution is very bright but vanishes quickly.

Anything else?

*eye-roll* You silly little fillies! Arguing over electro-cannons and stuff!

On another note: Magic can be any sufficiently advanced technology beyond our understanding. You can't deny that having magical abilities would seriously improve an organism's chance of survival, and therefore cause magical abilities, even mild ones, to become dominant/prevalent among the population. We could assume that such magic is taking advantage of the laws of physics, discovered or no. Science is very simple: It can explain almost everything, admits its shortfalls, and tries to make those up be rewriting the rules. We used to think the world was flat. Now we're, to quote Earth (The Book), "an atom on a pimple on god's ass." So, magic IS scientifically possible, we just wouldn't recognize it as science, since it's beyond our understanding. Capisce?

Finally, I want to make a note on Ghost's miraculous survival: Why not assume that Chrysalis saved him, in the hopes that he would join up with Derpy again and allow Chrysalis access to a powerful well of love courtesy of one of her subjects? A bit crazy, but Chrysalis IS crazy, if anything else!

Man, you were doing so good up until...

So, magic IS scientifically possible, we just wouldn't recognize it as science, since it's beyond our understanding.

*Rolls eyes* Oh, you silly little filly, that's not how science works...

Wikipedia:
In modern usage, "science" most often refers to a way of pursuing knowledge, not only the knowledge itself. It is also often restricted to those branches of study that seek to explain the phenomena of the material universe.[6] In the 17th and 18th centuries scientists increasingly sought to formulate knowledge in terms of laws of nature such as Newton's laws of motion. And over the course of the 19th century, the word "science" became increasingly associated with the scientific method itself, as a disciplined way to study the natural world, including physics, chemistry, geology and biology. It is in the 19th century also that the term scientist was created by the naturalist-theologian William Whewell to distinguish those who sought knowledge on nature from those who sought other types of knowledge.[7]

If magic was real then it would be constituted as a law of nature. Why? Because of this...

You can't deny that having magical abilities would seriously improve an organism's chance of survival

You're right, I can't deny it, but do you know what the rest of that statement means? It means that an multicellular organism used magic as a natural ability to survive in it's natural world. Science is a...

disciplined way to study the natural world, including physics, chemistry, geology and biology.

I'll say it again, if magic was real then it would be considered a part of the natural world, thus it could be studied, analyzed, experimented, and documented like any other scientific data.

It should also be apparent that ponies would be able to analyze magic scientifically just like humans, since science is universal and applies to everything.

I want to make a note on Ghost's miraculous survival: Why not assume that Chrysalis saved him, in the hopes that he would join up with Derpy again and allow Chrysalis access to a powerful well of love courtesy of one of her subjects? A bit crazy, but Chrysalis IS crazy, if anything else!

This makes a lot of sense for changelings. The hive requires love as a food source and the queen would send out drones to gather said love and send it back to the hive to keep it sustained and ensure another generation of changelings.

The changelings are much like sentient bees or ants in a sense because of this.

Idea: approved

Eh, it wasn't really about Ghost or his "death" but rather more about how someone could survive it and remained undetected.

While we could of asked... we weren't really thinking about it... but it was fun nonetheless. (I find them fun)

While your explanation is definetly a stretch, its better than dying and then coming back because "lel magic".
