March 2014. The armed forces of the Russian Federation have stormed into Crimea and the Eastern Ukraine in a completely unexpected turn of events following the Ukranian revolution which deposed President Viktor Yanukovych. Numerous key sites have been seized by armed men without insignia believed to be Russian Army. Ukrainian sailors and soldiers are under siege in their bases by the Russian military. All Ukrainian armed forces in the Crimean peninsula have been ordered to surrender; failure to do so, says Russia, will result on an all-out attack. The Ukrainian military is currently being fully mobilized.

Meanwhile, EU and NATO countries have done nothing except for threaten possible sanctions and express their disapproval. But as the situation escalates - for at this moment, it shows little sign of deescalating - what they they do? Can this crisis be resolved peacefully and diplomatically, or will it lead to violence and a possible war with West, however small-scale it may be?

Well, what the future holds is in our hands now. Will the situation be resolved peacefully? Will diplomatic relations collapse? Will there be a civil war? Will there be a war between NATO and Russia? Who will emerge victorious?

CRIMEANS SEEK ASYLUM IN BELGIUM; A PLACE OF SAFETY FOR THEM?
Image

Wilrijk, Antwerp, Belgium

Belgium has recently seen a small influx of immigrants arriving from the Crimea; they are Crimean Tatars.
The Crimean Tatars, a Uzbek ethnic group whose main languages are Turkic and Ukrainian, have chosen Belgium as their place of asylum and the government is allowing this.

Recently, one has set up a small restaurant, delivering traditional Ukrainian cuisine to the people of Wilrijk. He and his family moved here at the very start of the crisis. They declined an interview.

What we do know about this crisis is, that it's stopped Belgians squabbling over their own ethnic issues; they've put it aside to help the Tatar immigrants, who are new to this land.

Although Russians in Belgium have been around since the 19th century, the issue of the Crimean occupation has not yet been discussed amongst them, at least as far as we know.

Whether there will be hate crime towards the Tatar immigrants by Russian-Belgians, we do not know.

But what we can say is, based on our interviews with a small cross-section of the immigrants, the Crimea does not belong to Russia and should remain in Tatar, or at the very least, Ukrainian, hands. One elderly man, in his early 60s, said "Krym ye ne vlasnistʹ Rosiyi . Tse nasha zemlya , ostriv ukrayinsʹkoho narodu , i vony ne povynni hrubo zalyakuvaty sviy shlyakh u nashiy terytoriyi. Davayte zhyty v sviti." (Ukrainian transliteration) - in English, "The Crimea is not Russia's property. It is our land, the Ukrainian people's island, and they should not flagrantly bully their way into our territory. Let us live in peace."

Many of the Ukrainians and Tatars immigrating to our nation agree with this sentiment; only a very small proportion - 0.05% seem to think it should stay in Russia's hands.

But will the Great Bear continue to get its way, or could a fight for the island take place? It seems only too likely there will be a fight for the territory, to the death if needs be.

Davayte zhyty v Sviti .

The Federal Council of Switzerland did not believe in war. Nor would they ever, and in the Swiss Constitituion it explicitly states that Switzerland shall not enter a conflict unless attacked. What the Federal Council did want, however, was for Russia to pull out of Crimea peacefully. They opted for a strongly-worded letter to Putin voicing their opinions:

President Putin of the Russian Federation,

You know as well as we do that Switzerland will not go to war with anyone. Unless there are Russian bombers over Geneva and Bern, you need not worry about skilled Swiss marksmen on the front. What you may have overlooked, however, in your haste to infuriate the international community, is that many influential Russian citizens have Swiss bank accounts where they hide their more questionable income from Russian tax law. And if there is a war over Crimea, or indeed if you do not pull out, then certain Russian citizens may find their accounts frozen. Please consider this if you move forward with your goal of annexing the peninsula. Our deadline is two weeks from now, March 17th. Sincerely,

The Federal Council, Swiss Federation

The Belgian Prime Minister also wrote a letter to Putin which read:
Dear President Putin of the Russian Federation,
Your nation's occupation of Crimea is a breach of international law and custom.
The native population of the Ukrainians, Crimean Tatars, Krmychaks, Karaites see it as their nation, a part of the Ukraine, and we, the nation of Belgium, politely request that you return the land to Ukraine, peacefully, and without question.

The Ukrainian diaspora in Belgium have been holding riots over this, with 15 people injured in the last few days. They see the Crimea as their land, and whilst they appreciate the Russians have as much a right to live there as them, they see it as their land, which it technically is.

I politely ask for your nation to return it without a struggle; the Western world is watching the situation closely.

In return for this, we would like to propose trade talks if the land is returned, but only if it is returned.

Letter sent from the Georgian Prime Minister, Irakli Garibashvili, to Vladimir Putin,

Dear President Putin of the Russian Federation,
We are extremely outraged at your breach into the the state of Crimea. This is a breach of many laws set forth by the 1991 Ukrainian Independence Accord and the 1995 East European Agreement. We don't forget when you breached the borders of The Republic of Georgia in 2008, we know that you are there for your own selfish desires and nothing else. We know that the Crimea is 85% ethnic Russians, but that still doesn't give you the right to send troops and take a port which is the life blood of the Ukrainian economy.

We politely urge you to pull out of Crimea at once, If your country does not comply, you will have a severe blow dealt to you and your people. Anywhere from diplomatic santions, to economic sanctions, to military force.

If you pull out of the Crimea, we will not only withhold any sanctions, we will try and hold a conference in Tblissi to open up trade talks with the Russian Federation.

We hope you make the right decision, for your nation, yourself, and the Russian people.
Signed,
Irakli Garibashvili

Letter from Chancellor Merkel of the Federal Republic of Germany to President Putin of the Russian Federation:
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
Image

President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation,

Your recent action in the Crimea has brought much debate over what should be done, as the vast majority of the German populace sees this action as a violation of the sovereignty of Ukraine.

It has been recognized by myself and many other politicians that Sevastopol is an extremely important place in the history of the Russian people and means a lot to Russian people, having it's stories told to them in schools across your vast country. However, the significance of this single city does not give you a valid excuse to invade the entirety of the Crimean peninsula, despite 85% of the populace being ethnically Russian. There are ethnic Russians in many countries, including my own, yet you do not invade those.

The Federal Republic of Germany imports a huge amount of gas from the Russian Federation, which makes me very reluctant to impose economic sanctions against your country, as it would surely bring Germany to it's knees. Despite this, I suggest that you pull troops out of Ukraine and respect it's sovereignty.

Signed,
Chancellor Angela Merkel
Federal Republic of Germany

In a personal letter to President Putin of the Russian Federation, Chairman Jinping urged Vladimir to continue on the path that he considered righteous for the Russian people. The West always seeked a say in Eastern affairs, and yet again, they delve unbeknownst into foreign, domestic affairs with an air of ignorance.

Continue to do what is best for your people. Beijing, nor DC, or any other capital worldwide is able to dictate what is best for Russia, save Moscow. While the People's Republic cannot currently provide military support to your cause, should the situation worsen, trust that Chinese troops will be at your side.

In solidarity!
I'm here.

Chancellor Merkel has called for an EU discussion on Bulgaria's recent announcement of militant action against the nations of Serbia and Macedonia. She gave her views on their actions in a speech in Berlin earlier today:
"President Rosen Pleveneliev has recently issued a warning to Germany and fellow members of the European Union that they will be engaging in militant actions against the sovereign states of Macedonia and Serbia. This is no better than the actions that Russia has made against the Ukraine. The Bulgarian President has calle dthe governments of both Macedonia and Serbia "oppressive" and "corrupt." This is no excuse to get involved in their affairs and this entire announcement lacks a valid reason.

I ask for the EU including Bulgaria to meet in Brussels to discuss whether Bulgaria should be allowed to take these actions, and if so with what intervention from major nations such as France, the United Kingdom, and our own nation.

As for talks of a reunification between Bulgaria and Romania, that is of no concern, as long as it is what the people want. I am in no way against this proposal. Their statements about their future in the Balkans, however, is one that I do not think is justifiable.

Germany agrees to allow Switzerland to participate in the EU conference in Brussels, and also formally requests for the USA to join the meeting also, for the issues in the Ukrainian region and the Balkans are that of a global nature.

Battle of Zvonce

Postby Tuva SSR » Sat Mar 22, 2014 1:22 pm

General Simeon Simeonov breathes heavily from the grass he is hiding in,and swings an AKK around his back.He points towards Zvonce,Serbia, and suddenly Bulgarian Soldiers swarm out of the grass. He yells "Charge!",alerting nearby Serbian Soldiers.Bulgarian Soldiers pop in and out of the grass, firing at Serbian Soldiers as they go along.Things start exploding around Serbian Soldiers, and Bulgarian Soldiers continue firing.Tanks begin to tread foward, and General Simeonev begins to fire himself in the shade of the 8:00 PM dusk.Serbian Soldiers fire back, and the fight is even until General Simeonev orders a feigned retreat.Suddenly,Bulgarian attacks stop, and the Serbians follow the movements, curious to see where they are going.Suddenly,Bulgarian Soldiers are running everywhere, and the Serbs follow down a hill. They follow to the Bulgarian border, where even more Bulgarian Troops were. They get there, and come face on into Simeonev's men.One Serbian Soldier begins to fire, and the rest do.Bulgarian Tanks roll out of a nearby garage and fire on the Serbian Troops. The firefight continues for two hours, until the Serbian General calls a retreat.Bulgarian Troops are quick to follow, and both armies go straight through Zvonce, and the Bulgarians chased them to Nis.

President Pranab Mukherjee

President Pranab Mukherjee sat in his office reading through tons of letters, and messages. He saw something through the pile, a letter on the "war in Crimea", he opened up the letter to reveal that Russia has official invaded into Ukraine, and began firing upon Ukraine troops in Crimea. President Pranab Mukherjee found this offending, seeing as Ukraine was a former USSR state of Russia, he immediately drew up papers for President Vladimir Putin,

Dear President Vladimir Putin of The Russian Federation,

I, President Pranab Mukherjee hereby denouce you on your acts upon Ukraine over the Crimean territory of Ukraine. I believe that you should of allowed them to ask to leave Ukraine to join the Russian federation before invading. This is a complete disgrace to the whole situation. Seeing as it could of been taken with Diplomatic ways, rather than with war! I wish for you to stop this, before I have to send in Armies to fight you. I do not wish for this to happen, but will do what it is right for the countries of Europe, and the world!

Sincerely, President Pranab Mukherjee of India.

Having spite, and disgrace to send the message to the Russians, he did anyways...

Politicians on Cisis in Crimea

The Prime Minister of Sweden is under fire after commenting on the crisis in Crimea. Prime Minister Frederik Reinfeldt stated, "It's somewhat understandable that Russia is acting on concerns about the Russian minority of Crimea and eastern Ukraine, but not in the way they're doing it. There are of course methods for talking to the Ukrainian government and calm down the situation in that way." This quote caught the attention of both politicians and the normal everyday people alike. Later in the day Reinfeldt went on to say Russia’s behavior was reprehensible.
On the other side of the aisle Foreign Minister Carl Bildt claims Russia’s actions are violations of international law. He went on to say “Russia’s claim that they are protecting ethnic Russians in Crimea would be akin to Syria sending their army to Sweden to protect ethnic Syrians after the Stockholm riots. It is not a legitimate reason to enter another country and threaten their sovereignty."

Swedish Military in Gotland

Swedish politician Jan Bjorklund’s suggestion that military units be stationed on Gotland in case a war between Russia and Sweden broke out has come true. Military aircraft have been moved onto the island as a result of the Russian exercises near Kaliningrad. Tensions have heightened because of the Russian exercises and the intervention in Crimea. The Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces, Sverker Goranson, believes Sweden needs to be ready to defend its homeland in case Russia becomes even more aggressive. He has urged the Reinfeldt and Bildt to call an emergency meeting of the Nordic Council and requested clearance to get in contact with Norway, Finland, and Denmark’s military leaders to discuss potential upcoming scenarios. He is quoted as saying, "Russian aggression cannot remain unchecked and while we can do little other than impose sanctions we must be prepared for any future moves they may make."

Few Swedes trust the military to defend them if the Russians were to invade.

Embassy in Karkhova and Ukrainian-Swedish Relations

The Swedish ambassador in Ukraine has called any and all non-essential personnel in the Kakhova Consulate back to Kiev in case the Russian’s took any more actions against southern Ukraine. As of now the consulate has been put on high alert with several different means of escape. It has been a busy few days at both the embassy in Kiev and the consulate as they prepare for potential conflict. Kakhova at one point had a large number of ethic swedes, and despite that dwindling population the Swedish government has decided to maintain a connection to the area. Back in the days when Sweden was a major European power there were several attempts to ally the two nations. Sweden also is heavily invested in Ukrainian business. Swedish banks have started to show growing interest in the Ukrainian economy. Sweden has also supported Ukraine's attempts to join the European Union.

"General, what exactly are you suggesting we do?" asked the Prime Minister.
"Well we sure as hell need to do more than tell the Russians that they are free to do as they please in Ukraine. It'll be the Sudetenland all over again. Continue down the path you laid out and Finland may be the next target. Then what would stop them from taking the Baltic states. We need to be in constant contact with our neighbors in the Nordic Council, and stay in contact with Ukraine and other nations in the hot zone," stated General Sverker Goranson, the Supreme Commander of the Swedish Military. "We already have aircraft on the move to our air base in Gotland. I also propose transferring one of our artillery regiments in Boden to Gotland as well just in case the Russians try anything. I have already authorized the Gotland Home Guard unit to be alert and ready in case they are called upon," said Goranson.
"I guess that will be a good first step...I plan on getting together with the other Nordic nations so that we all may be on the same page. A confident, pissed off Russia is not something we can deal with alone. While I am organizing that I will also have our delegate to the EU at the meetings and reporting to me directly on what actions they have taken. Our ambassador to Ukraine is hard at work attempting to rein in the situation as best as he can. The ambassador to the United States is also working to gather as much information as he can to relay back to us on how the Americans are reacting to this. I hope this will be resolved diplomatically before any bloodshed takes place. I agree with Sverker however. We must be prepared for any contingency and I second his proposal to increase our military presence in Gotland." said Carl Bildt, foreign minister of Sweden.
"Alright then, let's get to work on helping fix this situation as well as our abilities let us."

On the 23rd of March, 2014, the Georgian Legislature voted on whether or not to back the Ukraine the the event of the Russians invading.

When the voting started, the house was spilt, 50/50 down the middle. But the actual turnout of the votes would still be a mystery until the end. The Speaker of the House collected the votes and took each one out of the box very carfully. As he took the out he read, "For, For, Against, For...".
It went on like that for 20 minutes before the final tally was released. The speaker got our of his chair and went to address the governing body.
" My fellow Georgians, we know the hardships and the suffering of war, but sometimes the greater risk lies in appeasement. The votes stands, 121 For the support of our Ukrainian Allies, 91 Against. We know what must be done, and we shall do just that."
The room lay silent for another minute after the verdict of the votes was read. Slowly, without hesitation, 20-30 of the representatives got up and walked out of the room.
-------------------------------------------------------
Later that Evening the president addressed the Georgian people on all television channels.
"My fellow Georgians, we know that everything can be solved peacefully, but in this instance, it can not. The Russian Barbarian, Vladimir Putin, only speaks one language, thankfully we speak the same language, force. We will start imposing sanctions on Russian Businesses and Ministers as well as freezing Russian and Belo Russian assets in Georgia. We are also sending the First and Second Infantry Divisions to the town of Odessa to support our Ukrainian brothers in arms. Lest we not forgotten, when Russia tried to do the same to us back in the year 2008. We know how it feels to stand alone, so that is why we are helping men and women of the Ukraine, so that they don't standalone."

The Belgian Prime Minister also wrote a letter to Chancellor Angela Merkel:
Dear Ms. Merkel,
we are having a humanitarian crisis with many amounts of Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar refugees, and protests saying the Crimea is Ukrainian, not Russian territory, and we seek help in dealing with this crisis.

Although the immigration is legal, they still seek help regarding issues in their homeland, with some refusing to return until it is under Ukrainian control once again, and we would like to propose an alliance to do this, between you, the Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

Also, Belgium is pulling out of the European Union, and the European Community, as of 7 Mar 2014.

In Hasselt, Flanders, on Rozenstraat, a small protest of about 5-10 men and 4 women had taken place, with them holding up a banner which read:
СВОБОДА ВІД РОСІЇ ДЛЯ КРИМУ!
(Freedom from Russia for Crimea).

A bin had been set alight, and a firework had been let off, although, in the daytime, this was, frankly, a bad idea, but no one was hurt.

"Назад до України! Ось де Крим повинен йти! (Back to the Ukraine, that's where Crimea should go!), the protestors shouted in Ukrainian, unaware that their Flemish-, Walloon- and German-speaking audience would not understand them.

One onlooker, a local Indian-Belgian businessman who owned the streets, took a photo on his iPhone, and decided to send it to the world media; it was citizen journalism, and proof that the now-new Crimean diaspora were getting serious about the fate of their homeland.

Hopefully, it would appear in such papers as The New York Times, The Sun and The Daily Mail.... although he thought he didn't have that much of a chance, but he had sent it anyway.

By all rights, Japan should be able to stay out of the situation in the Crimea, thought Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister. But in this globalised world, Japan had to back up its western friends for the trade they provided. America and the EUhad imposed sanctions on Russia, and so Japan would too.

Japan realised that fuel would become scarcer once oil imports from Russia stopped, and so a message was sent to Saudi Arabia:

To: Saudi Arabia
From: Japan
We have decided to impose serious trade sanctions on Russia. Because of this, there will be a shortage of oil In Japan. We therefore ask you to agree with us on a trade deal, whereby we get 20,000,000 more barrels of oil per year from you, on top of what we already get, for a very reasonable price.
Glory To You,
Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan

That should do it, thought mr. Abe.
Meanwhile, exclusively Russian shops were shut down and Russian businessmen in Tokyo found their gains in the NIKKEI cancelled

Your test scores indicate that you are an open-minded progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a journalist. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a generally optimistic attitude towards humanity in general.
Your attitudes towards economics appear communist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as a humanist.
To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, a sensible realistic egalitarian with several strong convictions.

March 3rd, 2014

The White House, Washington DC

The President nervously adjusted his tie that was just too tight around his throat. He hated others dressing him, especially with ties, but they always insisted that he must 'look perfect' if he was to 'represent the free world'. Like the length of his tie and how close it sat to his throat really mattered to the millions of American voters that probably wouldn't even watch his response to Russia's troop deployments. As far as they were concerned the US would hand the 'commies' asses to them, they would storm in guns blazing like Rambo and plant an American flag into Putin's corpse and every man and woman around would salute with a tear in their eye at how great America is.

What a fucking joke. 'That bastard Putin's got me by the balls,' he thought, 'He knows that we can't threaten him with economic sanctions, his bloody oil and gas supplies half the goddamn Western World. Let's just hope a show of American force stops him from launching a full blown attack on Ukraine.'

The President glanced nervously at his watch it ticked slowly, about half the speed that his heart was beating, counting down to the moment that he would have to announce America's response to what was possibly the biggest powder keg for international relations since the end of the Cold War. He closed his eyes, inhaled slowly, then exhaled before opening his eyes again. He stepped forward, into sight of the journalists and photographers present who buzzed with barely contained excitement that threatened to surge over the top and unleash a fierce bombardment of questions and camera snaps all aimed towards him.

He cleared his throat and tapped the microphone in front of him before asking for silence from those attending. Reluctantly, the press calmed down and let the President speak. He spoke boldly, almost passionately, about how this American government condemned the invasion that was a breach of international law and could not be allowed to remain unopposed. He spoke about how the Russian Federation seemed to be acting ‘like a nineteenth century Imperialist Empire with Putin as its king’. Finally, he announced that the USA would be calling a meeting between all NATO nations as well as the UN Security Council to decide on Crimea and Ukraine’s future and the deployment of a US fleet to the Black Sea.
The President cleared his throat once more and asked if there were any questions- the crowd went wild.

The news swept hard through the echoing halls of the Bulgarian parliament building in central Sofia. Bulgaria, currently in the EU and NATO, but led by a Pro-Russian nationalistic Volen Siderov was between a rock and a very hard place. The cabinet was split, one half supporting the EU & NATO against Russia, the other supporting Russia and Putin. It was however the Foreign Minister, D.M, P.M, and President who supported Putin, all four being the most important of cabinet decisions. Thus, after hours are pointless arguing, the cabinet decided enough was enough, and that Bulgaria must voice it's own opinion on the matter:

"People of the Bulgarian Republic, it is under deep consideration that we, as the government and leaders of the Republic of Bulgaria that we recognise and ratify the legal and fair referendum carried out by Russia in the Crimea oblast of the Ukraine. The people of Crimea have voiced their own opinion, and want to unite with the Russian Federation. No one but the people of Crimea should criticise that decision, not America and not us in Sofia. This being said, we denounce all sanctions and threats carried out by the EU, and the NATO bulwarks of the USA and the UK. The continuance of these threats will lead to Bulgaria resigning from NATO and the EU seeing fit as they, so called democracies, do not recognise a democratic decision!"

To the Russian Federation,

We wish to make it clear that the Republic of Bulgaria recognises Crimea as a entity of the Russian Federation, and congratulate over this strive of democracy manifest. We also state our intention of joining the Customs Union, and aligning ourselves with you, our cultural, linguistic, and Slav Brothers. NATO, USA, and EU hypocrisy must be stopped, Bulgaria will help you.

Sincerely, the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Volen Siderov.
