Next time I introduce a character, I'll probably have it so they can be independent of Cerril. Maybe his mother or sister. Or his military advisor.
Why don't you have Saren wander off? He typically seems to be allowed to walk on his own, and I think that that would add an interesting subplot with opportunities for character development. Not to mention, it would permit him to temporarily act independently.

As good of an idea as that is, Cerril would probably be rather reluctant to let him wander off without his supervision. Not to mention Saren is in a high-chair right now.

Oh. Did not know about the high chair. I was thinking something along the lines of Cerril briefly not paying attention for some reason, and Saren scampering off during that time, likely resulting in Cerril freaking out.
@ Gio- exactly, and not that many risks; at worst he'd probably bump into a grouchy resident.

AT WORST, he'd run into something that would eat him.

Exactly. A prince would be a prime kidnapping target. Perhaps that might work. I'd have to contrive a reason for Saren to want to escape from his chair and go away from Cerril in the first place, though. Saren has been away from Cerril for a few weeks, and being an infant, he's rather attached to his father. Not his mother, though. He doesn't know her.

If I remember correctly, he loves flowers, and thousands of them just sprung up seemingly out of nowhere. Maybe that could motivate him?

I'd be glad to contribute to anything you have, I've got spare characters!
Kei might end up involved with a little sumthin' sumthin' coming up, she could meet Saren or something.
