PREVIOUSLY ON POSTAPOCALYPTIA

HUAAAARGH

Ow fucking shit my head. Who made me drink all those shots yesterday? Jesus.

Are those... bodily fluids? Ew gross.

Anyway, on the road again. Russ finds out he has cancer, gets sad. All sorts of strange shit happen. Some dude named Aeron and Russell's son Jack join up. Bonding and super friendship!

(The screen is dark, a charismatic and old-sounding voice speaking)
( This song plays.)
Rigel Three. Such a boring, generic and nonromantic name for a planet. When the first human colonists arrived, the United Nations Space Exploration Committee (UNSEC) was quick to christen it as such: it orbited the star Rigel and was the third planet. No more naming planets after ancient gods or figures of mythology: the human world was secular and politically correct now. A loaded name such as "Jesus" or "Allah" would simply not do.

Of course, human nature is not so easily overridden by rules and protocols: upon seeing the desert landscape with ruins of an ancient and long-gone alien civilization jutting out, the colonists let their imagination run wild. The human mind pictured a once great culture, wiped out by... what? What indeed. Nobody knew, but the melancholy vista spoke volumes. This people had been destroyed by some cataclysmic event, an apocalypse of sort. And so, the colonists came up with a name, one that stuck and spread to new arrivals and the press.

They named it Postapocalyptia.

(Screen flashes to white, slowly sharpening into a picture of an endless desert. Wind blows, sand flies, the usual clichés. From now on, imagine drawn-looking stills of the described scenes.)

Arid and barren and consisting mostly of sand and rocks to the untrained eye, Postapocalyptia, or Postpoc, didn't really attract many settlers at first. Sure, there were the alien ruins, but those were hardly the first ones humanity had encountered, and who would really care about the skeletal remains of once great structures reaching into the sky? The answer is, obviously, archaeologists. So Postapocalytian society evolved into a collection of small townships where these explorers would find places to stay, along with fueling points and outposts where they could rest and recuperate during their journeys into the desert.

That is, before they discovered timonium.

Named after its finder, timonium was a wondrous substance. Sprinkle it onto the sand, and crops would grow even in the driest desert. Fill your vehicle with it, and it would behave like a more efficient version of Betelgeuzean biofuel. Drink it, and you die a horrible and painful death (yes, someone tried). Most importantly, burning it would generate exorbitant amounts of energy, at the cost of heavy pollution. And it was freaking everywhere. It looked like wherever you drilled, you could find some of the stuff. In fact, its many uses and spread across the entire planet made scientists speculate that timonium wasn't, in fact, a natural element, but a substance engineered by the now-extinct aliens of Postapocalyptia. And oh boy, did it start a 25th century version of the Gold Rush.

Several energy and agricultural companies immediately took notice and landed their people on Rigel-3, only to be massively disappointed. It turned out that the reports the settlers had sent back home had been greatly exaggerated. While timonium was extremely useful in an underdeveloped place like Postapocalyptia, there were practically zero uses for it anywhere else. Those days, most crops were grown in massive hydroponic complexes, there were much cleaner ways of generating similar amounts of power, and alcohol was still the substance of choice for people who wanted to drink themselves to death. Feeling cheated, the corporations gathered what little initial staff and equipment they had brought and left the planet.

Or would have, save for the fact that they couldn't.

You see, unbeknownst to most of its denizens, Postapocalyptia had also become a test site for a new orbital power plant. Situated at the Lagrange point between Rigel-3 and its moon, this plant would collect a mixture of solar rays, cosmic radiation and gravitic energy, then convert it into electricity by some combination of science and witchcraft (presumably). Since it was all very new and experimental, nobody really understood the math behind it, so of course it was a matter of time before something got royally fucked up. Namely, the plant blew up, creating a massive gravitational flux in the system that prevented any spaceship from entering or leaving the system, lest they be crushed like tin cans on the ocean floor. Somehow, the planet itself wasn't affected, probably because of its own big-ass gravity well, but the settlers were pretty much stranded.

And so, cut off and most likely forgotten by the rest of the world, the people of Postapocalyptia lived on. Law was in the hands of groups who had the most firepower, which initially meant the small armed security forces Gazprom and other corporations had brought with them. Gradually, these turned into something resembling a police force, but only in the larger settlements. In most parts of Postpoc, law was getting rewritten every day in the wake of the last gunfight as Vagabond bands fought hostile wildlife, bandits and each other in search of alien artifacts and riches.

Ah, yes, the Vagabonds. Such a curious occupation could have never arisen anywhere else. Part explorer, part archaeologist and part gunslinger, these reckless wanderers braved Rigel-three's deserts in search of... what? Varying greatly in temperament and motivation, often the only thing that separated these men and women from regular homeless people was that they had (or at least pretended to have) some sort of scientific interest in the alien ruins dotting the landscape. They were wild, unpredictable and often feared by "decent" folk, with tales of their exploits told at campfires and dingy bars all across the planet. Of course every Postapocalyptian child wanted to become one when they grew up. People kept their distance out of the respect--

"Sev... Hiram. I'm pulling over, I gotta take a dump. I gotta take a dump something awful... wait, it's gone. Huh.
Well, maybe not out of respect.

Anna lazily rolled over as her brain realised it was time to get the fuck up or else she might feel drowsy later on in the day from over-sleep. However Anna was never keen on waking up, not keen at all. So Anna grunted as she forced her arms to bend in a reptilian manner and lift her body up, then starting to use her legs in an attempt to quickly get up, all while her head and brown hair dangled in the air. Finally up and eyes open, the young woman would slide her hand across her head to put her hair back so as to it wouldn't block her view by hanging in front of her face. Sniffing the air, Anna would gleefully smile as the fresh Rigelian air filled her nasal pathways. Like all other humans living on Rigel, Anna had a special man-made bacterial colony living in her nose to prevent nasty Rigelian Aerophytes from impairing her breathing.
The first thing Anna would notice was the ever-watchful Clara, fluttering around the site, and Dahl, whose eyes were open and looking up into the sky.

Anna would proceed to grab some coffee, wondering over what's going to happen today.

Furia hadn't slept. That was a fact. She could rarely sleep when she had a good book. And a good book she had indeed. She couldn't really place where she found it, it sort of just appeared, but it was a smashing good read, about a fellow who nearly killed his son because a voice in the sky said to. Of course, as she hadn't been raised Christian, or of any religion, she wouldn't have known that she was, in fact, reading the Bible. The book's cover had long since faded, and the spine being nearly broken in two. That being said, (most) of the pages were intact, and Furia hadn't been able to sleep the entire night as she sat up with the book. She had, however, relaxed for the first time since she had left. She had let down her hair, which had been in two, long braids for most of the trip, and it was all mangled, and had put on a sweater over the rest of her clothes in an attempt to get warm. But as the sun rose over the horizon of Rigel Three, Furia knew that it was time to get back to business. With large bags under each of her eyes, she rebraided her hair, as it was a lot easier to take care of it if it wasn't all sandy and tangled, and took off her sweater, packing it into her bag.

Walking out into the fresh air of Rigel Three, the day was already heating up. It was a miracle Furia's skin wasn't as dark as the sand that she stood in. The thought passed through her head as she saw Anna and Clara already up, and the rest of the crew either still asleep or goggy, at best.
Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland, in search for our better selves?
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

Yawning and feeling a slick creek in her neck & back, Sev stretched out her limbs, with Shammy on her stomach as though it had been waiting on her to wake up. She hugged the dinosaur, turning to one side in an attempt to go back to sleep, but the bed of the technical was too hard even with a blanket under it, her mind was already racing and despite the fact she wanted to sleep in for a few more, Sev knew it all but impossible now. Grumbling she hugged the dinosaur tighter and let out a long sigh followed by another yawn. "So lucky you don't have to be an adult," she grumbled at the plushy. Rising up, she put Shammy to one side and reached for her boots, putting them on quickly. She folded the blankets haphazardly and grabbed her dinosaur tucked under her arm as she made her short way across the camp fire and to Lucy where she left her backpack the previous night. Rummaging through it, Sev took out a small jacket and stuffed the blanket along in Shammy afterward. Coming around, she yawned again and took a seat by the dying flames, noticing Furia and Anna up. “Morning,” she yawned out.

Stifiling a big yawn by covering her mouth, Furia then turned towards the person who had said hi to her. She couldn't tell who it was by the voice, but as soon as she had turned around, she recognized Sev. "Oh, hey, Goodmorning, you." She said, dopey, and half-asleep. "How're you? How was your sleep?" She asked in quick succession, interlocking her fingers and pushing her arms out in front of her in a stretch, before she threw them over her head, and broke them apart, thoroughly stretching her arms and waking them up from the long night.

At least, it smelled like coffee, she wasn't sure but her stomach seemed positive as it (not her) took over and grabbed a cup and began pouring into it. "Maybe this glowing thing is a very sophisticated back massager that comes equipped with twenty awesome fingers," she said wincing as Sev took her seat back and nursed the coffee. "How bout you, Effy? Sleep good?"

The rest of the night passed uneventfully, which was a welcome change of pace for our heroes. No further alarms, new arrivals or mysterious flyovers. This time, everyone woke up early with no hangover, ate their boring but sustaining breakfast, and mounted the pair of vehicles with little discussion. They were committed now, and Hiram was happy to see that Russell's brief doubt hadn't planted any seditious thoughts in their brains.

Postapocalyptia OST: A Race Against Time

Despite the overall good mood, Hiram dictated a hard pace. The hopes for reaching the Glow before AA or Gazprom seemed very slim now, but hopefully they would arrive before either group claimed the site and set up positions. Who knew, maybe the two groups would fight each other. That would have suited Hiram just fine for strategic purposes, but then again, running straight into a battle would do no good for them.

The Vago chief didn't really have a plan. Russ had said he had "buddies" at Gazprom, but the chances of said buddies being among the outriders were slim -- besides, his son was a deserter, and they weren't likely to take kindly to that. Still, it was better than nothing. As for Arseholics Androgynous, Hiram had worked for them in the past, that much was true, but it was just a brief stint after getting abandoned by his crew, and he hadn't exactly known anyone important enough to matter. He just drove trucks.

It would work out, he told himself. They were close now, very close, and after the trials of the past week, he was confident that his crew could handle anything thrown at them. If things took a turn for the worse and they got shot at, well... they didn't exactly lack firepower themselves, and, to Hiram's mild surprise, Dahl had actually turned out to be a semi-competent gunner, especially considering her training (or rather, the lack of it). The Teuton would have made a great tanker, had she enlisted in any armed force. Hiram found her a strange one. A scientist, she and Anna claimed, but with the skill set of a Vagabond. It made one think...

Despite the breakneck speed, Hiram was pretty liberal with short breaks, mainly because they allowed him to talk to Jack and Aeron, who, despite the driver's initial misgivings, turned out to be a pretty decent guy. Jack, on the other hand, was a veritable treasure trove of information about Gazprom's ops, and didn't hesitate to spill the beans. Hiram learned that he had, in fact, been part of the group Andrei had told him about back at the World's End, and that he and the other grunts didn't really know jack about the mission, besides it being critical and that they had a high risk of running into AA. It was all very intriguing. Clearly there was something going on behind the scenes, something big. And it looked like Hiram's little group was riding straight into it.

It made him wonder for the umpteenth time. How on Rigel had the two factions found out about the Glow? And why did two groups that counted among the most influential on the planet prioritise it so? Yes, it was an attractive target for independent Vagabonds, but probably not all that important in the grand scheme of things. However, just like every other time, his musings were fruitless. They'd probably find out soon enough.

As they moved northward, the group passed more and more alien ruins, the first eliciting excited noises from the crew. These weren't the ruins they were looking for, though, but pretty much the standard dig sites that could also be found close to the equator: tall, skeletal towers, rusted metallic surfaces that screamed "tetanus," and impossibly tall chimneys. For the layperson, these ruined settlements looked small and sparsely built, but that was just because only the tallest structures were visible over the sand that had buried them. Underneath, they were actually rather expansive, if very derelict.

Eventually, the sun started setting, once again plunging the world into dusk. It didn't last long, though, for the horizon before them started emitting a faint glow. A confused voice asked if it was dawn already, to which another scolded that it couldn't be, it was to soon, and besides, when had the sun risen from the north? Hiram just smiled.

"My dear boys and girls, that's no dawn. That's our destination."

Half an hour, and the abandoned city came into view, as breathtaking as Hiram remembered it. It was utterly different from any other ruin. Surrounded by high walls, it wasn't overrun by sand as all the others were. Behind the ramparts stood slender, graceful towers, worn by the sands and the wind, but still majestic in the cyan glow. The whole city was dominated by an eggshell-shaped dome in the center, which also seemed to be the source of the glow.

For a minute, nobody spoke, until Hiram broke the silence. "You happy, fuckers?" he queried through the intercom and radio, so that Lil'bit's crew could also hear. "You better be. I told you I'd come through. I always..."

His triumphant speech was rudely interrupted by a buzz from the radio. Frowning, Hiram turned to it, only to notice that someone was trying to contact them via the standard hailing frequency. Trying to ignore the sudden knot in his stomach, he flipped the switch. "Yes. Hello?"

"Unidentified vehicles," a thickly accented voice rasped through, "aim your weapons skyward and slow down." The voice sounded like it was reading a text someone else had written, and had trouble pronouncing the English words.

"Do it, Dahl," Hiram murmured, muting the hailing channel, complying with the order about slowing down.

"Unidentified vehicles, thank you. This is Gazprom Outrider Group Three. Identify yours..."

"CV-R3," another voice suddenly cut the Gazprom speaker off, this time clearly a native speaker, "this is the Association Carrier Group One. State your ID and business."

"Unidentified vehicles..." a hint of annoyance had crept into the original hailer's voice.

"Silence, Chinaman. CV-R3, I repeat, state your ID and business."

"Copy." Hiram's mind was processing all the possible bluffs he could think of, and settled on the one that had the lowest chance of them getting shot at. "This is UNSEC Independent Patrol Bravo 17, investigating unusual activity in the region."

"Roger," the two speakers said at the same time. Hiram could hear faint Mandarin chatter over the line. "Bravo 17, who is your leader?"

"Corporal Hiram Dupont, acting under orders of First Sergeant Russell Gellar."

That had an effect. Both parties started babbling over each other, to the extent that Hiram couldn't understand a word. It sounded like they were yelling at each other as much as at him.

"Bravo 17," the latter voice finally said, "we're designating a spot with a floodlight near the gates to the digsite. Stop your vehicles there, dismount, and wait for us to contact you in person."

"Roger that, Carrier Group One. Bravo 17 out."

Looked like his little bluff was working so far. The designated area was easy to make out in the low light. It was flanked by two Gazprom BMPs from the east and a landed chopper from the west. Looked like the two groups had been having a standoff when the Vagabonds barged in. So far nobody was shooting, which was always a good sign. Usually.

Hiram parked Lucy and asked Sev to do the same with Lil'bit, then commanded the crews to dismount. Opening his hatch, he took off his tanker helmet and let the cool evening air ruffle his hair, then hopped down to the ground. He was about to light a well-deserved cigarette when a mirthless laugh cut him off.

"Ohoho, I can't fucking believe this," a man in a Gazprom lieutenant's garb guffawed, stepping into the cone of light, speaking perfect English. "First Jamie, now you. Small planet."

"I knew it," another man said through his smirk, appearing at the edge of the illuminated area, flanked by two AA prospectors armed to the teeth. "I knew it the second my man reported seeing a CV-R3. How have you been, tank thief?"

Hiram looked at one, then the other, his mouth hanging open in astonishment. "Fuck me sore," he murmured gently, "Jamie Hicks and Toni Anderson. Fuck me sore."

The trip was rather uneventful, as Russ was simply smoking weed in the turret and Jack was chilling in Lil' Bit with the others. I don't know what else to write about, but when they encountered the Gazprom outriders, Russ was rather surprised to hear the guys speaking English, as opposed to Chinese or Russian. When Hiram made up the bluff about them being an UNSEC patrol - with Russ as the First Sergeant - Russ would begin muttering curses under his breath. Jack was rather worried, and decided that now would not be a good time to leave the vehicle.

When they pulled up and Hiram exited the vehicle to speak with the Gazprom shits, Russ could hear that things were getting rather intense. As a result, the warhorse put on his UNSEC Senior NCO posture and opened the top hatch of the IFV poking his head out with a mean glare on his face. His velcro rank patch was visible on the center of his Multi-Cam ACUs (Yes, UNSEC uses ACUs as its standard combat uniform).

"WHAT IS THE GOD DAMN HOLDUP, CORPORAL DUPONT?!" he roared, climbing out some more as he removed himself from the IFV and jumped down onto the sand, walking towards Hiram and his "friends."

"I hope you fuckers have a good fuckin' reason for wastin' my fuckin' time, or you're gonna feel the thump of a harpoon right in your fuckin' thorax," Russ said coldly, making eye contact with the gentlemen. "Well, spit it the fuck out. I ain't got all fuckin' day."

Sleeping in Lil'Bit did little for her morning attitude, but driving it had changed her crankiness dramatically, closing on happiness. Almost as though the vehicle knew Sev's mood and knew just what to do about it. Though she chatted with Jack and the others off and on, her focus was on the road, simply at ease while driving and a peace of mind she never realized until now. With Shammy scotch taped onto the dashboard and looking out, the day felt better and better even if Hiram was being a hard ass for reaching their destination. The alien ruins they came upon kept her quiet all the way through, something she figured the lot of them would be thankful for instead of her screeching about wanting trots or gyros. The buildings looks fascinating and not like anything she'd seen before or even heard of. If her parents could see her now; she hoped they'd get to take pictures at least. Whoever built these structures had some aesthetic sense and several looked elegant and mysterious all wrapped in one. Sev wondered how long they'd get to stay and study it but didn't ask, assuming they'd have some time to do so.

Until the interruption over the radio followed by Hiram telling her to fall in line. Hiram's direct, no nonsense no back talk order didn't bother her in the slightest, it was what came after next that did, but Russ seemed to have that covered with a new side she never seen from the big guy. Did little to ease her weariness as Sev stood with the others, albeit with some space between all of them and remained silent anticipation of what was going to happen next.

Aeron pressed the side of his head against the IFV's metal interior, feeling the melodic hum of it's engines vibrating throughout the whole vehicle. He was so relaxed he could fall asleep again, that is until he felt the vehicle slow to a stop. He sat up and popped his neck from side to side and started looking for his carbine. The carbine was found to be leaning against the ladder to the gunner's hatch.

Aeron slid a magazine into the weapon and turned on the holo-scope. Odds are he didn't need to prep his weapon- Hiram was probably stopping for a piss break. The gang had been driving for what, a couple hours straight? Then he heard the pot-smoking fellow, Russ. "WHAT IS THE GOD DAMN HOLD UP, CORPORAL DUPONT?!" Russ said.

Oh, seems it was going to be one of those kind of nights.

"I, uh, First Sergeant..." Hiram stammered in his best imitation of a scared subordinate, "if I may, these people are friends of old. I know them from way back. From ScanPower." He was desperately praying that Russ would get the hint, or their ruse would fail.

Of course, it wouldn't last long. Once Jamie and Toni saw his crew, they'd suspect foul play. Yes, the UNSEC Independent Patrols were an interesting bunch and the Vagabonds might pass as one in a certain light, but there was no excuse for a government guy to dress in armor that bore bandit clan markings, like Aeron, or in Gazprom scrubs, like Jack. Then there were Anna and Dahl, from ESA, who couldn't have looked more civilian, Asef in his old-fashioned lab stuff, and the rest in whatever bits and pieces of equipment they owned.

Well, the only thing that sprung into his mind was to keep the two dead men distracted, and that would involve talking. Fortunately, he was good at that.

"What the hell do you mean, tank thief?" he quizzed, raising an eyebrow, "'twas you guys who left me in the dirt, remember?"

"Is that what you've been telling yourself, Hiram?" Jamie asked. Hiram had forgotten how annoying his know-it-all demeanour was. "Last time I checked, it was you who took Lucy and drove away, leaving me and Toni scratching our heads."

Was it? It had been so long Hiram honestly couldn't remember. He had always told himself and others that the two other Vagabonds left him after getting enough of what they deemed a 'futile and unprofitable venture.' That was what Jamie had called it, anyway. Toni had never been so eloquent. "No, I remember... you said you were quitting... and we split our stuff so that I was left with Lucy..."

"Bullshit," Toni Anderson, now apparently Lieutenant Anderson, or whatever the Chinese word for that was, chimed in, "you both have it wrong. We was thinking about selling 'er, then before we could, Hiram drove away."

Yes. "Yeah, that's it. I overheard you two dickheads plottin' about it, and decided to call it a day. Sooo... I didn't exactly steal her, I just... protected her from being sold at some bullshit price."

Jamie Hicks took a few steps forward, moving fully into the light. "And what if we had done that? It would still have been good money, even split three ways. Now, well," Hicks smiled another unpleasant smirk, "it looks like you're down on your luck. UNSEC? Psh."

Hiram was uncomfortably aware of Russ stirring beside him. He really, really didn't need the old guy to lose his cool now. "Man's gotta make a living," he said, more defensive than he would have liked. "Looks like you've done okay for yourselves, spilling our little secret to the megacorps." He gestured at the walls of the Glow.

"Yeah," Anderson puffed up, proud in his usual stupid way, "they made me a Lieutenant at Gazprom for it!"

Hicks sighed. "Like that is an achievement..."

"It is too! You're, what, a Prospector?"

"Chief Prospector," Hicks retorted with an insulted look. "Chief Prospector Hicks of the Archaeologists' Association... far more than a petty official of a gas company run by Chinamen."

Some days, Hiram had wondered whether it had been a good idea to sever ties with his two best friends. This wasn't one of those days. "Sure, okay, yeah, whatever, we can compare dicks later. But what the fuck? You guys were supposed to be dead!"

"So was you. I heard you and Jamie met up after we split, got into a fight over a hooker and killed each other."

"Killed each other?"

"Yeah, that's what they told me..." the Gazprom lieutenant who used to be Hiram's gunner shrugged.

"Well, the way I heard it," Jamie chimed in, "you, Hiram, got stabbed in a bar fight, and Toni got eaten by a Skewer."

"While my version said that you two went missing," Hiram recited, "and you were presumed dead after half a year's worth of searching came up with nothin'."

Awkward silence. "I uh," Hiram broke it tentatively, "I might've kinda sorta faked my death so that you two wouldn't come after me."

"Me too!" Toni spoke up, apparently finding the situation funny.

"You know that saying about great minds thinking alike?" Jamie smirked. "I'd use that, but that would mean calling you 'great minds,' something I don't intend to."

"So we're all here. Such a happy reunion," Hiram grunted, spitting and finally lighting his cig. "What about the ruin?" he asked through a cloud of smoke.

Jamie waved a hand in front of his face, wrinkling his nose up. "You were supposed to quit that."

"I did. Seven times."

"Psh. Anyway, the way I see it, we have an ancient Rigelian site here, and since I represent the Association here, I claim it in our name."

"No way," Toni said sternly, "Gazprom wants it."

Hiram grinned as he flicked ash from his cigarette. "Need I remind you gentlemen that neither of you have rights to the place? I, however, am with UNSEC, who, by law, own all newly discovered sites until a government-sanctioned scientific authority takes over the excavation?"

The two other leaders exchanged a glance. "Well, the way I see it," Jamie tried hesitantly, "there's plenty of ruin for all of us."

Toni nodded. "Agreed."

The three men eyed each other for a couple seconds before each of them blurted out some variant of We're going for the dome. Another pause, then Toni spoke. "How 'bout..." he motioned for Jamie and Hiram to come closer. "How 'bout we leave our grunts to scour the city while the three of us go for the dome? Just check it out, might be it's something that can be divided."

They nodded and walked back to their respective groups.

"Alright, folks, listen up," Hiram called to his crew, keeping his voice low enough so that the AA and Gazprom guys wouldn't hear. "They think we're UNSEC. For God's sake, keep that facade up! They'll turn on us the moment they realize it's just one big bluff, since nobody gives a fuck about a bunch of dead Vagos at a digsite... they'd just say we tried to rob them, if anybody would care to even ask."

"For the moment, though, we're cool. The three of us'll go check that central dome out... if you hear shooting, I'm dead, so run for your lives. Take the vehicles and stuff all you find that looks like it could be worth something in... pick parts of town that look promising, and try not to run into AA or Gazprom people. Elsh, I trust you can drive Lucy out of the manual?"

The long drive to the dig site was uneventful at best, allowing her to fall asleep in Lil'Bit's passenger seat for most of the ride after staying up the night before. She was awoken, however, by a bellowing Russ and some glowy lights. Gathering up her stuff, she hopped out of the truck, fab-u-lous grenade launcher strapped across her back and waltzed up to the rest of the crew as Hiram briefed them. She listened closely for most of the brief until she was addressed.

"Elsh, I trust you can drive Lucy out of the manual?"

"Uhhhh..... Sure. You still have the manual ?" she replied, unsure. She looked around, and spotting the man in Gazprom fatigues, she let out a annoyed sigh.

"Who spilled the bag of smashed assholes ?" gesturing towards the Gazprom lieutenant.

Aeron listened to Hiram, and began stripping down his armor plates. Explaining a man in bandit clan armor wouldn't be a stroll in the park, that's for sure. Without the plates he wore faded jeans and a kevlar layered flight suit he acquired from his UNSEC cargo running days. He climbed out of the IFV and rubbed his palms together, "I think the Gellars and I can do the part of Gazprom grunts if need be. Worse comes to worst we knock 'em over the head with a rock, right?"

He slid on his back pack, and waist belt lined with spare ammo clips and a holster. Aeron reached inside the door hatch and grabbed his carbine and his two collapsible tomahawks, incase push came to shove. He collapsed his second into a black rectangle and tossed it to Hiram, "In case you get in a tight spot with these greed fueled arses."

With that last statement he whistled for Vevec. The Rigelian creature leaped from the vehicle and flared his nostrils, smelling the wind. It smelled the AA and Gazprom dead weights, then. The two began walking into the ruin the group had sought after for weeks on end, and had almost died in search for. What if there wasn't a single valuable thing inside? What if it was all a trap?

Well, it's not the outcome of the adventure. He reminded himself, that the adventure itself is the greatest of rewards.

During the time that Hiram and Russ confronted the AA and Gazprom fucks, Jack would quickly strip down to his Multi-Cam trousers, boots, and tac vest with assault webbing, leaving his well-toned muscles visible to all as he wrapped a shemagh around his head, covering his face and only revealing his eyes. UNSEC IPs were an elite mechanized infantry force employed by UNSEC, of which Russ was a member of, and uniform customizations such as Jack's were common. The young man would exit the vehicle, cradling his ACR as he waited on the First Sergeant to appear, who was now clad in his faitgues and gear, with his sleeves rolled up and his SCAR in hand. The two men walked around, checking out the force capabilities of both Gazprom and AA. When it came to ground combat, Gazprom's mechanized infantry had it covered, and when it came to the air, AA had air superiority.

The two men were receiving stares from the AA and Gazprom troops, which they shot right back at everyone as they joined up with Hiram. Russ made his way to the Vagabond's side in order to speak with him.

"I figure you know this, but unless AA and Gazprom ice each other, we'll be fucked if we try to roll outta here," he said to the man.

Sev had moved back into Lucy and quickly started changing into something more... acceptable. As it turned out, it was nothing more than a pair of black low-rise pants and a dark grey blouse to go with it. She hoped at least it would pass as something more appropriate to being UNSEC. They have civilians in UNSEC right? This should put me somewhere in civlian specialists or some bullshit, Sev silently talked to herself, straightening her blouse first and then tugged upon the boots to be covered up by her pants after. She then quickly went out and to LIl'Bit where she stuffed the dinosaur (when no one was looking) and her laptop into the backpack. She checked for weapons next; two pistols, her sweet G36 and the knives that yet to be used but sheathed into their wrist housings. Next came her black jacket to cover the knives up and she was done, not the least bit comfortable in so much clothing, but hopefully it would pass. Maybe AA and/or Gazprom didn't give a damn about her guns, but she figured they might squint a second glance at her if the knives were exposed for them to see. For all her armaments, Sev was ill at ease about the situation.

Pretending to be UNSEC, that's gotta be some kind of bad joke, Sev thought to herself, recalling Hiram's orders. Sev had no clue what UNSEC people did, nor was she ever inclined to find out past Russ' stories whenever the came up in subject. But those were stories; it had no technical detail. Unless you're completely deaf, Sev thought to herself sardonically. And she wasn't an archaeologist, historian, or architect to say the least: finding something of value here in the ruins had to be something technological or she was about to kick dirt everywhere in frustration. Whatever the case, she was prepared and would keep a look out to anything of value (to her clueless judgment).

She saw Russ and Jack, along with Aeron, Elsha and the rest of them. "So... do we split up or... what?" She asked softly but loud enough for a few of the Vagabonds to hear her.

As they walked out, Russ would don a worn Multi-Cam patrol cover with the First Sergeant rank on the front of the cover. He looked back at Sev as they marched, ready to answer her question.

"Look around at their shit and act as though everythin' is suspicious ," he said. "It's typical for UNSEC troops to keep their heads on a swivel and question everythin'. Use military lingo too."

Soon, Russ and Jack would begin moving their heads at a swivel, muttering curses at the AA and Gazprom personnel while whispering to one another, commonly using the NATO phonetic alphabet and military jargon.

"Use military lingo? Fuck I'll just stay quiet instead," Sev replied with a soft huff, clutching the straps of her backpack with both hands and keeping her head straight and front. Staying silent, she could do that.

Hopefully.

Sev turned her head up and around at the area in front of them, the ruins reminded her of pictures of Rome in a sense that the structures still held some pride in their test against time. Fragments, debris, chunks of other unidentifiable things littered the way they were walking. "Uh, going this way," Sev whispered to the rest of them and moved off to the right, an object no bigger than a size of bookshelf taking her notice.

Leeann had been wandering around the ruins of the glow for the past half hour, exploring the interesting, cyan lit alien landscape that lay before her and taking "artifacts" that looked somewhat valuable and wasn't nailed down, nor too heavy to carry around for the next few hours, it resulted in her getting more than few rather unsavory looks from the rather pretentious and equally ruthless Arch Ass personnel, who firmly believed they were Scientific authority when it came to this stuff and there for all of this automatically belonged to them. That wasn't how it really worked on Rigel Three, it always tended to go to the ones with the most firepower and ruthlessness. And both sides were just as willing to expend both ammunition lives over it. Despite this, it seemed that the leaders of each fraction had come to some sort of agreement, with involved sharing it all, which surprised her personally. She always knew arch ass as a bunch of greedy hoarding bastards and the Gazprom wasn't much better on friendship, love and sharing scale, as a matter of fact, Leeann knew and had witnessed that Gazprom were just as capable of feats similar to Arch Ass, most of which were against her own moral code, but she particularly owned them her life. She was stuck with them until she could find a foolproof way out, whether she liked it or not. But the new found kindness was probably down to the fact that the oppressive, tyrannical UNSEC arrived on the scene, probably looking to procure some loot for themselves but not spark a massive firefight.

Leeann responded to most of the looks with a rather sarcastic and upbeat grin and continued on her little looting spree and enjoying the rather impressive if not run down the sights, which gave her a rather odd sensation of deja vu and a reminder of a little place called Govan back earth. She, like many others, dreamed and hoped that she could one day go back there, back to the grassy, luscious, if not polluted earth. But the gravitational flux caused by the power plant all those years ago obviously pulled all of these hopes and dreams back down to the sandy ground which was now some sort of fucked up reality. It wasn't long before she spotted a rather intriguing object, not much bigger than a bookcase, but what she spotted near it was even more intriguing. She spotted a fairly young looking woman approaching it, normally leeann wouldn't really bat an eye, but she looked a bit out of place, she didn't look like a Gazprom nor a UNSEC grunt and she didn't appear to be pretentious enough to be a member of Arch ass.

Leeann started approaching the object as the woman did and she'd stop a few feet away from her, before giving her an inquisitive look whist keeping her general upbeat attitude.

"Who are you suppose to be?" Leeann asked with a grin as she stared towards the object, intrigued by whatever the hell it was.

"Who spilled the bag of smashed assholes ?" gesturing towards the Gazprom lieutenant.

Hiram shook his head, amused. "Ellie, you're our resident gearhead... you think there's an actual book somewhere? Tsk. This ain't the 21st century anymore, kid. You can find it on the main screen in the cockpit. Just go to the main menu, there's even a tutorial. 'Course, Lucy ain't much harder to drive than your average car, once you get used to 'er."

He caught the tomahawk Aeron tossed at him, trying the balance and giving it a few spins. "Thanks, Damp," he said, genuinely meaning it. It was a fine weapon, even if he hoped he wouldn't have to use it. Nevertheless, he extended it and put the handle through his belt. You could never be too well armed, after all.

Holding that thought, he retrieved his (now rather banged-up) Kalash from the IFV and checked it out while listening to Russ.

Cylarn wrote:"I figure you know this, but unless AA and Gazprom ice each other, we'll be fucked if we try to roll outta here," he said to the man.

"No shit, brother," he mused. "Should shit hit the fan, I'm out of ideas about what to do. Try to stay alive, I guess. Still..." he laid the AK casually across a shoulder, "I'm relying on the greed of my two... friends here. I imagine both Amazing Abbreviations and Gazprom'll take the lion's share out of anything they bring back... and take a good share of the dudes themselves, if they fail the mission. No," he shook his head, as if trying to convince himself as much as the other, "I don' think think they wanna fight, either. And dividing the loot three ways'd be more profitable than turning it over to their bosses and collecting a paycheck. Yeah, three ways..."

He shook the unsavory thought away. No.

"Anyways, when you go out, don't go alone, okay? We're outnumbered here, and if any of these fucks gets second thoughts and decides to want your new prize, there's shit you can do if you're on your own. Sure, we can cover a lot less ground like that, but that's life. Once we get the vehicles and our pockets full, let's try to leave as quietly as possible." He tried an encouraging grin. "C'mon, don't be so gloomy. We'll bring the haul to Montecristo, get rich, and spend a fun couple days there, okay? Casinos, booze, hookers, fine dining... all the good stuff in life, y'hear?"

"Hey Dupont, you coming?" came a yell from the gates.

"Yep, hold on a sec! Oh," he remembered something, "Clara, would you come with me? I know you don't wanna leave Anna alone, but she'll be fine. I'll need you to do some readings and stuff on whatever it is is causing the glow. If it's safe to handle and whatnot. C'mon, let's go."

And they were off.

"Of course, captain." Clara replied in her robotic-esque voice, which nevertheless sounded like a real, medium-deep human feminine voice. Unlike Hiram thought, Clara was quite content with leaving Anna in situations she didn't seem dangerous. This was one of those situations. Or perhaps Clara was just very intrigued by Hiram's saying and curiosity got the best of her.
In either case, Clara was determined to help Hiram out with "...do some readings and and stuff...", which, contrary to the opinion of others, appeared as a very interesting job to do. Like a pile of shit with sugar coating...or maybe that analogy is hugely exaggerated and 'an apple with tasty sprinkles' would have suited much better.
However it be, Clara gleefully(something that wouldn't exactly be noticed on a faceless robot) flew up to Hiram.
"Where do we go?" She asked him with a slightly excited voice.

Anna, on the other hand, didn't notice Clara leave until the robot was already with Hiram, so she didn't bother asking where they were going. She decided to go look around, but not too far from the others. Anna had always been AA-leaning, but never considered joining them, for some reason, perhaps because their methods were a bit destructive and violent. But another part of her liked that. In fact, the thoughts she had sometimes made her think she was psychotics, no matter how she tried to slap them away.
Back in the AA-Gazprom camp thing, Anna appeared to have seen a familiar face.
A woman.
Her naturally bright red hair glanced somewhere among the various people present.
Anna wasn't sure whether it was who she thought it was, but the young woman definitely didn't feel any fear, for there was no reason to, really. Her old labcoat on, Anna would slowly try to make out the familiar figure in the distance, desperately searching for her with her eyes...

Dahl lay down, her ass taking pleasure in being planted in the turret seat. However she soon found herself jumping up and running up to Hiram.

"Hey, where you going?" She exclaimed rather loudly, but not very much.

Sev jumped a little, the movement of her body showed it as she suddenly stood on a her toes for a moment. She hadn't actually noticed anyone in her sights and cursed herself for it. Hiram would not be pleased at all if she was spotted this so soon. In fact, she was convinced he'd personally skin her before the firefight started if Sev was made. Strangely enough, Sev didn't think that was going to happen anytime soon. The woman's voice was friendly and looking up to get a focus on who it was Sev saw a blond with a cheery grin simply staring at her in mild cuirosity. Sev must have looked like a doe caught in the headlights at the moment.

"Hi, I um, yeah, me," she stumbled, clutching her backpack. Getting a hold of herself and clearing her throat Sev continued, "Civilian specialist hired by UNSEC," she finished with a small smile of her own. "Sorry if I'm bothering you, I'll move along. It's just," she gestured with her chin to the object, "This caught my attention and I didn't think anyone would mind if I took a closer look."

Furia had been left alone as the party split up to explore the Gazprom compound. A bad idea for everyone. Her odd appearance stood out in the compound, which could potentially damage her well being, but she didn't seem to mind. Despite the stares that she got from some of the members of the compound, she stalked up and down one hallway and another. They all looked the same; at least, to Furia. She hadn't ever been in a compound this organized her entire life. She didn't like organization, administration, rules. They bothered her. She was born into a free society, and she wanted to keep herself that way. Not that Gazprom was any more free than the rest of the shithole that they all lived on. But they at least pretended to have rules. That, perhaps, Furia thought, was worse than actually having rules.

In the middle of her surprisingly deep (At least, for her) philosophical thoughts, she arrived at a set of doors that were labelled, in neat stencil, "Storage Room - Authorized Personnel Only." Rolling her eyes, she began to push the doors open. As she was, however, a member of Gazprom turned the corner, and saw her opening the door. "Hey!" He yelled at Furia, trying to stop her from entering. She turned to him as he ran towards her. "You can't go in there." He said in a stern voice. Furia, always the actor, pouted. "But I wanna!" she said, still pouting, in the voice of a spoiled teenager. "No." The man said, his right hand instinctively going to his hip, where a pistol was holstered. "Please?" She asked, trying to give him puppy eyes. The man shook his head, and was preparing to draw his gun, when Furia shrugged. "Fine, then, no need to get your panties in a--" She sucker punched him in the stomach, and when he bent over in reaction to the punch, she grabbed his head, and bashed it into the side of the door frame, knocking him unconscious. Looking one way, and then the other, Furia opened the doors, and dragged the unconscious man inside with her.

Once inside the spacious storage room, it was surprisingly cold, and dark. "Huh. So this is what hell feels like." She said to nobody in particular, not really caring if there was anyone in the room with her. The room itself was somewhat large, and was filled with racks of supplies that had just enough room for someone to walk through them. Stalking through the rows, she soon stopped at one of them, and gasped in excitement. The bin that was in front of her on the rack was labelled "Mining Equipment". Inside were a bunch of Buzzaxes, a hybrid between axes and saws, the Buzzaxe was meant for small-scale, precision mining, to cut around important ores and then extract them. She took one out, and examined it. "Oouh," She said, excitedly, giving it a few practice swings. "I shall call you... Hmm. How about, I'll call you... McNally." She swung it again, before turning back to the entrance from whence she came, passing the unconscious Gazprom member once again. Stopping in front of him, she kneeled down, and placed her hands on her knees, letting McNally hang between her legs. "Now you listen. This will be our little secret. So sssh." She gently put her first finger on the man's mouth, before turning to leave, and exiting the room, and exiting.

It had been awhile since she last remembered herself actually thinking, Furia thought to herself. Frequently she let her mind wander, just to have her body follow suit, but neither would necessarily follow the other. She exited the room, and then blink, she was behind Sev and a mysterious woman, Sev being... Well, awkward Sev. Always the socialite, Furia decided to play along with her to get closer to the other figure that was talking to Sev, she slung her arm around Sev in as non-threatening a way that she could, then speaking in an energetic tone, "Hey, sistah, how's tricks?" She asked, in a fake accent, reminiscent of a Boston accent.
Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland, in search for our better selves?
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

Leeann watched the woman as she acted rather strange to her question, the best way to describe it would be along the lines of a hare caught in the headlights of a car, this only added to Leeann's curiosity. "Civilian specialist?" Leeann told her herself as she removed a small pack of cigarettes from her dreary, Gazprom uniform pocket, she flicked one out and quickly placed it in-between her lips. "Never knew they hired "Civilian specialist's"." Leeann smiled, still giving the woman an inquisitive look as she lit up the deathstick with a small match that she had procured from her uniform breast pocket. "I'm not bothered." Leeann quickly responded happily to the woman as she seemed rather eager to get away from her. "I'm just interested about this object." She quickly finished, taking a long drag from the rather nasty tasting cigarette and puffing the smoke in the other direction, away from the object and the woman. "I hope that I'm not making you uncomfortable, you seem to be in a bit of a rus-" Her next question was quickly cut off by the arrival of a rather strange short woman was a Boston accent.

Leeann raised her eyebrow and stared towards the eccentric sounding woman as she threw her arm around the Civvie specialist, who she called "Sistah". After a few more seconds of analytical stares, Leeann took another drag and puffed out more smoke, away from the two women. "Good evening." She greeted cheerily before."Don't tell me, I think I know what you do." She joked, mockingly snapping her fingers before pointing them towards the woman. "Civilian specialist, I'm a right?" she asked, analytically watching her as she waited for a response.

Sev was going to jump again, something she was getting increasingly annoyed with for the obvious. She'd much rather delve back into her laptop and hack into something, or shoot someone than all this sneaking about playing charades with the other meanies in the playground. Still, Sev managed to keep her calm and smiled when she noticed Furia, whose looks were always noticeable. "Well this howdy-do-mother-fella here," Sev said, gesturing with her free arm. She glanced over at the new girl whom she stumbled on first for a moment before going back to Furia, "Anyway, care to take a poke at it?"

She noticed a funny gaudy looking… something and made a face, "And what is that? It looks like a cross between a cutter and a hammer and all kinds of fugly."

"Don't tell me, I think I know what you do. Civilian specialist, [am I] right?"

Sev turned her attention back to the woman and smiled sweetly in return, "Everyone's gotta earn a paycheck somehow. I'd be remiss if I said otherwise."
