"The Capitol," Raphael boomed, the light bending around to cast an ominous shadow around him - angels were a naturally dramatic species, it was purely unconscious, "is a decently large city, but not as big as you might think. It is comparable to your world's... how do you call it? Ah, yes; Newark."

D shit himself.

"Though only in size," he quickly added, "Don't worry about that."

The room let loose a sigh.

"The city is composed mostly of office buildings - Heaven is a large nation, and much bureaucracy is necessary to maintain it, particularly given my brother's style of ruling. It is not exactly outfitted for defense; that said, its denizens are not... pleasant creatures. Azazel received his genetic modification technology from Uriel, and Uriel uses it extensively. He has created animals suited for the tasks carried out there - these tasks are monstrous. By now, the city has been filled with soldiers and weaponry; it was already protected by every magic in existence. It is fortified against airstrikes and any other explosives; that is, assuming we could even get in the air, with the Things awaiting us. The only way to get inside is through the Road."

"The Road?" Megan questioned.

"A dangerous place and the source of my concern - something tells me that the Android Leader awaits us there, as if navigating it wasn't difficult enough."

To Gabriel's shock and horror, Don Quixote was not with him. No - he had clawed his bracelet off the second the angel had turned around.

Quixote glanced at his gun, then at the window. His mind abuzz, he rubbed his beard in deep thought; he smiled to himself.

"Sir?" asked an errant knight, tapping the Spaniard on his shoulder, "Do you need assistance?"

"Por La Mancha!" Quixote suddenly shouted, bolting off.

"Sir?" the knight gasped.

It was now that the mad old hidalgo threw himself violently into the window - it shattered beneath his weight and into the skies he fell. Screaming in Spanish, he fired his gun madly at the oncoming ships.
"Then I was fertilized and grew wise;
From a word to a word I was led to a word,
From a work to a work I was led to a work."
- Odin, Hávamál 138-141, the Poetic Edda, as translated by Dan McCoy.

I enjoy meta-humor and self-deprecation. Annoying, right?

Goodbye.

Grace herself had rejected Muhammad's offers of having a nice pint of Port with him, preferring to retreat in the loneliness of her encampment and meditate about what had happened back in the library. This didn't exactly improve her mood, and she was currently lying outside the tent, half-dazed.

She had lived a whole life believing in false dogmas, spoon-fed to her by a Church which most likely was just as clueless when it came to God.

God.
The real, flawed, almost powerless God. He wasn't all-loving, he wasn't all-mighty, he wasn't anything Grace had ever believed in. And to add insult to injury, He also thought that the Holy Trinity was funny bullshit. The Scouser girl was quick to realize that she had wasted a good part of her life worshipping such an imperfect, almost dangerous being. And even then, Grace wasn't even quite thrilled by the prospect of having to live while knowing the harsh truth about the Lord.

Her eyes glanced towards the gleaming blade of her katana. For a moment, she could feel the exact sensation of her blood flowing through her soft, fragile, vulnerable veins.

Grace shook her head.

She noticed her handgun. And the loaded cartridge attached to it. Her skull felt heavier and heavier. Her mouth opened for a few seconds.

Grace bit her lip.

A loose cable was hanging from the ceiling, most likely the product of bad maintenance on Elfen High's part. The girl could feel her neck becoming more stiff for a few seconds.

Grace glanced down, mortified.

A janitor's cart was placed near to the tent, loaded with cleaning products and other chemicals. At the sight of the cart and its contents, Grace's stomach retched.

"No.." she muttered weakly, closing her eyes and resting her head against the nearby wall.

"Not yet."

Fen had wanted to return the penguin to Frederick. It wasn't that she set out to purposely steal him. She'd set him down and stood up to walk over, and then felt her knees wobble; the preceding fight had sapped her strength. All she could do was watch between the ramshackle bangs that curtained her face as the fickle water fowl waddled away. He was headed directly opposite from the Penguin Lord and Fen groaned.

Fine. Little bastard. Go off and get eaten!

Fen took back the words a second after she'd thought them. It wasn't fair to let the little guy meet a terrible end.

The penguin, nameless and unconcerned with its plight, entered the hall and kept going. It eventually encountered the janitor's cart and thought to peck at it a while before the girl on the floor caught its eye. Flipper-wings flapped as the bird shook itself out and started in Grace's direction.

"Don't kill him!" The frantic plea came from the resident Polynesian as she staggered down the hall after her companion. "Please, don't. He's..."

What? What, Fen? A hero? Your only remaining friend, more like it, sneered the dark corner of her mind. That nasty entity was right, of course. Fen wasn't stupid. Emi had departed for a time and the penguin's master was rightfully occupied with more important things. Sir William had regressed to thinking with his little head again. Daniel - she didn't even know where the priest had gone. This left the water fowl.

She squatted and gathered the penguin in her arms, cradling him to her chest. "He's not a bad bird," she explained to Grace. "He's just, well, lost I guess. We both are in a sense. It's just - well, it's just how it is. I'm Fen, by the way. Are you new here?"

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

Grace slowly stood up, dusting herself off. "I can accompany you and your penguin back to your dorms, if you want. I don't recall everything about the layout of the school, but the ISSR gave me an handy GPS for this kind of issue."

The redheaded girl glanced at the hallway for a few seconds, before turning her gaze back to Fen. "You are a new student, aren't you? Even so, do you happen to know Lily White? I met her during the exchange program, and we worked together during the invasion of Heaven."

"The Road. Capitalized, I assume. Just perfect." Alastor remarked, before staring at Raphael as he leaned back on his seat, waiting for the Archangel to continue with the exposition, because he was the only one who knew a damn about this Road. Whatever the case, though, the Demon Lord was fairly certain that, if that place was as dangerous as the Archangel made it out to be, then getting through enough still living troops to invade the Capitol and defeat Uriel was going to be an absolute mess. Potential suicide, but then, most battles he had participated in during the past few decades had been like that, so that bit wasn't exactly a surprise, however discouraging.

Lyra was glad that her efforts were appreciated, though they didn't seem very necessary, all things considered, given that the Avalon quite easily outran the red beams of light that were heading towards it. Either way, perhaps they would come in handy later, so there was reason not to have the shields around. With that in mind she simply followed Gabriel and the others. She was a little puzzled when he mentioned that there had been another person there, as she had felt something like that as well, but then, she figured she simply hadn't been paying a lot of attention.

Catching the bracelet, the girl wrapped it around her wrist just as the others did, and then found herself down in the same scene she had witnessed before, with the only difference that she was within said scene now. The black riders charged, and in the distance, the glass castle could be seen. It was a beautiful structure, but Lyra didn't really have the time or inclination to admire it at the moment, and was furthermore distracted by the shout of surprise that came from behind, originating from a Greek soldier with a funny accent. And then, of course, by the gruesome consumption of another Greek soldier by one of the spiders the black soldiers rode. That... Was not pleasant to observe, not in the slightest, though then again sometimes her monsters had done worse. The teeth-mouths were new, however.

Nodding at the remaining soldier, Lyra gave a very simple command to her creatures. "Attack." She said, and just like that, half of her monster entourage charged back at the spider riders, attacking with... Well, whatever they could. It varied from creature to creature, really. Some attacked with fists covered in fire, others with swarms of really obtrusive floating eyes, and some with sprays of lava or acidic tears or freezing bile. As mentioned, it varied. But either way, after doing this, the girl looked at Gabriel. "So, where do we go look for Merlin?" She asked.

"It is a winding path of light," Raphael said, "Solid, but designed to cast off all but those who know it well. I can navigate it decently enough, though it has been many years - it is the rest of you I worry for."

"I think we can deal with it," D opined, "Bear in mind - we're crazy. If the road tries to eat us or something, Lewis will just eat it first."

"Very well," Raphael nodded, "we can teleport to the mountain's peak; the Road begins there."

Megan spoke now, "There are sure to be security measures; it may not be wise for all of us to go at once. I suggest we send a small group of good men up first - if it safe, we might send an army after them and they can work towards lowering the Capitol's defenses. There's no sense in risking all our men."

"This is a fine plan, Headmistress," Raphael said.

Sanchez laughed, "Megan's not the Headmistress."

Raphael merely smiled.

Caspian grinned and unsheathed the talwar from his pocket -- always buy a dimensionally transcendental suit when given the option, the pockets are amazing and the jackets always fit perfectly -- with a satisfying shing! It glinted in the light, fitting naturally in the grip of his hand. He slashed at the air briefly, testing it.

He laughed and said -- though he had not been addressed --, "I imagine we won't find him until after we've completed this fight!"

With all the confidence of a man who knows his death in this moment and this time would be a paradox, Caspian charged at a spider, thrusting and slashing.

"A small group of good men? You'll be hard-pressed to find those here," Sir Nilark quipped, smiling ruefully. "Do you remember how solid is the light, Archangel? Would the vanguard be able to use grappling hooks or something similar to try maintaining a better grip on it, or would they just bounce off and make the Road fling them into the Gorge of Eternal Peril anyway?"

The Yorkshireman continued nibbling away at his biscuit, wondering what else he might ask. He had a feeling he might get volunteered for the dangerous job, although he didn't feel that apprehensive about it. No doubt a mission that ended with fighting a dangerous android and bringing down the defences of Uriel's capital required fighting prowess and destructive talent, and those were two things he certainly had plenty of.

Flame erupted near them, setting many a spider on fire. A floating old man with a long white beard appeared next to them, eyes glowing a bright blue. "Who the hell are you?" the tall old man demanded.

"You Merlin?" asked Gabriel, in the middle of stabbing a spider with his sword.

"Yep." said Merlin, tossing a fireball at a monster. "What the hell do you want?"

Gabriel looked at Caspian. "Narrative convention appears to have failed us."

Gwen too was occupied in slashing giant spiders in two. It was pretty standard routine, for her.

"Gabriel, maybe it would be better if you let me talk with Merlin. I'm supposed to be King Arthur's descendant and true ruler of Britain, afterall. In my own universe, at least." she said, after bisecting the torso of an arachnid. "I am also much more tactful than you'll ever be, may I add."

Grace sighed. She wasn't in the best mood, but she didn't want to relieve her stress by yelling against some naive young student. And even then, she desperately needed some company, given that Lily had not woken up yet and that Muhammad was too much stoned or drunk to even care.

"I'm camped out in the hallway because I'm technically part of the ISSR contingent in Heaven, Fen. And thanks, but I don't need a room. The tent is comfortable enough, and I want to be close to the other soldiers. According to the ISSR, I happen to be a valuable war asset for them. I can't do anything but comply to their orders and stick with the rest of the troop." she explained, putting on a faint smile.

"I guess you are not part of the operation, right?"

"Yep." said Merlin, tossing a fireball at a monster. "What the hell do you want?"

Frederick, as opposed to what was apparently thought, was not rightfully occupied with matters regarding the war in the slightest. The penguins, though technically under his command, were more than capable of organizing and managing themselves and had no problem with following orders given by those in charge of the war. The sole manner in which he had used his authority over them was in order to make them join the war effort, which they gladly did for the one who held their crown, but that was it. In that regard, he was probably more of a figurehead than anything else.

But, of course, he wasn't truly that. In reality he was a warrior, and this was more than evident. He had machine guns grafted to his forearms. His chest had a metal plate underneath his skin. His big toe was missing (Maybe that wasn't immediately evident, but it was a quite valid battle scar). This was the reason he was here, not because he had the command of a valious quantity of soldiers, but because he was a soldier himself, just as bound to follow orders as anyone else here.

Not that such things mattered at all for the moment. Right now, the Dragonslayer was merely pacing around the school, idly watching and listening to what happened around him, though mostly immersed in his own thoughts. It amazed him that he was standing there at that moment, not because he was in Heaven, no, the supernatural had long since stopped surprising him. Rather, it was because he had somehow managed to survive through massive quantities of, as he put it, supernatural bullshit for, what, nearly twenty years now? Back in Las Vegas he never really thought he'd live long enough to see his hair start becoming gray, not that there had been a lot of time to think back in Las Vegas, what with vampires and zombies trying to eat your face left and right.

And as he listened to the sounds of girls chatting and an angry woman shouting in the distance, he was certain of only one thing: Gray hair was definitely badass.

Ciel was currently browsing through (Ransacking would be a better word, frankly) a small demon armory which had been transported to Elfen High for the convenience of the demonic forces assisting in the war effort. There were several such armories located within Elfen High, as the number of demons present was rather large. She figured she could get everything she needed from this one, though, since she was only one person, although truth be told she simply didn't want to go any farther, this one was conveniently close and she didn't know if they'd let her inside the other ones. After all, it had been only thanks to a lucky coincidence that she'd been let into this one.

What happened before, you see, was that, feeling that she should get some equipment before the next incursion, whenever that would be, she had attempted to approach some ISSR people, but they'd sent her back. Figuring that the demons were probably not going to let her through either, she sat in her room for a while before coming upon an old souvenir of hers she'd kept since she left her original home. It just so happened that it was an old seal Alia gave her, and, by sheer coincidence, it happened to be the same sort of seal used in Hell, which she certainly abused when it came to getting something she could use to fight next time.

"Let's see... Magic Missile Repeater? Nope. Explosive Magikinetic Launcher? Nope. Magic Variable-Mass Warhammer? I have no idea what that means but it sounds nice." Ciel said to herself as she went through the equipment that looked like some kid's sci-fi fantasy with the word 'magic' slapped on it, all while making a mess of the place.

"Are you sure we should let her keep doing this?" One of the two guards stationed at the armory's entrance asked.

"She's with the boss." The other guard shrugged.

Lyra was rather surprised that Merlin seemed to appear out of the blue just like that, with no struggle to find him whatsoever. She figured that, since the others weren't doing much other than talking about sex or insulting each other, she could try telling Merlin what they wanted from him... And then she realized Death didn't even bother telling them that. All he'd told them was that they were supposed to try and make certain events happen just the way they were supposed to and that Damien was important for that, but this didn't tell her much and she didn't really think that saying "Hey, Death sent us" was going to clear up a lot. Besides, it could cause a paradox or something like that.

Thus, standing there awkwardly, she figured that she might as well kill some time by drawing the scene, just for the hell of it. She took a good, long look at the landscape before her, trying to get a good picture despite the constant movement all around, before looking down at her notebook and beginning her drawing. She was rather focused on it and was vulnerable, and things didn't look very bright as a spider slipped past the others and their spider-burning crusade and headed straight for her.

Which was exactly why she kept a monster entourage with her.

"QUIIIIEEET." A large thing made of metal with a giant fist said, crushing the spider as the girl continued to draw.

"Anton can lead the group," Megan said, "We can send a few others with him, but not many - Ciel, Nilark, Hilde, Aziraphale, and some ISSR soldiers?"

"Fen," Sanchez volunteered, "and Daniel."

"Fen is inexperienced," Megan replied, "and I don't trust the priest."

"They've proven themselves," Sanchez said, "I would trust them with my life."

Megan nodded, "Very well."

"Lewis," D said.

Megan glanced at her son.

"No," she said flatly.

"I'm not sure," Sanchez stepped in, "He might not be the stealthiest, but if there's any man who can break that shield..."

"I must say," Raphael added, "that he is an experienced warrior."

"Fine," she sighed, "Any other thoughts?"

Anton nodded. "Alright," he said once he was said to lead the charge.

He thought for a moment. You see, Anton was an intelligent man. Observing Raphael smile after addressing Megan as "Headmistress"? He knew something was up. And he knew it wouldn't be good at all. He nodded to Megan. "I need to speak with you in private for a moment. It's a matter of importance I think we should prepare for."

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

"The ISSR? Well, to put it shortly, it's an international organisation meant to secure Earth and Hell from paranormal attacks, and monitor magical activity in general. I believe it's a bit more complex than that, but my summary will suffice. Regarding myself, yes, I participated in the last battle. I was in the library team. It was also the last time I saw Lily."

Grace sighed. "Thanks for your help, anyways. I believe she should be in the infirmary, given that she fell unconscious during the operation."

Sir William nodded, stuffing his biscuits back in his pocket and picking up his teacup before he walked out of the Tribunal. He roamed through the halls, past the tent cities that had sprang up and the displaced usual vagabonds Elfen High had inhabiting her corridors, until he finally came to Hilde's laboratory. His girlfriend seemed to be out at the moment, most likely prowling around her party headquarters and giving her usual hate speeches to anyone who was unfortunate to pass her event horizon, which was a nice relief. At the moment the knight was more interested in a much smaller person than the Chancellor. Alchemical vats bubbled and steamed off at the sides of the dim lab, monitors beeped and hummed, and the speaker system was quietly playing a Prussian military march. William shook his head and walked over to the computer controlling the music and switched off Hilde's playlist, replacing it with the one he had loaded onto it during one of his previous visits. A contented grin came to the Yorkshireman's face as Brian Blessed's rapping began playing, and he pulled up a rolly-chair in front of the main tank in the centre of the room, setting down a few things next to it: some glass bottles of Irn Bru and a thick book with a worn cover.

"Hullo there, Arnluf," William said cheerfully, smiling at the tank holding the artificial uterus Hilde had decided to put their baby in rather than carry it herself. "Daddy's off to another dangerous adventure soon, on a path in the sky to fight a very bad man in his evil castle, and so is your mum. Hopefully neither of us die on the way," he told the tank. He knew he wouldn't get a response, but it seemed almost therapeutic for him. Other people recorded their feelings, musings, hopes, fears, and events of their days in journals, but Sir Nilark preferred to recount his to his unborn son. William popped open a bottle of Irn Bru, thinking it was a better to have a soft drink rather than alcohol around the foetus. He guzzled down close to a third of it before setting the bottle back on the floor and picking up the old book, flipping through the beginning pages. "Now, it's story time," said the knight, clearing his throat before he began to read.

"Once, an engine attached to a train, It went into a tunnel, and squeaked through its funnel, and wouldn't come out again." Perhaps it was a bit silly reading Thomas stories at this stage of Arnluf's development, but William didn't see any harm in it. At the very least it gave him a chance to practise various things about reading them for when his lad was properly born, such as different voices for the characters, and pacing, and so on. That, and the president still enjoyed reading them himself.

"I happen to be single and not interested in any type of relationship, be it short or long-termed. Now, stop indulging into your erotic fantasies, and tell me what we should do to this castle."

"Violently try and smash it to bits." said Merlin promptly. "However, there is an alternate route, and that is why I'm glad you're here. My friends and I will lead us through the eye of the hurricane, to poetically put it. What I actually mean is that we're going to try and trigger the recreation of the world. To do this, we'll need to travel through the realm of the Fae, I'm afraid." Here, Merlin evidently did not look pleased.

"Let me explain." he snapped his fingers, blowing off some approaching monsters. "There is, between realms, an area of pure chaos. Purgatory, if you will. A realm of magic. I was planning on soon going in through there, and then kickstarting the process needed to launch the recreation." he said. He glanced up at the moon. Both of them. The old one and the new.

Merlin felt disturbed by that new, second moon. It represented something, something he didn't quite understand, but felt was soon coming. He shook his head. "We'll make an escape route soon." he looked up again, seeing massive red Vimanas approach. He waved his hand, quickly creating a portal into a snowy land where a blizzard was going on. "Run after me, and quickly!" he barked, jumping in. Gabriel followed, as did the Greek soldier. The others would have to follow in quickly, upon which the portal sealed shut.

Once they had left Jerusalem, they would look around, seeing nothing but snow. Merlin pulled out a scroll. "There's a city around here. City of the Ancients, it's called. I'll trigger the Gotterdammerung there." he looked at them. "Do you know what I mean by that?"

It's Nightkill. He's been there so long he rents out rooms to other people at a flat rate, but demands cash up front.

Caspian leapt through the portal and swallowed saliva down his dry throat. Snow everywhere. Like Narnia. He sheathed his talwar and pulled gloves from his pocket. As he put them on, he said grimly, "Gotterdammerung. Twilight of the Gods. Ragnarök."

He took in a breath and then released it, creating a small fog of his own devising and letting it briefly into the world. He rubbed his hands together and recited, "'Brothers will fight together and become each other's bane; sisters' children their sib shall spoil. Hard is the world, sensual sins grow huge. There are ax−ages, sword−ages − shields are cleft in twain. There are wind−ages, wolf−ages, ere the world falls dead...'"

He trailed off and sighed, his shoulders slumping, before continuing, "'Then said Gangleri: Do any gods live then? Is there any earth or heaven? Har answered: The earth rises again from the sea, and is green and fair. The fields unsown produce their harvests.'"

He blinked and rolled his shoulders back, and then threw his head from one side to the other, cracking his neck. Rather nonchalantly, he shrugged and said, "I spent some time in Iceland in the early 1200s."
