Nobody knows shit about Japanese culture.

You'd think there would be at least some sort of superficial knowledge, given the rising cultural influx of Japanese productions to the west.

Cartoons/anime, you mean. Kid's shows. You get a superficial knowledge, but nothing deep. And Japanese culture is very alien and difficult to grasp for Westerners.

Offer to read an introductory book about the Meji Restoration with roleplayers, book-club style, then brainstorm with said roleplayers concerning ways to turn their new knowledge into an enjoyable roleplay.
There once was a region called Stille Nacht,

A lot of people wouldn't go through the effort.

Hold on, I know a man who is actually Japanese and active on P2TM. I'll get him to look at these ideas.

We think Japan is a giant mass of tentacle porn and general weirdness - which is the exact opposite of the truth.

We've never known anything about them, really.

Awesome, thanks a-lot. :)

If it had a few committed members, a roleplay brainstorming book-club might be workable. Like, suppose that the club read one introductory text per month, and created a roleplay inspired by it.

As they've made readily apparent.

It's a shame, really, but from my understanding neither side is particularly interested in the other - outside of economics.

Addendum: Or read one book about Japanese history per month. Imagine, we could transform our knowledge-base, and create a series of interesting roleplays.

When I was on RP Unlimited on BYOND, Anime-themed RPs were the norm, and other RPs were usually looked down upon. That's why I left, because I couldn't really blend into that community too well after everyone became closed-minded. It was nerve-wracking to have put forth so much effort into an RL RP, only for the only visitors to my server to ridicule me for not choosing an Anime RP. At least here my RPs always have a shot of success.

I don't have much of an interest in an RP based around them - but it's a foreign culture, and foreign culture is always of interest.

While I find history very, very interesting (and the same goes for culture), I've never shown any real interest in any Asiaan country, now that I think about it.

Anime is just like Western Animation: not all of it is for kids.

That, and there's A LOT of Anime which deals with Feudal Japan, interestingly enough.
