This is a bad plan.

To be fair, we almost did nuke China during Korea.

I think, if you want to have giant nation blobs for whatever reason, diverge at some point in the past when there was a lot of that stuff going on.

I wanted it to be an divergence starting with a short war(It lasted only a few days) between a Soviet Army Group and a combined Western task force an a failed UN/US invasion of China, possibly during the Korean War.

Back to the drawing board.

Everyone turns to South America for oil
A leader in Venezuela orders all US born citizens executed
Venezuela, Brazil, and Columbia become merged, forming the South American Federation
Invade the rest of South America.
Win.
Invade every nation north of South America, stopping with the defeat of Mexico
US and the "Federation of the Americas" make non agression pact
US launches orbital satellite weapon
Federation takes it, and fires on every major city in the southern United States
Ten years later, USA and Federation stalemate
Shit goes down.
USA invades through Peru
Wins war immediately (because YOLO)

Personally, I think we won't be seeing really any major changes in the world map from now on (unless WW3 breaks out). Imperialism, even veiled, just isn't tolerated anymore, and even in Eastern Europe among the former SSRs, very definite languages and nationalities are forming. While I see a Belarus-Russia union, Catalonian breaking off, and change sin Africa nobody will notice, as well as possible resolution of Korea & Taiwan, there's just very very little left to change in the world borders that won't piss people off.
