As I did my reasearch through the in-game lore books, it became clear that I had drastically underestimated the fury of the Red Year eruption. I had been treating it as being similar to Pompeii and Herculanium, but ten times worse. But for everything I found in all those lore books to be true, it had to be more like Krakatoa. According to one book, the shock wave flattened the weaker buildings in High Rock!
This also means the Red Year eruption affected the entire planet, not just Tamirel. I bet it was so hot, an Elder Scroll caught fire trying to record it.
