My characters are arriving at Balmora. I'm leaving the main area of the city open, as in I'm not gonna write about it too specifically. I'm going with this:

Straight from wiki, edited the year though. I suppose the city was covered in ash. But as I said, I'll just write that there is a shack village/slum near the city and workers are trying to resurrect the city.

Well, Tel Vanni has already been to Balmora and has found nothing there but ash and destruction. Though it could be possible that Xulcandra missed a habitation plan in her rush to get to the Dwemer ruins. Anyways, I would just write that a very small part of the city has been dug out and is being lived in, with the remainder of the inhabitants living in a little shanty town close to the river or in tents. As of the events taking place there, they are trying to encourage miners and settlers to come back and speed up the process.

That was not what I wrote. I was very specific about the damage to Balmora.

The rich side of the city is buried under millions of tons of ash, as is Fort Moonmoth. The other side of the city was flooded when the river backed up behind the pile of ash and is still under water. Some settlers have returned and are farming the new surface above the old city, but they are not digging. There is a small culture of treasure divers looking for treasure in the flooded side of the city. Xulcandra also noticed signs that the lake would start to drain soon. Xulcandra could also tell where Moonmoth used to be, because of the shape of the land under somebody's marhmerrow paddy.

It was my intention that there would be a shack town by the lake. Xulcandra sold her shoes and bought food and a pair of leather boots there. An NPC stated that he comes here all the time, not only for the treasure diving, but also to buy comberry wine.

I also hinted that Caldera was rebuilt, first by having someone say he lived there, later by stating that Segrid moved there with her father a few years ago. My intent was that Caldera escaped the worst of the damage and only had to deal with the ash plume which dropped ash over the entire region of Morrowind, which means it was easier to clean up the area and rebuild. Also, the rich Caldera Ebony Mine gives people an incentive to rebuild Caldera.

You should go back to page 1 of the IC thread and read about Xulcandra's trip through Balmora.

I'm trying to put similar detail into all the other places visited by Xulcandra and the people she meets. For example, recent posts describe how Rotheran has been cleaned up and some bandits have moved in. For the most part, everyone is letting me describe exactly how the volcano destroyed everything, with the notable exception of one person who asked me to let him describe Ald'ruhn.

Considering what has happened to Balmora, it is probably never going to be "dug out and lived in." There's millions of tons of ash on it. That means, first of all, the weight of the ash has crushed it into tuff, which is slightly harder than chalk. Second of all, to dig it out, you have to move and dump millions of tons of material somewhere else. Nothing you'll find down there is worth the work, so the returning settlers are building a new town on top of the ash.

It is possible that somebody has dug a tunnel in an attempt to loot the Hlaalu Council House or something, but if they did, they did it in secret. Also under the ash are most of the shops, all but one of the bars, the Guild of Mages, the Fighters Guild and the Morag Tong guild house. I have plans to describe how somebody got into the Guild of Mages (not by digging) but the rest is all pretty much open.

The treasure hunting that the locals know about is all centered around diving in the flooded side of the city. Divers have been looting the bottom of the lake for 200 years, so there probably isn't much left to be found, but that's no guarantee that the one thing still hidden can't also be the most important thing. Besides, there would be a lot of ash on the bottom of the lake and it is possible for an entire building to have been hidden by it, or for a door to still be blocked shut by a boulder thrown by the mountain.

If you want something really interesting to do to change Balmora, try clearing the Odai Cascade. Xulcandra gave it only a few years before the river would cut far enough to start draining the ruins. If somebody gave it a little help, the lake could start draining today. Who knows what might be revealed once the water starts to drain below the rooftops?

Feel free to add more detail to the shack town. I know there is someplace to buy comberry wine, someplace for farmers to sell their crops and someplace where clothing and armor are bought and sold, but I gave no details about them. There is also someplace where Segrid could collect a large bounty, but I never defined who posted the bounty - it could be Imperial or Hlaalu guards, or it could be one rich person, or maybe the bandit's victims pitched in.

I should probably write a more detailed report that everyone can use to figure out what one place or another might look like when one of their characters get there, just to keep the science consistent. What has happened since the eruption will be different for each place and I don't intend to define most of it, but I did have in mind a rough map of the large scale damage caused by the eruption. This would make it easier for you to decide whether a place you want to write about would most likely be buried under a little ash, millions of tons (as happened to Balmora), was burned by a lava flow, or possibly escaped most of the damage and is still intact.

Remember, the eruption was 200 years ago. A lot has been done since then. As I mentioned a week ago, Skar might have been excavated in Ald'ruhn and the Redoran Council moved back in. It's a lot of work, probably a LOT more work than it's worth, but it's not entirely impossible.

I would like to suggest that Neloth is quite unlikely to take an apprentice of any age. Master Aryon would be a far more likely choice. Another possibility, which works for anybody, is to make up a new wizard to be his master. That's basically what I did with my character's powerful grandmother, Archmagistrix Endora Telvannis, a recently deceased archmagister of Great House Telvanni.

I do have to ask about a pet Daedra, but there's precedent. (Creeper, for one.)

Your original idea of a slave market in Sadrith Mora is not really all that bad. Yes, I did say that Sadrith Mora was destroyed and that, when the Telvanni tried to rebuild, the Nerevarine killed them. That all happened nearly 200 years ago. They would have tried again to rebuild.

There would probably be a slave market there, even though the Empire banned it in Morrowind, because not all Dunmer went along with the ban and there is still an illegal slave trade. Xulcandra just found two slaves, one of them a Daedra, and has reason to believe she will find more in the next few minutes.

The slave market in Sadrith Mora would probably be very well hidden and only open to people who can be trusted, or maybe open only to the Camona Tong.

I was going to describe how it was destroyed, but don't really have anything going on there after that. In between, you have 200 years of unknown history to play with. I haven't really figured out which of the eight main damage sources did the most damage to Suran yet, but it's probably not a lava flow or a flood.

According to canon sources, the ruins of Suran might be quite close to the Scathing Bay, perhaps even on the bay. That's based on the maps and proximity to Vivec alone. I know of no other canon to go by for Suran. Perhaps somebody else can point to something.

To the other side of town, I've already described Telasero as having been completely buried under an ash flow. Suran might have gotten a piece of that, though it probably didn't. There are mountains in between.

You might also have to worry about the dragon I mentioned as being rumored to live in the Telasero area. I had in mind that it was the same dragon mentioned in Twin Secrets, a book you might have found and read in Skyrim. I have no idea what that dragon is up to and only mentioned it as a reason for Xulcandra not to want to dig into Telasero directly.

If you have something specific in mind for Suran and need it to be a particular way, let me know before I get around to posting a large scale damage report.

While playing Dragonborn, I just found some new lore books with more information about the eruption. It's a two volume set, called "The Red Year."

Volume I confirms my theory that the explosion of the mountian must have blown away the NW side, devastating everything from there to Raven Rock in a massive pyroclasm and rockfall. Ald'ruhn would have gotten the worst of it, but The Red Year says that there was noting left of Gnisis.

Volume II has a description of the ruins of Balmora, which says that "hardly anything left in town was still standing." It also states that reconstruction began within a few months. To reconcile that with other canon and non-canon sources, along with what I've written IC so far, I'd have to say he must have been talking about the highest buildings on the East side of the river, above the flood line. The far side of the river is where most of the ash and rock ended up.
