6.25 The War of Change [OOC]

The Korean war. Referred to commonly as "The Forgotten War" or "The Unknown War" in the South due to the lack of coverage by the west. It was a war that left the Korean Peninsula devastated and ravaged, all the families are still unable to visit their relatives who were taken from them at the end of the War, and both sides have maintained the frosty relationship seen at the start of formal division. It was a war the likes of which had never been fought on Korean soil before: a war involving tanks and heavy bombardment, one that had never been seen to the still relatively isolationist nation.

You are members of the famous Crocodile Company, part of the 1st Infantry Division. During the start of the war the Capital of South Korea (Seoul) was overrun by DPRK troops. Fearing the loss of the entire Korean peninsula the UN and other nations decided on a last measure plan; the creation of the Crocodile Company consisting of soldiers and veterans from 30 different nations, combining their specialities and their skills it was hoped they would co-operate to defeat the North Korean troops. on the 4th August 1950 (IRL the North Koreans crossed it on the 5th) it was decided that the Company would not only help defend the Nakdong river (alongside the 24th Infantry) but also lead counter-offensives into enemy land. The Allies have great confidence in the Company and the South Koreans have been given leadership; Captain Kim was personally chosen to lead the company through his bravery and battle skills. The IC starts with the defence of a High school building on the top of some hills that is blocking the North Korean advance, the total number of troops present is the entirety of the Crocodile Company (70) and 40 students recruited from the school. There are two tanks controlled directly by the Company thanks to High command.

This is a Character RP but a few players may be given control of nations (DPRK, PRC, USA), ask and then refer me to your best RP work. You may only ever have 2 characters at any one time. Apps are below the spoiler, everything up to this point (August 1950) has been the same and apart from the initial victories of the North, anything could change. Perhaps we'll end up with a Communist Korea, or a Capitalist Korea or maybe there won't be a unification and it will end with an armistice or cease-fire like in real life.

Rules:

1. My word is the law
2. Listen to my Co-OPs
3. Try to be active, it'll be relatively fast paced seeing as we want to cover as much as possible
4. While there will be battles and skirmishes not all of you will be involved, you may either stay quiet or post a few lines on what you are doing while you are not fighting.
5. No-one is invincible, if one of your characters die then replace them.
6. While you are not currently allowed to play on the other side, once both your characters die ask me for permission and post another app.
7. Friendly fire is on.
8. Everyone has a limited amount of ammo. You can have two weapons (probably a rifle/machine gun and a pistol), a knife, grenades, and spare magazines.
WIP :)

Now Nationstates, the time has come for you to choose your side; North or South?

If possible name your own platoon.

Name: Lawrence Holger
Gender: Male
Appearance:

Nationality: American, born in Finland
Allegiance: USA
Personality: Seen as a stern and unfriendly man by most, Holger prefers actions to words. Despises cowardice but values careful planning while hating unnecessary bravado. For him, all that matters is to get the job done and that his men stay alive. Not afraid to question or ignore an order if he sees a better way of doing things.
Weapons specialist?: Not really. Likes SMGs.
Experience in War?: WWII vet
RP example: There's one in my sig
Extra Info (background & pic if possible):
Born in Finland as Lauri Holkeri, Lawrence was brought up to hate all things communist. His military career started with being conscripted into the Finnish Army in 1938, where he was assigned as a submachine gunner. He fought on the front in the hopeless Winter War against the Soviet Union, first in the role he was trained in, and later as a Corporal and squad leader after the previous one developed a rather severe case of bullet-in-the-face. Even at that early time, he developed a reputation for cunning and thinking out of the box, a trait which won him praise and infuriated his superiors at the same time. Still, even though he was considered to be a dull and rough man, the men under his command liked him (or rather, his leadership) because when he was in charge, people tended to survive.

Needless to say, fighting the Soviets didn't make Lawrence like communism any more. The Moscow Peace Treaty, signed in March 1940, came to him as a shock. He was caught trying to assemble a group of guerrilla fighters a mere month after the Treaty, resulting in his discharge from the Finnish Army. Heartbroken and feeling betrayed by his country, he fled to Germany, where he joined the Wehrmacht as a volunteer. He received further training in leadership, but was held in reserve and never saw combat. Needless to say, to a man who preferred shooting commies to sitting on his ass, this was extremely frustrating.

Holger's desire to feed lead salads to Reds was finally satisfied when hostilities erupted again between Finland and the USSR in June 1941, sparking the so-called Continuation War. He returned to Finland, where he was accepted back into the Army, promoted to Sergeant and made the executive officer of an infantry platoon. He soon found himself running the day-to-day leadership of the platoon instead of its actual leader, a Lieutenant he considered to be "An idiot... A brave one, but still an idiot, lacking in imagination and initiative." As it often is with brave idiots, said Lieutenant got himself killed, leaving Holger in charge before a new CO was found. This new CO was one who would transform Holger as a person and a soldier for the rest of his life.

At first, Sergeant Holkeri was certain that the "new guy" was a walking disaster. A young 2nd Lieutenant, a fresh graduate from the Reserve Officer School, a boy who had never seen battle. However, he turned out to be an honest, no-nonsense leader who listened to his more experienced troops, never acted brashly and, to Holger's great pleasure, was as frustrated at the higher leadership as he was. While the Sergeant never admitted it, he greatly admired the boy, and even though he doesn't remember his name anymore, his unspoken teachings still drive Holger.

After WWII ended, Holger realized the mistake of his allegiance to the Nazis, seeing them as no better than the Soviets. After a few twists and turns, he ended up in the United States, and later in the international Crocodile Company, where he again serves as the head of a platoon, this time officially a 2nd Lieutenant.
