So having researched a little, I'm thinking about playing a Dunlander. But there's not a lot of information on them, so I'd be much obliged if you could tell me what's happened to the Wildmen of the Hills. Did the Men of the West drive them back into the mountains? Did they become part of Rohan or Gondor? Or were they destroyed, or scattered to the winds?

I'm also considering a dwarf. Would any of the Seven Houses have died out by now? You did mention the Dwarves were on the decline.

After the Battle of Helm's Deep, the Dunlendings found themselves without a focus. They had previously been serving under Saruman -- not directly serving Sauron at all -- and so when Isengard fell to the Ents and Saruman's armies were defeated by the Rohirrim, the Dunlendings were pretty much out of the War of the Ring. The surviving Dunlendings from the Battle of Helm's Deep were spared by the Rohirrim, though, and they were allowed to return to their homes with the requirement that all hostilities cease and that the Dunlendings again retreat behind the Isen. So, that's pretty much what happened to them. They survived, although in much lower numbers, and retained their land holdings.

As for the Dwarves, the Seven Houses still exist and are quite solid at this point in time. However, they've all started in a serious pattern of decline over the past few centuries as the older members have begun to die out and no Dwarf children are really being produced, as I said in the OP. But to answer your question, no, the Seven Houses have not yet died out.

I'm still not sure which one I'd prefer. Something about the Saxon, fur-clad, brute force warrior aesthetic of the Dunlanders is appealing, but I also like all the things to do with the Dwarves... What do you recommend?

The reason I'm considering a Man rather than a Dwarf is because I can't find a good picture of a dwarf, and I'd really like to use this badass pic for my character.

Or some alloy of that and steel. It's not talked about much in the books, or anywhere else, as far as my research has revealed. But Galvorn seems to be extant and impressive in appearance, even if it's not actually that strong or valuable.

Alternately, it might just be steel armor, but stained blue.

Either one sounds fine.

As for your character, I'd say go for the Dunlending. You seem to have a great character image picked out for it, anyways.

Also, I just realized that I posted before under Rijkeland, my puppet. Weird, I didn't even log in as him and somehow it posted as him.

This is literally the bare bones of an application. It for the most part lacks correct grammar usage.

With this in mind, I will give you a chance to edit it, but otherwise it is Denied.

NAME: Thoren
SPECIES: Human (Northman)
AGE: 32
PROFESSION: Mercenary (ex-militia)
SKILLSET: Skilled Horse Archer and able Axeman
APPEARANCE:
Image

EQUIPMENT: Large, Two-Handed Axe, Two one handed axe's (can be thrown, often aren't) Bow and arrows, Flint and tinder, Gold coin (in a pouch on his waist), Dwarven-Crafted Chestplate, Helmet. 'Swiftser' a Black Warmblood, Swiftser stands at about 15 hands.
BIO: Despite being able to trace his line all the way back to Bard the Bowman, Thoren is far from part of the nobility in Dale. Raised in Dale itself, Thoren learnt how to use an axe in both war and peace time from an early age, as most Men of Dale did. Alongside this training he learnt how to use a Bow and Arrow to hunt. At sixteen he trained to be part of the militia in Dale. Despite seeing a few pieces of action against the Men of Rhun and small packs of Goblins or Wargs the majority of his time in the militia consisted of patrolling place like the markets of Dale. Wishing for more action and battles Thoren left the militia after ten years, instead heading south as a sell-sword.

In those six years Thoren has fought against the Soldiers of Rhun many times, earning his chestplate as payment from Khazad-dum and Swiftser his horse once from the Rohirrm, his horse that he had used to leave Dale having died during the previous battle when an Easterling shot it down. When Thoren enters the battlefield he does so to kill more of his enemy, trustful in his axe to carry him through and ready to etch more scratches onto its handle once the battle is over, each etch the only link he has to each of his kills.

EDIT: What happened to the Dwarves of the Glittering Caves?

NAME: Gethor the Exile, son of Gorman
SPECIES: Dunlending Wildman
AGE: 38
PROFESSION: Sellsword
SKILLSET: There are few to match the skill of Gethor in the use of heavy weapons and gear. His strength is renowned, and he is said to be the strongest man in Dunland. When his blood is up, his berserker rage can be stopped by nothing in Middle-Earth.
APPEARANCE: http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/2066/mqo6.png
EQUIPMENT: -A dangerous-looking greatsword.
-A Fell Pony as his mount. Don't be fooled by the name- Fell Ponies are very large, and have hearts as strong as horses.
-A wooden roundshield, the mainstay of the Dunlending warriors across the ages.
-A simple pack, and the type of kit a rugged, barbaric traveller would carry.
BIO: Son of the great warlord Gorman, Gethor is a proud and savage Wildman as his ancestors were. He detests what he perceives to be a growing weakness and idleness in his people. Even when Rohan is engaged in battle with Rhun, the men of Dunland refuse to raid the country of the accursed Straw-hairs and burn their villages. Gethor has all the bloodlust of his predecessors, but just as the world has become more technologically advanced over time, so too have the ways of Dunland's warriors. They no longer forego metal armor and weapons, instead embracing the iron and steel gear forged by Gondor and Khazad-Dum. Dunland is still a subsistence farming society, however, living in the most squalid conditions, scratching out a living from the meager mountain earth, just as it was in the Third Age and all times after the Numenorians drove them to the mountains.

Gethor himself has been savage and warlike for as long as he can remember. Even in the days of his youth he reveled in the tales of great exploits that warriors, hunters, and mercenaries brought back from far-off lands. When he came of age, he joined the ranks of the far-ranging wanderers, fighting to earn his place in the world. His travels took him across Middle-Earth, from the West to the base of the Lonely Mountain. Gethor wears a bearskin that he obtained himself in the frigid north. He returned to Dunland only once: when, five years into his journeys, the news of his father's murder reached him. The usurper was none other than his own half-brother, Ghun the Proper, who was of partial Rohirrim stock. Ghun took the chiefdom and set about "civilizing" the Dunlending, with the ultimate goal of making them servile to Rohan. Gethor travelled to Dunland to challenge him, but was barred from entering the region by Ghun's followers. So it has been for a time- the Exile can't return to his homeland. But perhaps a quest that would make Gethor the champion of Dunland might enable him at at last challenge Ghun the Proper.

Gethor's name in Dunlendish means "dark-hair", with "Geth" being "dark" and "(f)or" being hair.

Accepted.

As for your question, they're still there, and their lord is a direct descendant of Gimli.

Neo Arcad wrote:NAME: Gethor the Exile, son of Gorman

Accepted. Also, I'm surprised that most everyone has made traditional warrior characters, and haven't utilized guns.
