I heard about that.

Not the intention.

The INC is extremely corrupt, inefficient and slowing progress, though they advocate a secular agenda and are more socially liberal than the BJP.

The BJP (especially in Gujarat, which I recently saw first hand) has boosted economic growth and literacy in the states they govern, which we need more in India, and I'm willing to accept having a Hindu nationalist party to do it.

Very sensible. Plus, honestly, Congress makes many noises about social reforms, but doesn't do excessively much. Granted, the BJP assuredly won't do even that, but it seems like a small loss.

I always find it amazing that Westerners think social equality and liberalism should be more important to the lower classes of the developing world than an education and economic growth. The one tends to crop up when the other is taken care of, not vice-versa in all but a few cases.

They don't. They support it.

And I can't give a shit. I've gone to a few gay rights organisations, as many exist in Mumbai, and none of them can give a shit either. Even amongst them the BJP is supported, even though the INC is slightly friendlier on gay rights. We just have far, far bigger issues than this, though it's an annoyance.

Also, recently I was amused when I got in a debate on a different place when I had a British gay speak to an Indian gay about his wish India legalise gay marriage - and the Indian strongly disagreed, despite being gay himself. It's not something a lot of them actually want.

A prime example of this is South Africa. It's gay friendly only in law. They focused on that rather than the real, underlying issues. The big problems.

I can understand. Still... fuck. I guess LGBT people will have to wait until either the INC gets its shit together or the BJP starts 'modernizing' its perspective on social issues, so to speak.

The French anti-gay crowd was happy to boast about having gay activitsts against gay marriage with them last year, so I'm not surprised. Even gay people can be... yeah, I'm not even going to try to give that an adjective. I'm slightly distraught, and when I'm slightly distraught, I'm prone to being exaggerated.

The main feeling here is "This is bloody stupid, why are we discussing this even another second? We have bigger issues." This is from all sides.

In India, gay rights is very far down the priorities list for everyone.

Going by the big picture? Yeah, it's a small loss.
Personally, it's kinda painful, though, since it affects me and people like me.

I for one believe in multi-tasking. Besides... education and social liberalism tend to go hand in hand when done right.

To be fair, that was pretty much the majority's view of the marriage equality issue here, and the opposition parties milked the "we've got more important shit to do" cow like the mindlessly contrarian pricks they sometimes are.

Not when nobody wants it discussed. The vast majority of the population is fine with the decision. The gay communities cared for a week, then moved on with their lives like everyone else.

The topic can be raised later when society is ready. Right now, food, domestic security and national unity are the topics. You have no idea, not the slightest, what the political situation here is.

We really cannot multitask more than we are.

...okay, I'll take your word for it. I'm obviously not happy (and a small part of me is eager to curse half of India to death)... but it's your country. I reserve the right to criticise India's record on LGBT rights while keeping in mind the place of LGBT issues in the current local sociopolitical climate and the cultural heritage involved.

Ultimately, India as a culture - from what I gather - is not friendly to the idea of gay marriage.

And while that's not really a good thing, nothing can be done about it if that's how they want it. Their ideals aren't going to change spontaneously because some American pricks tell them they should; that's not how it works. That's not how it should work. It's like walking up to an American and calling him an evil, oppressive monster because he believes in, say, eating pork.

Now, I'm not saying that Indian culture should be denounced as "evil" or anything of the sort, but only that there are some elements that it may ignore or may need to discuss in an open, properly informed forum.

Please come to Dharavi and explain to my friends why we should deal with a 150 year old law that is never enforced before we try to end the likely fact they could be stabbed, raped or blown up the next day.

This is the Indian discussion forum right now. All the openness and proper information in the world won't make a difference to these people.

Certainly. Things should change.

But that change cannot come from, cannot be expected of, and cannot be judged by an outsider. Just as I can't tell you that you that all Argentinians should start eating turkey on the third Thursday of November, you can't tell Indians to change a facet of their own culture.

Of course you can.

Precisely.

India does seem to have more pressing issues at hand.

Telling them to focus on gay rights now is like slapping Lincoln across the face for not doing enough for Hispanic immigrants.

This is the Indian discussion forum right now. All the openness and proper information in the world won't make a difference to these people.

Okay... I suddenly feel like I stepped into a landmine or something.

I'm not saying that the more immediate problems are not important and should not be discussed. I'm not even saying that they shouldn't be a top priority. I'm only saying that, while dealing with those bigger problems, one could introduce this minor and not particularly earth-shattering issue, keep it on the sidelines along with every other "will solve when people aren't starving by the tens of millions" without utterly excluding it from even a tentative discussion.

And... that's it. I'll now crawl my way back to my (mostly) secular and social liberal Western cocoon.

You seem to think there's time for minor issues.

That might be so here in the West, because our lives kick so many levels of ass, but that's very likely not true in India.

Certainly. Things should change.

I am the sort of gullible idiot who believes that clashes between diverse cultures are a good thing... but point taken.

But you have to admit: the "we don't have TIME to deal with civil rights issues because there's so much else going on right now" excuse has basically been the go-to excuse for inaction in terms of addressing basically every civil rights issue, in any country, ever. It's NEVER the right time, apparently. There's always something in the way.

I remember a thread on another Indian (well, 44%, so a plurality) forum (though English is language used, so we do get foreigners) when we were discussing India's security issues due to Pakistan's new boldness in sending trouble in Kashmir and how China was also repeatedly sending in troops to hang out in our own country before pulling them back as a sign of dickishness. We then also discussed terrorism further, in which we started talking deeply about our personal experiences with it.

Then some complete cunt (ironically, Liri, an Argentine) burst in and started talking about India's gay rights problems and how India needed to fix that stuff, because that was exactly like terrorism.

We banned him.

It's Nightkill. He's been there so long he rents out rooms to other people at a flat rate, but demands cash up front.

Oh, definitely.

The difference being that the second and third worlds are actually in deep shit. It's one thing when a well-fed politician in an air-conditioned meeting room babbles about the national debt. It's another thing entirely when a great deal of people need to be fed, when religious conflict is teetering on the edge of bloodshed, and when terrorism was very recently commonplace. (If not still so.)
