Isma'il Pasha is such a tragic character. Wants the best for his country, does it. Railways, factories, reforms en masse. But he wasn't born for royalty, and he had neither the competency nor the skill. The government was corrupt, and the money flowed free. Egypt careened into debt, and when it couldn't pay, Britain intervened.

Britain took de facto control; the Khedive declared;"my country is no longer in Africa; we are now part of Europe."

Indeed.

Unfortunately, Chile's history at this time is filled with conservatives trying to keep them and their families' hands on the money, slowly failing, but stopping Chile from getting really very far anyway.
