There's two angles to the story;
1. Egypt was promised France's colonies in SE-Asia by Austriam for it's part in the downfall of France. However, they are unable to take control of Cambodia because of Siam's invasion.
2. Siam decided to invade Cambodia and take over the French colonies while France was distracted. They managed to defeat the small French force in Cambodia and were about to take Cochinchina, but the Egyptians arrived first.
