I've got a few ideas for the pass that would explain how the world came to be as it is. Going from masked crime fighting vigilantes to the current heroes of the age.

Alternate history?

Or more of timeline?

Well, almost any fictional universe set on Earth is an alternate history. It'd be organized like a timeline, as I do enjoy the use of a timeline to illustrate segments in time.

WWII would of course be a major period in the history of this world, not only every corner of the world experiencing war, but it would be during this time that we first begin seeing 'supermen' as the result of a genetic arms race. Steroids, Eugenetics, etc. all had been contributing up to that point. Some 'supermen' where the result of independent organizations, others where not so much, with the Nazis having created what we'd come to know as the Supersoldier, however, like the Semi-Stealth Bomber, or Jet Planes such would have entered he war too late to alter the outcome.

Then would come the atomic age, and with that age would come awareness of what we'd know as mutants (drugs, radiation, biogenetic agents, all scabling someone's genome at birth). Most of the early one's would be negative though by the late sixties, or seventies we'd be seeing more of what we'd consider super powers rise in the population.

Well superheroes in the 1980's tended to be considered heroic, so I would say the modern time then.

Since it's usually the current time that lines are blurred.

Agreed! I'll have it set in... 2010. Which will be a little different from the 2010 we are use to, mostly technology wise, the world will be either more advanced in some areas then they where in real life, and not as advanced in others. A sort of Retro Futuristic feel to it, something someone might have thougth up in the 90s.

Proposed Technological Advancement read out in comparison to our world;

Space Exploration/Rocket Technology +
Robotics +
Plasma Weaponry +

Digital Media -
Internet - (Relatively new by 2005, been around for years, but up till then had maintained it's military background)

The main side effect of this is that the world isn't as connected as it should be... which is scary thought. Sure, you'd have... FAX, that'd be... close to a net. With the rise of private computers it only made sense for the internet to be made public, allowing businesses to benefit. It might not be as advanced as our internet, but it'd be more advanced then it was in the 80s. E-Mail in this case would be 5 years old. We'd probably still be using America On Line (AOL), and Mainframe Computers.

Those are both good questions. Medicine would be more advanced; like in our world it would have blossomed during, and after WWII. I would imagine that enhancing drugs would have been developed more in that world, then in our own.

As for fuel, it's possible that Fission may have been developed, though I'm unsure. I'd imagine that Atomic powered cars would cause concern on the streets, leading people to prefer the use of fossil fuels, which would thus enrich the middle east, however as in our world we'd have cold war style tensions taking place (though not as tense as they where in our world). It's likely that atomic powered cars where tried but abandoned. Solar Powered cars... has been an idea in our world since for a while now. Though at the moment I don't imagine solar being used that much in this world. I can see magnetic rail trains, and trams being used. Even electric trains, I would suspect that some models of electric cars would also exist. Though they'd remain a minority, just not as minor as they are in this world, having come into the civilian market sooner.

Are Alaska and Texas inhabited? They are much more rich in fossil fuels together compared to the Middle East as they would be easier to control.

It would seem we do have a lot to consider, since this is based on American comics... and giving some reflection, and how we can have history however we want, it wouldn't be that far fetched to imagine the US dipping into those reserves. The Cold War might have made it so that we had to, sort of like, rather then purchasing oil from the allies of the USSR. Iran, Egypt, Syria (I think, I cant' tell what the third is) where allies of the USSR in 1959. Saudia Arabia wasn't though... however, based on that map we really could have started exploiting local resources.

Edit: Though, if we do so, it would most likely mean that Eisenhower's proposal for the Middle East did not pass, and that we may have one or two communist states in the region. That aside, the US would be more stable when it comes to infrastructure. This might also explain it's technological advancement.
