Even though I'm about to start a 30+ hours a week job I'm still glad I kept a Sunday evening from my cinema job, so access to free tickets and discounted snacks even if I'll probably wait until the New Year to watch it.

On a semi-related note, if I ever decide to visit the US I know I'll be able to get a discount at Walmart.

Martin Withers?

Met him couple of years back, he also featured in a TV series about the training of RAF fighter pilots prior to the Falklands.

My uncle wrote a few things on the Vulcan.

Rolls-Royce, BAe and others who hold the blueprints and plans for the Vulcan have withdrawn their support on 'costs' grounds and won't release said plans and blueprints for the Trust to carry on themselves.

Trekked all the way to Leeds with my mate and got stuck in a 4 hour traffic jam just to see it's last airshow display. The final pass and climb on full power was worth every second of pain trying to get there.

They couldn't carry on alone anyway. The CAA rules that you need sponsorship to operate an aircraft like that, and they don't have the sponsorship any more.

Right, so remember last week how I was bitching about the historical accuracy of Home Fires while being grateful that the PC Brigade hadn't gotten its filthy paws on it?

"The new schoolteacher, she's a lesbian!"

And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that a wartime RAF airfield would have a "Welcome to RAF *insert name here*" sign at the entrance, to say nothing of the revolving door main gate that lets anyone onto the base.

Openly? Did no one see The Imitation Game? It made the 1940's stance on homosexuality rather clear...

Also, no. They would not. That is literally the last thing you'd have outside an RAF station. And it's not like the removal of signs/town names to confuse German invaders is a little known fact, either.

Not openly, but her and her visiting girlfriend were acting a bit indiscreet while waiting for the bus to arrive...

The funny part is that the girlfriend was there to try and talk her into hopping onto the next boat to America so that they could live freely as lesbians. That's not how 1940s America works. That's not how any of this works!
Also, no. They would not. That is literally the last thing you'd have outside an RAF station. And it's not like the removal of signs/town names to confuse German invaders is a little known fact, either.

This episode was set in February 1940, and they were just getting around to painting over the road signs and setting up an air raid shelter.
Of course, painting over an embossed road sign instead of removing it is going to do jack shit to confuse the enemy, because you can still read raised letters...

I really don't think that movie deserved Best Screenplay - interesting RL story, boring as hell movie. If Keira hadn't been in it, it would have basically been a total loss.

Crazy, balls-out sexual libertinism on that scale was a pretty novel thing in the mid/late-'70s.
By the standards of today, of course, RHPS is about as edgy and freaky as a glass of milk before bed at 9 PM sharp.

see to me well. I spent more time wondering what combination of LSD PCP and crystal meth one would need to recreate the directors thought process, and also the "actors" lack of acting skills.

ALL PASSES MUST BE SHOWN AT GATE.
ALL PERSONS WITHOUT PASSES OBVIOUSLY NEED NOT SHOW PASSES AT GATE, THAT WOULD BE SILLY.

Today Vulcan XH558 will fly her final 15 minutes of flight before she makes her final landing and is grounded for good.

Then the Vulcan Howl will fade into history on this grey and dismal day. :(

True. But even by today's standards, its so bad its good. Plus, its more or less part of the queer media canon. To say nothing of the fact that the songs are catchy as hell. And you can't forget audience participation.
