EDIT: Guys, I'm sorry - I'm cripplingly tired tonight, and ES is running me ragged - I've got this massive post to finish, three apps for new chars for the next operation to finish, the OP for the operation to write...and I'm on almost no sleep.
This is probably going to have to get done tomorrow.
My apologies.

My Dear Mary,
It has been some time since I have written you but facilities for mailing of letters is rather limited, especially due to the Krauts (forgive my language) sinking every little thing they see on the Atlantic. I suppose you'll get this some time early this spring and, if I'm lucky, I'll get an answer by June. I remember that today is the 20th and that it is also your birthday. The best I can do is to write a letter to you on your special day, and say Happy Birthday.
I had quite a lot of trouble from the mail clerks getting your last letter but I would do the same thing gladly if I thought I would get another tonight. It's even more trouble getting the letters to you. The censors go through every little thing here, and frankly I won't be surprised if this entire letter is unreadable because of black markings crossing over every single word.
I believe I told you in my last letter that I was being considered for a transfer away from 71 Squadron. Well, I'm going to let you know that I've just recently been posted to 319 Squadron. It's an elite squadron that's supposed to deal in symmetric and asymmetric warfare, a unit that's supposed to work on both the air and on the ground.. The squadron is incredibly complex, there are rumors that command plans to expand our capabilities to sea! These are just rumors, of course, but still. My posting to this squadron means I'm now not just in the RAF, but in the SOE, which is basically a sabotage and covert operations group. Oh, how I'm overjoyed at even being considered for this assignment!
And it's not just Brits in 319, there's pilots from all nationalities! We've got 6 Britons, including Capt. Page, the squadron leader, a South African, a Rusky, a Pole, a Swede, and 4 Americans. It's certainly a mixed bunch! During the last operation, me and the Swede, who's name is Vegesacke, me and him both took to the sky, me in a Hurricane and him in a Spitfire, we blasted the heck out of some Me-109s who were attacking a captured Junkers ttransport which the rest of the the 319 operatives were on! It was incredible, especially since we both had just hours before arrived at Tempsford, our home-base.
I would certainly love to show you some of the beautiful places around here. I can't tell you all as I can't express myself in such terms. The country is lovely without doubt, but deliver me from the conditions under which these people live, all the bombings and everything, all the British boys dying in Africa, and the possibility remains of a German invasion. However, when we've won this war, when it's all over, i'll bring you here and show you the beauties of it.
Well, I have to go, something about a special briefing. Don't be surprised or feel hurt if my letters are short. There is so much we can't say that I usually tell you about and then conditions for writing of letters are going to be decidedly poor, I am afraid. I will write all that I can and as often as possible and I hope that you get them all. I wish you all sorts of good luck and happiness for your birthday. This seems like an inconsistency as you may get this in a month or two, but I am sure you know my thoughts of you tonight. I salute you, with all the honor of a military salute. So, goodnight to you, Mary, happy birthday, and may God's blessing rest upon you.
With sincerest love, Your own F/O, Andrew

Royal Marine and Guards drill instructors would have made them capable. SOE Commando (and presumably fieldcraft) training makes them absolute badasses. Considering some of the outrageously audacious things that the SOE managed to pull off and the ridiculous things they had the capability to do, these are people with whom it is inadvisable to fuck.

The Royal Marine and Guards drill instructors thing is fact, they trained up the RAF Regiment's first batch of drill instructors and recruits.
The SOE/Commando training makes sense given Excalibur's operations.

...I get the feeling that Carter might be getting some rather unpleasant attention from SOE/SIS/MI5 if he keeps writing letters like that
