I just realized I can edit the Tempsford thread title.
So the Tempsford thread can actually morph into the ship thread and back!

EDIT: Guys, I'm sorry - I'm cripplingly tired tonight, and ES is running me ragged - I've got this massive post to finish, three apps for new chars for the next operation to finish, the OP for the operation to write...and I'm on almost no sleep.
This is probably going to have to get done tomorrow.
My apologies.

Bit early for this but what the heck.

Name: 2319 Independent Rifle Flight RAF Regiment
Age: Founded 1st February 1942
Rank: Flight (equivalent in size to an army platoon)
Physical Description/Picture: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/ma ... flight.png
Country of Origin: Britain
Flight/Flight Combat Experience (MANDATORY): They're in the RAF for starters, they've previously manned Anti-Air guns and have been flown about in transport planes.
Ground Combat Experience: They've been put through their paces by Royal Marine and Guards Division drill instructors, then put through the Commando training course by the SOE.
Specialties (air or ground - communications, demolitions, disguises, languages, etc.): Airfield defence, ground combat and tactical air control.
Weapons of Choice: Lee-Enfield, Bren gun, Sten gun, 2-inch mortar, 3-inch mortar and Lewis/Vickers .303 machine guns on anti-aircraft mountings.
RP Experience: Key and integral part of Excalibur. :P
Personal History/Bio (more than one line please): Some after the disastrous campaigns in France and Norway in 1940 the RAF began to question the pre-war agreement of having the Army defend it's installations, primarily because time and again it was proven that the Army had it's own priorities and that often meant drawing away units from airfield defence to fight on the front-line. The RAF badgered the War Office for a solution to this problem and with none forthcoming the RAF decided to make it's own solution, a number of aircrafthands were hastily remustered to the ground defence role and given vintage WW1 era machine guns to which to defend vital RAF bases with.

This, unsurprisingly, was found more than wanting as the war progressed.

Things came to ahead after the double disasters that were the 1941 Greece campaign and the Fall of Crete when it became clear that something had to be done, an inquiry was founded and several months later concluded that the RAF needed it's own airfield defence corps. During the latter half of 1941 the RAF's existing airfield defence squadron were brought up to a much higher standard and then merged in December 1941 to form the RAF Regiment, this was made official on 1st February 1942 when the newly formed Regiment was granted a Royal Warrant.

The SOE had been following events and in mid-1941 had convinced both the Air Ministry and War Office to agree to adapt one of the RAF's ground defence squadrons to support Excalibur squadron's operations, the newly formed unit was named 319 Independent Rifle Flight. After the founding of the RAF Regiment it become 2319 Independent Rifle Flight RAF Regiment when the RAF's pre-existing ground defence squadrons had 2000 added to their numbers.

January 21st, 1941
F/O Andrew Carter
RAF Tempsford, Bedfordshire, UK

Mary Jane Arnolds
1183 Keokuk Circuit
Bullfrog, North Dakota, USA

My Dear Mary,

It has been some time since I have written you but facilities for mailing of letters is rather limited, especially due to the Krauts (forgive my language) sinking every little thing they see on the Atlantic. I suppose you'll get this some time early this spring and, if I'm lucky, I'll get an answer by June. I remember that today is the 20th and that it is also your birthday. The best I can do is to write a letter to you on your special day, and say Happy Birthday.

I had quite a lot of trouble from the mail clerks getting your last letter but I would do the same thing gladly if I thought I would get another tonight. It's even more trouble getting the letters to you. The censors go through every little thing here, and frankly I won't be surprised if this entire letter is unreadable because of black markings crossing over every single word.

I believe I told you in my last letter that I was being considered for a transfer away from 71 Squadron. Well, I'm going to let you know that I've just recently been posted to 319 Squadron. It's an elite squadron that's supposed to deal in symmetric and asymmetric warfare, a unit that's supposed to work on both the air and on the ground.. The squadron is incredibly complex, there are rumors that command plans to expand our capabilities to sea! These are just rumors, of course, but still. My posting to this squadron means I'm now not just in the RAF, but in the SOE, which is basically a sabotage and covert operations group. Oh, how I'm overjoyed at even being considered for this assignment!

And it's not just Brits in 319, there's pilots from all nationalities! We've got 6 Britons, including Capt. Page, the squadron leader, a South African, a Rusky, a Pole, a Swede, and 4 Americans. It's certainly a mixed bunch! During the last operation, me and the Swede, who's name is Vegesacke, me and him both took to the sky, me in a Hurricane and him in a Spitfire, we blasted the heck out of some Me-109s who were attacking a captured Junkers ttransport which the rest of the the 319 operatives were on! It was incredible, especially since we both had just hours before arrived at Tempsford, our home-base.

I would certainly love to show you some of the beautiful places around here. I can't tell you all as I can't express myself in such terms. The country is lovely without doubt, but deliver me from the conditions under which these people live, all the bombings and everything, all the British boys dying in Africa, and the possibility remains of a German invasion. However, when we've won this war, when it's all over, i'll bring you here and show you the beauties of it.

Well, I have to go, something about a special briefing. Don't be surprised or feel hurt if my letters are short. There is so much we can't say that I usually tell you about and then conditions for writing of letters are going to be decidedly poor, I am afraid. I will write all that I can and as often as possible and I hope that you get them all. I wish you all sorts of good luck and happiness for your birthday. This seems like an inconsistency as you may get this in a month or two, but I am sure you know my thoughts of you tonight. I salute you, with all the honor of a military salute. So, goodnight to you, Mary, happy birthday, and may God's blessing rest upon you.

With sincerest love, Your own F/O, Andrew

Royal Marine and Guards drill instructors would have made them capable. SOE Commando (and presumably fieldcraft) training makes them absolute badasses. Considering some of the outrageously audacious things that the SOE managed to pull off and the ridiculous things they had the capability to do, these are people with whom it is inadvisable to fuck.

The Royal Marine and Guards drill instructors thing is fact, they trained up the RAF Regiment's first batch of drill instructors and recruits.

The SOE/Commando training makes sense given Excalibur's operations.

Actually CTC Inveraray makes more sense since RAF Regiment units trained there in addition to the RAF Servicing Commandos.
