At this rate, the "weapons of choice" section may as well say "one in each caliber"...

It kinda sucks starting in 1939 w/r/t weapons, because there just weren't that many to choose from at that point. There isn't much you can do in thr way of weapons of choice when there's two rifles and one SMG and so on.

Well if you limit it to service weapons/cartridges, then you do have a limited pool to choose from. Civilian models, on the other hand...

Personal History/Bio (more than one line please):

Harry White was born August 4th, 1894, in Hampshire. He was born to a well to do, upper class, family, who owned a small estate to the west of Winchester. He attended Eton College at 13 and graduated shortly after his 18th birthday. All the while, the clouds of war had been gathering over Europe and it was at about this time that the storm was beginning to break. This was not lost on the teenage White, who'd taken a keen interest in politics during the latter stages of his education. Barely a week after leaving Eton, he volunteered as an Officer in the British Army- much to the chagrin of his parents, who threatened to disown him if he continued down career path that they believed to be unfitting to his station.

Shortly after war was declared, White found himself at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and eventually was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Hampshire Regiment. He arrived in France just before the end of 1914, and saw his first action at the Battle of Messines. Later, he would see action at the Second Battle of Ypres, and sustained minor wounds in early 1916. Whilst recovering from his wounds, he met an RFC officer. Here his interest in flight was piqued, and thus he applied for a transfer to the Royal Flying Corps. His transfer request was accepted and, after receiving basic training, he was posted to the newly formed No. 19 Squadron at Savy, France. In this posting he spent the rest of the war, and proved himself a gifted pilot with a knack for aerial gunnery. Whilst flying Spad S.VII and later the Sopwith Dolphin, White managed to tally 27 kills before the end of hostilities. He stayed in the newly formed Royal Air Force until being demobbed in 1919, and was almost immediately approached by the Sopwith Aviation Company and offered a position as a test pilot. He accepted and flew for Sopwith until it was bought by Harry Hawker, and formed into H.G. Hawker Engineering - later Hawker Aircraft. He stayed in the job for almost twenty years, accruing thousands of flight hours and becoming one of the most experienced pilots in the country. The circumstances of his birth, his distinguished military record and his long career as a test pilot has allowed him to develop a relationship with the very highest echelons of the RAF.

Now the clouds are gathering over Europe again, and a secret unit is being formed to combat the storm when it breaks. White is pushing fifty years old, but he was once a keen warrior and is still an expert aviator. As such, the Air Ministry has offered him his old rank of Flight Lieutenant back, and dangled an impressive salary - a tempting offer for a man with wife and child to support. Thus he finds himself putting the uniform on once more, almost 20 years after he took it off. He's on his way to RAF Manston, to help set up (and to act as an advisor, if nothing else) a highly secretive unit populated by men young enough to be his sons.

Accepted because duh.
Well, that was easy.

While I may not be introducing any new characters in this go-round (except for Muller, I guess, and I don't think he'll get an app), I think I may try restructuring the summation of their backstories. A few paragraphs is good; I don't need to be maxing out the damn character limit every time.

Personal History/Bio (more than one line please):

Patrick Henshaw was born February 6th 1917 in the English county of Norfolk, a county with strong links to the sea and had produced the likes of Lord Horatio Nelson. Patrick's family had always maintained a strong naval tradition with the eldest son joining the Senior Service, which Patrick's elder brother Richard did via a cadetship. Being the younger son Patrick had a greater degree of choice, though that was after he had completed his education at the Norwich School. After a tour of the Continent in 1934 he eventually decided to join the Royal Marines as an officer, possibly influenced by an uncle on his mother's side who was a Marine in the Great War.

He spent a couple of years on general service embarked on HMS Orion mostly off the coast of Spain during the Civil War, it was during this time he became interested in flying. Patrick started out with assisting in the launch of the ship's Fairey Seafox before going aloft in the aircraft on a number of sorties, though its rumoured he acquired a fair number of unofficial flying hours. Finally he took up flying in 1937 and was sent to RAF Leuchars where he qualified as a seaplane pilot then embarked on HMS Cumberland in 1938 as that ship joined the 2nd cruiser squadron on the South American station.

After the outbreak of war in 1939 Patrick found himself flying patrols over the waters of the South Atlantic hunting for German commerce raiders.

Anyways, I've got the basic outline for the new character already planned out. I've gotta do some stuff for the campus organization I'm in later on tonight, and I've got a shitton of homework due tomorrow, but I should have something posted by this weekend.

Past couple of days round where I live has felt a bit like this as the air ambulance has done a big training exercise.

Okay, so I'm having trouble thinking of an actor for my cynical, cigar-smoking Irish-American fisherman-turned-pilot. So far, I've thought of Burt Lancaster, Robert Wagner, and Henry Fonda, but I'm not sure any of them are quite right. Since you all seem to be pretty good in this area, any thoughts?

Right, here we go:

Name: Geoffrey Talbot

Age: 27 (at start of war)

Rank: Flight Lieutenant

Physical Description/Picture: not final yet, but most definitely does NOT look like Leslie Howard
Image

Country of Origin: England

Flight/Flight Combat Experience (MANDATORY): RAF pilot, 1933-37, including combat operations in India, Palestine, and the Far East; test pilot, 1937-39; part-time air racer

Ground Combat Experience: OTC Certificate B; involved in several firefights with rebel forces following forced landings and while serving as RAF liaison officer with British forces in Palestine and on the North-West Frontier; a fair share of boxing matches, schoolyard fistfights, and barroom brawls

Specialties: low-level flying and close air support; navigation; marksmanship (air and ground); can read a decent amount of French, Spanish, Italian, Latin, and German, though his verbal skills are somewhat lacking; able to imitate a variety of accents; skilled automobile driver and mechanic; trained to both read and draft technical drawings; experienced hunter; can ride/drive horses and other draft animals; can pilot small boats

Weapons of Choice: Colt M1911 (.45 ACP and .38 Super), Colt Detective Special, M1928 Thompson, SMLE Mk III, Winchester M1912 trench gun (12 gauge); has a general preference for Colt handguns over those from other manufacturers, and personally owns a variety of models chambered for different rounds

RP Experience: Ha, you're a funny guy, Tigger!

Personal History/Bio: Raised on a farm outside Eastbourne, Geoffrey Talbot showed promise from an early age, demonstrating an intelligence that earned him scholarships to public schools that would otherwise have been far above his family’s means and social standing, where he soon developed an interest in history and joined the Cadets. As soon as he was old enough to begin driving his father’s Austin Seven, he started displaying an affinity for driving fast, much to the displeasure of his mother (though his father didn’t seem to mind, so long as he didn’t damage the car…). Entering Imperial College London to study engineering, he soon made friends with a wealthy, Bentley-driving classmate who shared his affinity for auto racing and military matters; said classmate was a corrupting influence, for as well as serving as Talbot’s partner in racing fast cars, he also introduced Talbot to the world of dance bands, heavy drinking, and fast women. Somewhat unsurprisingly, while at university the two of them signed up for flying lessons as well as the Officers’ Training Corps.

After receiving his degree, Talbot joined the RAF as a direct entry officer; while the story among his university peers is that Talbot joined the RAF to stay one step ahead of the law following the events that occurred at a graduation party, both parties deny any wrongdoing, and Talbot maintains that he applied for a commission well before these events occurred. Regardless, Talbot received his commission and, following his training period and a short home posting, was posted to HMS Eagle on the China Station in early 1934. After spending a year in the Far East, during which time he was engaged in anti-piracy operations, Talbot was transferred to India, where he provided air support for the British Indian forces involved in the Mohmand Campaign on 1935. With the outbreak of Arab Revolt in 1936, Talbot, whose previous two years of service had made him one of the most combat-experienced of the RAF’s active pilots, was transferred to Palestine, where he provided air support for British ground forces, flew air policing missions against rebel-controlled villages, and even served on the ground as a liaison officer coordinating air support for British patrols, a role in which he came under enemy fire several times.

With the situation in Waziristan deteriorating throughout 1936, Talbot was posted back to India at the end of the year where he was to put the air support skills he had honed in Palestine into use against another group of rebels. During one such flight, Talbot’s Hawker Hart developed engine trouble which led to a forced landing in rebel territory; while trying to make repairs, Talbot and his observer were attacked by rebel forces. Although both of them were grazed by enemy bullets, Talbot and his observer managed to hold off the rebels with machine gun and revolver fire long enough for Talbot to set the plane on fire, and the two of them escaped into the bush. Due in large part to Talbot’s hunting experience, he and his observer were able to evade rebel forces for three days before meeting up with a friendly patrol; the two were both mentioned in despatches for this action.

Posted back to England in early 1937, Talbot was soon transferred to the reserve list; returning to civilian life, he got a job at an engineering firm, while still partaking in his daredevil playboy hobbies as time and money permitted. After several months of being restricted to racing cars and flying airplanes on weekends only, he received a letter from Russian-American aircraft designer Alexander de Seversky; Seversky was developing his new combat aircraft for the US Army, and was looking for a pilot with actual, recent combat experience to evaluate the aircraft and provide design input. Talbot’s response was short: yes, but only if I can fly the ship. And so, by the end of 1937 Talbot found himself in the employ of the Seversky Aircraft Corporation of Farmingdale, New York, in the position of test pilot; this position came with the perk of serving as the company’s backup entry in various air races, meaning that Talbot was flying in support of star pilots like Jimmy Doolittle and Jacqueline Cochran. Unexpectedly, the job also came with a brief Hollywood star turn, as Seversky was providing MGM with aircraft for the production of the film Test Pilot.

And so, things were going along swimmingly for Talbot, until September 1, 1939; recalled to active service, he returned to England for a crash-course in the new RAF aircraft types before being deployed to France as a Fairey Battle pilot with the Advanced Air Striking Force. Being in the midst of the Phoney War, things were quiet for Talbot until the middle of December, when he received cryptic orders to report to RAF Manston for “special duties”.

Browning Hi-Power, Lee-Enfield SMLE Mk.III rifle, and Thompson M1928-M1A1, as part of infantry weapons he preferred the most in Canadian military, though he still preferred the Soviet-made, strangely.

Probably because he did used them in the field, and not just in training.

RP Experience: So many of them, Tiger. So many of them.
Personal History/Bio (more than one line please):

Born on 1st September 1910 in Quebec, specifically Rivière-du-Loup , the French-speaking province in Canada, which experienced an unpopular decision regarding involvement with war during WW1 and affecting most of the Francophone in Quebec, including Gauthier's family, whose grandfather served in the military and whose father and brothers opposed the efforts of Canada and their conscription to Francophones in WW1, although his brothers did served in the non-combatant roles.

He went into Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf, enrolled as a student there and eventually received his degree, as well as entering the service of RCAF despite the objections of his brothers and father, though just to be a mild objections. He reasoned that he wanted to served for the nation and fight for the nation, keeping his French Canadian identity intact too, in the process. Through a series of short training period he was eventually assigned to served for mail delivery, forest fire watches, and training.

Eventually, Spanish Civil War came to the door, asking for the aid, perhaps not literally. Martin took a temporary leave as he joined many other Canadians as part of the international brigades, supporting the Republicans. Since he kind of thought that maybe his service as part of the brigades won't be looked as nicely when he returned, but the thought of Axis spreading its power like wildfire, even affecting the Canada and Quebec at some point in the future clouded his judgment over the decision with his military service.

The budget cuts for RCAF didn't helped matters and worsened it even then, and few had been honorably discharged in order to lessened the expenses.

In the Spanish Civil War, he first served as a pilot for six months until his plane, a Polikarpov I-16, was downed in the Battle of Guadalajara. Then, he was reassigned to the ground forces and received field and infantry training, served in many battles until the last six months before the end of the Civil War, where he returned to RCAF.

Perhaps because RCAF knew they were budget-cutted at that time before, they took Martin back albeit with mild reluctance. He then served again as patrol corps in the reformed RCAF.

Name: Henri Vodat (real name Marat Korenov)
Age: 39
Rank: Lieutenant (Flying Officer)
Physical Description/Picture:
Image

Country of Origin: born and raised in Russia, moved to France in 1925
Flight/Flight Combat Experience (MANDATORY): Armee de Air, 1938-39
Ground Combat Experience: Red Army: 1917-21, FFL: 1925-36, International Brigades 1936-38.

Weapons of Choice: Lebel 1886 rifle Nagant 1895 revolver
RP Experience: 4 years here count, right
Personal History/Bio (more than one line please):
The son of a prominent Tsarist officer turned communist, Marat followed him into the service of the red army in 1917. Unlike his father, who joined the regular military at his current rank, Marat had to work his way up the ranks as he fought under the command of Joseph Stalin in the Caucasus's, Ukraine, and Poland, eventually making it to the rank of Lieutenant by 1921. While originally a firm believer in Lenin and Trotsky's vision for Russia, Marat became embittered by his time spent under "Lenin's attack dog", as Stalin was privately called amongst the ranks. When Lenin died and Stalin took power, Marat saw the writing on the wall. He opted to leave the country, joining The Legion like all young men without a country.

Changing his name as per legion tradition Marat, now Henri Vodat, served in Morocco and North Africa for 11 years. When the Spanish civil war started up Henri resigned from the legion and went to Spain. Using lessons learned in both Russia and Morocco, Henri worked with various groups battling nationalist forces in the southwest of Spain. It was here that he gained an appreciation of aerial warfare, both from talking to downed pilots his group had rescued and from seeing the effects Nationalist bombers had on republican positions. With defeat looming in 1938, Henri made his way back to France where he joined Armee de Air in July, having a rather ordinary career until being seconded to the RAF for some sort of special assignment.

Name: Gareth Cowell
Age: 37
Rank: Flying Officer
Physical Description/Picture: Slight but not emaciated or sufficiently skinny to be unsuitably so, gaunt face with sharp lines. Maybe 5ft 8 or 9. Close cropped black hair with moustache and blue eyes.
Country of Origin: England
Flight/Flight Combat Experience: Inter-war civilian flight lessons and over a decade's experience flying small aircraft in spare time, suitable enough to segue easily into pre-war aircraft lessons.
Ground Combat Experience: Beating the shit out of other gangs, dockers, and cops in the inter-war years.
Specialties (air or ground - communications, demolitions, disguises, languages, etc.): Kinda good at flying. Also skilled at getting in to places he's not meant to get into.
Weapons of Choice: Anything he can get his hand on really. He's not exactly a crack shot with anything, and hasn't used a 'standard' or 'service' weapon in years. He does, however, have a sawn-off shotgun stored in the bottom of his duffel bag which was first fired in anger in 1900 by his father, and has been used semi-regularly ever since.
RP Experience: This one time I was in a game of DnD.
Personal History/Bio (more than one line please): Gareth Cooper was a rough-tough docker's son, living and working in the largest port in the world - the Port of London. In London he worked alongside a wide-range of figures, engaged in entirely legitimate business activities which at no point ever resulted in sprinting through the streets of the East of the city being chased by the sound of boots on stone and blowing whistles. During this time he gained a healthy respect for the country which had taken his family in, and also made a number of contacts alongside his father and two brothers. His Father and two brothers volunteered (naturally) for the Royal Navy in 1914, with Gareth following suit in 1917 when he felt he was suitably adult-looking to serve without being caught out. He completed his training and was immediately posted to HMS Furious, one of the Royal Navy's (and indeed the world's) first aircraft carriers.

It was aboard that ship that Gareth first gained his appreciation for flying - something that would continue well after his demobilisation in 1920. Returning to London with his new knowledge of the brutalities of war, he continued to 'work' as a London Docker, while also gaining an impressive relationship as a man who could get things done in the East End, especially using contacts in the navy at the docklands to obtain and make use of entirely inappropriate items for civilian use or consumption. However, at home he also indulged the love of flying, joining a local Aero Club and gaining enough experience to be able to move through the air skillfully in small mono- or bi-planes. Following injury and 3 months imprisonment after the Battle of Cable Street in 1936, he decided to quit the life he'd led for himself and focus on the flying while also serving his country in what he was sure would be a coming opportunity to 'cut the cunts' in Germany. In 1937 he commissioned into the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Air Force, however when the Inskip Award returned that branch to the Royal Navy, he was retained in the RAF and transferred between a few squadrons before being attached to 319 Squadron.

So, at the holiday park my gf works at there's only wifi in the show bar, where she and her co workers are currently doing the evening's entertainment.

I'm literally sat in a bar, on my laptop, surrounded by racist old people talking about how Nice vindicates Brexit and Nigel Farage in order to steal wifi and write that app.

You guys better appreciate the blood that poured through the keyboard from my ears to form those words. :p

When the war is over
Got to start again
Try to hold a trace of what it was back then
You and I we sent each other stories
Just a page I'm lost in all its glory
How can I go home and not get blown away

Bah, they were subordinate partners in a military operation where loads of people from different countries were killed through a general miasma of low-grade ineptitude and the like. It's like that was the series theme for WWI, but episode 4 was the ANZAC-centric episode.

Name: Clifford John Clavin "Cliff" McTavish

Ground Combat Experience: Basic Training, as well as commando

Specialties (air or ground - communications, demolitions, disguises, languages, etc.):
  • Taking off/landing seaplanes or carrier-based planes

RP Experience: One of the greatest P2TM RPs of all time (and also Excalibur Squadron :p )

Personal History/Bio (more than one line please): Clifford John Clavin McTavish was born on July 14th, 1913 in the small village of Cohasset, Massachussetts, in the Greater Boston area. He came into a large Irish-American working-class family; his mother was a seamstress and his father was a fisherman. His family had long been one with the sea; Cliff could trace his bloodline all the way back to a fisherman-turned-sailor during the revolutionary war. His great-great grandfather on his father's side had been on the United States when it captured the Macedonian and his grandfather had been on the Conestoga while it bombarded Fort Henry. His father himself was a veteran of Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet, but, finding it easier to have an extra naval pension rather than live off naval pay, returned to what the McTavishes had always done best: fishing. Taking his young son with him on these long daily trips, the elder McTavish would regale him with stories of far-off adventure. As they cast their nets, seaplanes on their daily patrols from the nearby Naval Air Station at Squantum would buzz low overhead, and once in a while they would waggle their wings in acknowledgment of the awestruck child down below. It was here that his love of flying would be born.

In 1927, at the age of 14, he heard the news of Charles Lindbergh's landing in Paris after completing his transatlantic flight, further inspiring Cliff to pursue aviation (much to the dislike of his seagoing father). Despite his aerial ambitions, he continued to work on his father's fishing boat until the Great Depression hit. His mother was laid off, and his father was forced to do the same to many of his fishermen as well. Life got harder, and Cliff got more cynical with it. Although Cliff offered to stay and help his father, he was told instead to go out west so he too could help support his family at home. Along with many of his older siblings, he volunteered with the Civilian Conservation Corps and was sent to North Dakota, where he was stunned by the low-flying cropdusters. After his six-month enrollment was up with the CCC, he secured a job flying as one, which he held until being laid off in 1934. With nowhere else to go, he chose to enlist in the US Navy, as so many of his forefathers had done. However, with the rising tensions in the Pacific, he decided instead he could serve his country better (and perhaps make a little more) by becoming a naval aviator. He excelled in his rigorous 18 month training, and with the rank of ensign, he was posted initially to the USS Marblehead, piloting Curtiss SOC floatplanes, and eventually to the Lexington, flying Grumman F2Fs and eventually the new Douglas TBD Devastator torpedo bombers.

Even though he was an excellent flier and took orders well, the low pay and slow promotion rate frustrated him as well as the other fliers, leaving the group’s morale at rock bottom. A particularly traumatic incident near the end of his enlistment further disillusioned him, and he resigned his commission in mid 1938. Going back to work with his father, who by now was back on his feet, was more or less the same as usual, but that proved to be exactly the problem. He aimlessly drifted from one week to the next, with his cigars and alcohol being the only things that could take his mind off of what had happened. When he heard that the RAF was accepting foreign nationals, he sailed to Liverpool and enlisted, hoping this could change something. Graduating basic training, he was assigned to No. 6 Squadron based in Mandatory Palestine, where he flew numerous counter-insurgent sorties against the Jewish and Arab terrorists in the desert. With the outbreak of war, he dogfighted with German and Italian fighters on a few occasions, earning 2 kills in one flight. This, matched with his exceptional flying, led to further investigation into his Navy background, and, unbeknownst to him but knownst to us, his actions in both services had his superiors put him on a shortlist for some sort of clandestine squadron in England...

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his son in the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through himJohn 3:16-17
