If you've seen Skyfall, the one that Bond and Q talk about is the one I mean. I'm pretty sure the name Fighting Temeraire as opposed to Temeraire is a reference to that painting.

Bah, she's going to do more damage to Nazi Germany than a Battleship could do. ;)

Who cares if she's named after the ship in the painting named after the ship. ;)

As previously stated in the above post, some of the suggested names are in service already. Given that I've nothing else to do right now, I thought I'd make a list of suggested names that are commissioned and therefore cannot be used. I'll add any others to this list as I find them.

HMS Royal Sovereign (Revenge Class battleship. Grand Fleet veteran, missed Jutland.)
HMS Defiance (HMS Andromeda, only she was renamed Defiance in 1931)
HMS Odyssey (MTB tender - used to be a pre-WWI armoured cruiser)
HMS Bulldog (famous for being the first ship to capture a Kriegsmarine Engima [there are differences] intact with a codebook)
HMS Prince of Wales (King George V Class battleship. Will be sunk Dec. 10th 1941 in the South China Sea along with HMS Repulse).
HMS Britannia (the shore installation currently known as HMS Dartmouth)
HMS Valiant (Queen Elizabeth Class battleship. Veteran of Jutland.)
HMS Oberon (Odin Class Submarine)

I was only pointing out the rather clever reference :P and also, Royal Navy tradition cares haha

  • HMS Thunder Child - God fucking damnit Gren, I'm nominating that name too.
  • HMS Roy Cutler III - Obvious reasons.
  • HMS Saucy
  • HMS Royal George
  • HMS Baionetta

My final-er-er list.

HMS Prince of Wales: the ultimate deception ploy, nobody would ever think of naming two ships the same name.
HMS Sea Lion: a little flip off to Hitler
HMS Cutlass: do I need to explain that connection
HMS Bulldog:
HMS Britannica:

OK, a few suggestions.

1. HMS Vulcan (nod to the Avro Vulcan)
2. HMS Valiant (the Vickers Valiant)
3. HMS Victor (Handley Page Victor)
4. HMS Tempest (just 'cause)
5. HMS Oberon (after the post-WW2 class of British submarines that had a very high reputation for stealth)
6. HMS Excelsior (again just 'cause)

Is it? The name of the ship is largely irrelevant in it's identification - you can change the name, but it's the silhouette that gives it away (this, largely, is the point of Q Ships. Looks like a merchant man, but isn't). There's no way a Q ship is going to be mistaken for a KGV battleship. On top of that, the Abwehr can't read British naval code so getting the names of RN ships might prove difficult.

My list for now:

HMS Camelot
HMS Avalon
HMS Pendragon (King Arthur's surname)
HMS Lady of Shalott (from the Arthurian legends and the Tennyson poem, and sounds like a rather fitting name for a "merchantman")
HMS Elaine (a recurring female name in the Arthurian legends, also in keeping with our guise as a merchantman)
"The Duke of Texas" is too formal for regular use. Just call me "Your Grace".
"If I would like to watch goodness, sanity, God and logic being fucked I would watch Japanese porn." -Nightkill the Emperor
"This thread makes me wish I was a moron so that I wouldn't have to comprehend how stupid the topic is." -The Empire of Pretantia
Head of State: HM King Louis
Head of Government: The Rt. Hon. James O'Dell MP, Prime Minister
Ambassador to the World Assembly: HE Sir John Ross "J.R." Ewing II, Bt.

Well, you do know the origin of the word Glatisant, don't you? It's another piece of Arthurian symbolism.
The thing called Glatisant is also known as the "Questing Beast" in English. Has the head of a snake, the body of a leopard, the feet of a deer, and the ass end of a lion, which I thought was fitting, given the 2112's combined abilities. Supposedly a fearsome beast that gets hunted a lot.

The possibility of Germans discovering the name is why I'm not going to vote for allusions to King Arthur. I mean, that's just saying "HEY! LOOKY HERE! EXCALIBUR SQUADRON IS PROBABLY ON THIS SHIP!"

EDIT:

Out of the 5 I suggested, I'll say my two favorites are Thunder Child and Illiad. Thunder Child, for obvious reasons, but also because it doesn't scream explicitly "EXCALIBUR SQUADRON'S YACHT", and Illiad for obvious reasons.

IIRC a few of us like War of the Worlds, so nice tie-in there.

The best trailer for a War of the Worlds film would simply be a seaman running around a ship in panic, moving through it to the deck. As he runs on deck he knocks into someone and bashes a life-ring or something from the walls, landing by the camera as he runs forward toward the mist-shrouded bow to reveal the writing on it - HMS Thunder Child. Then suddenly noise and it fades to black.

HG Wells was a pretty kick-ass author. And War of the Worlds might just be the best thing I've read by him.

Besides, what other chance do you get to throw a classic sci-fi reference into a WWII RP?
