Well, rudders weren't invented even by maritime nations. Every naval nation used oars for steering.

It depends on your definition of "rudder." If you're talking about a large plank/oar stuck through the keel at the stern, controlled by hand, then those were around back in 3000 BC. If you're talking about an attached planks (like modern rudders), those were first commonly used at the end of the Middle Ages.

Also, I'm thinking about speeding this up again. I was thinking we could do 100 years a page until 500 BC, where we'd go back to 50. Then, at 0 (or maybe a bit later), we'd go back down to 20. Thoughts?

Well, how about a slow per-day thing. 20 years a day so we speed up, until 0 when it becomes 10. We'd still get fifty-something days out of the BCE era, too.
