Well, to be honest, walking tanks probably aren't that far-fetched. As long as he's using regular tank shells.
And, like I said 1,000 times, Railguns and Coilguns can be used. Sparingly. And only in the category of fixed artillery, or mobile artillery that's very vulnerable to counter attack.

Walking tanks are a terrible, terrible idea.

If it would be 4.000 degrees, you would have a huge problem, since any rifle, cannon, gun or anything that has things that heat up to that much, will become affected. And when iron becomes hot, it melts. Therefore rendering it useless.
